This had been one of those bands that has evolved from a series of other bands and, by the sound of the demo I've heard, evolution has worked. While I understand comparisons are always subjective, the nearest I can get is to ask you to imagine a more funked-up, danceworthy Tom Waits, refereshing and daring in this time of late 70's pastiche guitar bands. The site has a couple of downloads, though, so don't take my word for it. Go listen. Circus Gone, in particular, has a fine vocal contribution in the middle by the keyboard player, Alain Man. Enjoy. adam k. np: Lipstick Conspiracies/Thea Gilmore ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Sep 2004 07:26:30 -0700 (PDT) From: anna maria "stjärnell" Subject: tribute albums hi.. well there are tribute albums all over the shop.. does anyone on ecto have one they actually like. i'd nominate i'm your fan for leonard cohen-home of john cale's hallulejuah which inspired jeff buckley to cover it. also the rocky erickson tribute where the pyramid meets the eye is good..julian cope does a delectably bonkers track and thin white rope are terrifying on burn the flames. anna maria np-dimbodius-hands let go nr-sarah waters-tipping the velvet __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? There are several I listen to on a regular basis. One fave is the first Sweet Relief benefit album, featuring covers of Vic Williams' songs by everyone from Lucinda Williams to Evan Dando to Pearl Jam. Fabulous, and perfect for those who can't get past Vic's wacky voice. The second Sweet Relief benefit album, featuring the songs of Vice Chestnutt is good, but I don't listen to that much. Another one I find myself listening to a surprising amount is _I Wanna Be Kate_, featuring covers of Kate Bush songs. I'm particularly taken with "There Goes a Tenner," but there's some other cool stuff on there. Finally, there's _Badlands_, the all-covers remake of Bruce Springsteen's _Nebraska_. Very different from the original album -- some of the songs are performed in a much more upbeat manner, and some are depressed-down in a way they aren't on Bruce's album. jeff n.p. _Up_, Peter Gabriel ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Sep 2004 09:24:23 -0700 From: Nadyne Mielke Subject: Re: tribute albums At 07:26 AM 9/15/2004, anna maria "stjdrnell" wrote: >hi.. >well there are tribute albums all over the shop.. >does anyone on ecto have one they actually like. I really like the Grateful Dead tribute album, and listen to it regularly. Indigo Girls, Suzanne Vega, Warren Zevon, Cowboy Junkies ... what more could you want out of a tribute album? I find the bluegrass tribute to AC/DC to be amusing. It's good to have in my MP3 player when it's set to random, but I can't listen to the whole thing in one go. /nm NP: Future Soundtrack for America ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Sep 2004 11:00:27 -0700 From: Sue Trowbridge Subject: Amy X Neuburg in New Zealand Are there any New Zealanders on this list? I know there are folks in Australia, but just in case there's anyone from NZ (or anyone from Australia who feels like making the trip!), I thought I'd post these tour dates from one of my favorite performers, Amy X Neuburg. There are comments about her in the ecto guide: http://ectoguide.org/alpha/n/neuburg.amy.x - but what she's doing now is quite different than her older work. She is doing a one-woman show, armed with lots of effects that allow her to make vocal loops and "sing along" with herself. She also plays live percussion. Amy has a beautiful, classically-trained voice, and her current stuff is pretty astonishing avant-garde pop. This means that if the content provider (show producer) doesn't want you to record a digital program at 5 to watch at 7 then you won't be able to. This has been a fair-use right for us in the analog days. If you see the word "flag" in a discussion of digital TV, this is what they mean. You can go to Television Liberation Digital Front at www.eff.org/broadcastflag/ for more info. The only way around it is to make/buy your own HD recorder before then. It was noted that machines made now can be sold at any time and some people will stock up now to sell on Ebay later. Thanks, bye, KrW I'm Peter Pan! I'm perpetually young!! OW!!
