As has been said by others already, AA batteries don't hold as much "juice" per weight as custom batteries can.. This fact is often pointed out by PDA and camera makers. I have a very happy compromise ("best of both worlds") setup. I have an iRiver SlimX-350 CD-MP3 player. It has a very thin proprietary rechargeable (but removable) battery built into the main unit, but it also has an external (and also removable) 2xAA "tube" pack as well. So I have been preserving the "life" of the internal battery by using rechargeable AA's as the main source, but when I need to lighten my load or have extra battery life, the internal then becomes the "spare tank" as it were. Another thing I like about this model is that it also has an FM tuner in it. So I get a convential CD player, an MP3 player that holds 700MB per disc, and a radio all in one unit. Covers pretty much all of my bases musically. I found a cd case (kinda like a Case Logic, although it wasn't that exact brand) that had a pretty hard shell, clipped out half the sleeves in it, and it's become my portable iRiver holder. It holds the player, the external AA battery pack, about 10-15 discs, and spare batteries inside, then I clip the remote to the outside. I can feel safe dumping it straight into my backpack, the only cord I have to contend with is the headphone cord, so I have everything I need in one robust little package. The unit itself is so programmable even a geek like me was daunted by it. It has dozens of equilizer and other customization settings that I've never bothered to explore (like picking whether song info scrolls horizontally or vertically on the remote..??? Sheesh.) My only complaint is the "rocker" controls aren't the most intuitive. It has 3 of them, and even after having as long as I've had this one, I still end up mistaking them and using the wrong one now and then. The pictures of their better models indicate they use some different controls on those, so maybe they learned the lesson on those. I've mulled over an iPod (or clone) purchase a few times, but for me, I just haven't felt it necessary. My player cost about 1/3 of what an iPoc does, and given that a 700 MB CD-R disc only costs pennies these days, I have a more extensible storage than an iPod can offer, for a lot less. Yeah, it's a little larger in size, but I almost always have my backpack with me, and when it's in there, who cares what size it is :) Oh, and yeah, I can't use it like a hard drive like an iPod can, but since I have a USB "thumb" drive, *and* a PDA already, I already have that base covered. So nutshell summary: I give iRiver a thumbs up, at least for their cd models. Don't rule out a cd-based one unless size and external computer storage are really factors for you... moo. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Sep 2004 10:05:48 -0400 From: gordodo@optonline.net Subject: Re: mp3 players i also have the iRiver cd/mp3 player (i dont remember the model offhand as I left it in the hotel room this morning - lots of good that does - hard to listen to music when you forget it...) that i picked up from amazon last year i have been traveling with it alot, dropped it numerous times, and probably put it through 40 cycles in xray scanners at the airport and it still works great... the battery life is also pretty good - i usually only go through about 4 aa's using it on my hour commute every day for 2 weeks - the only thing I dont like is that if you put it on hold and forget you can end up draining the batteries because you think you have turned the unit off by pushing stop but the hold overrides it... i carry about 6 cds with me in slimline cases - about 60 albums on 4 discs and a random mix of hundreds of tracks on the other 2...and yet I still am yearning for music that I dont have with me...what can I say - i'm an addict....(and dont have enough time to rip all the tracks/albums I want and dont want to pay someone $1 a disc to do it for me...) - -jason anyone in the UK going to see Astrid Williamson on Wednesday? np nothing (damnhotelmakingmeforgetmycdplayerbecausetheshowerhadnocoldwaterandigottiredofscaldingmyselfanditwasrainingbutishouldhaverememberedthediscmananyway) - ----- Original Message ----- From: bblist@mooman.com Date: Sunday, September 12, 2004 4:22 pm Subject: Re: mp3 players > andrew fries writes: > > > - use of standard batteries (AA or some such) rather than > proprietary > > pack.
