I'm back quicker than I anticipated to suggest a few more artists to those interested... Amy Cooper. I don't think anybody has mentioned this SF native, but I've been stalking, I mean talking, to her for a little while now. She's got a Lucinda Williams-Sheryl Crow-Michelle Malone urban cowgirl style with perhaps a little more bite. The lady can flat out play and has this great, confident style on stage. I'm completely hooked. She recently finished up recording her new LP and will have advanced copies at her show this Wednesday 9/22 at the Hotel Cafe -- the much buzzed about Gavin Bellour and Sara Bareilles will also be playing that night. http://www.amycooper.com/ Angela Correa. Quite randomly, I received an email from a prominent UK DJ inquiring about about Ms. Correa, so I guess my little secret is starting to get out. Anybody who knows Tom Brosseau will probably be familiar with Angela since they both form the folk duo of Les Shelleys. But Angela has a unique thing going all her own. She has a thing for murder ballads. In fact, her new recordings are entitled "Murder Ballads" and for those who are obsessed with lo-fi no depression era folk like Haley Bonar, I highly suggest Angela's music. See her live, though, to get a better impression of her work. She does a spot-on version of Elizabeth Cotton's "Ain't No Lie" that will make you fall hard for her. No lie. http://www.angelacorrea.com/ The Chapin Sisters. What a surprise these girls have turned out to be. So, yeah, they're well connected (two of the girls are the daughters of Tom Chapin, the third is the daughter of Wes Craven) but who cares. Their sweet, winsome three-party harmony folk may remind you of The Be Good Tanyas or their local competition The Haden Triplets, but I think there's room for all of the above. And their cover of Britney's "Toxic" is better than Tristan Prettyman's (yes, I said it). http://www.thechapinsisters.com/ Before I go on, I should note that the reason I mention the above artists is they just so happen to be on Tom Brosseau's Tuesday residency at Tangier (Los Angeles) in October. Also scheduled to perform are Kate Earl, Trespassers William, Becky Stark, Gus, Gregory Page, Exfriends, and maybe some surprises. I can only emphasize that I highly recommend you come out to these shows if you live in the area. Tom's website will have all the info in the coming days... http://www.tombrosseau.com/ Midnight Movies + Giant Drag. I will mention these two bands at once since 1). we're all old friends 2). they've both put out recordings on Leftwing Recordings and 3). they're two of the best bands in Los Angeles. Last year, they both debuted on the scene through separate residencies at the Silverlake Lounge. To be honest, I wasn't too impressed and the three people by the bar weren't either. But things change, music develops, and now they're both adored by every glum boy and girl in Silver Lake. Midnight Movies (imagine Stereolab in your right channel, Broadcast in your left) is out and about in support of their new record out on Emperor Norton and Giant Drag (Mazzy Star vs. The Kills) is touring the UK as I type this period. Go see them. http://www.midnightmovies.net/ http://www.giantdrag.com/ Anna Nalick. I suppose I can mention her now since she's starting to make some noise around the country on her current radio promo tour. Her music is bit geared for today's hit radio stations, but darnit if she isn't one of the sweetest girls I know. She's signed to Columbia Records and has a contemporary folk/pop album along the lines of Alice Peacock, Jewel, and Shannon McNally coming out soon. Her ballads seem to show more depth to her voice and songwriting, but the talent is there regardless. She performs regularly with a band but sounds better without them. Keep your ear dialed in on AOR stations if you're looking to hear more about her. http://www.annanalick.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Sep 2004 15:16:03 -0700 From: Alan Subject: Disclaimer on new Elvis Costello album http://www.sciencefictiontwin.com/blog/2004/09/elvis-costello-on-anti-piracy.asp I found this pretty funny. I recently discovered her music and like what I hear, though I've not seen her live... but I've been promoting her gigs in the SF Bay Area on my website since Sept 12 (http://www.geocities.com/bab_news/) and she just played last night in SF, will play again Oct 21. - -- John ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #264 ***************************
