I could say You could definitely tell she was enjoying herself. Or I could say I expected it to be good, but I didn't know it would be awesome. Or simply She even did a moonwalk. Sunday night Natalie, backed by a 4 piece band (drums, keyboard, acoustic & electric guitar, and bass) gave a high energy show. She danced around a lot during the songs and in between talked a bit about Cape Breton fiddle traditions and history, as well as her own history (she started dancing at 5 and fiddling at 9). Occasionally the band broke into smaller groups: duos, trios, even a solo piece by Natalie. At one point the band played a song by itself while Natalie replaced a popped string. Natalie also let the band members showcase their talents. The bassist, who has a cd of jazz standards, sang and led a respectable 3 piece combo version of "Autumn Leaves" which Natalie joined at the end. The guitarist sand and played a 3/4 version of "Danny Boy" with Natalie accompanying at times. Natalie also did a solo, a song written by a classically trained Scot who lived in the 1700s, or possibly early 1800s. At one point 2 young girls came on stage doing traditional step dancing. They danced for a song and came back later in the show for another dance. On her last song Natalie ran off the stage and let the band play. She returned in her socks and showed off her own step dancing skills. Then she left the stage again and returned, shoed, with her fiddle. She tap danced and played some more. They got a big standing ovation and came back for an encore which kept most of the audience on its feet, myself included. A fantastic end to a great weekend. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Is your PC infected? Get a FREE online computer virus scan from McAfee. Little Jack has updated the graphics at his site and he has a nice little reminiscence of Hubert Selby Jr. You might find his writing entertaining. http://www.littlejackmelody.com/ Little Jack is much like Happy in that he is an American treasure toiling musically in the middle of nowhere, writing great songs, performing a few times a year, and cranking out an album every four or so years. His songs are beautiful musically and lyrically. He has ceased to be a novelty act and become a pop writer who uses unusual instrumentation. Actually, the latest incarnation of his band has no odd instrumentation at all. I hope the banjo will make it onto his next album. He has fun with cover songs: Ode to Joy (in German), Backstreet Girl (Stones), Is That All There Is?, 99 Luftballoons (in German), America (Sondheim/Bernstein), a Pet Clark song I can't remember the title of, Cum on Feel the Noize, Alabama Song, etc. His band started out as a cabaret band emulating 1920's German music but it has moved beyond that to become a pop band toying with jazz styles and lounge singing. Yay. She's playing around town a lot over the next month or so: check out www.taniabowra.com for details. She's also doing a live broadcast from the Ultimo studios of Radio National this Friday (Sep 10) - check out http://www.abc.net.au/rn/music/liveos/default.htm if you want to attend, or listen to Radio National (http://www.abc.net.au/rn) at 7pm AEST. And regarding Missy Higgins - she released an EP called "Scar" last month, and her album "The Sound of White" came out a couple of days ago. I haven't heard it yet but I'm really looking forward to it. Missy's touring Oz in October too, check out www.missyhiggins.com for more information (there's a nasty unskippable Flash intro though, be warned). Yay. That reminds me, I was going to post about that but Sherlyn beat me to it! Tania Bowra is by now a veteran of the scene in Sydney and occasionally in the UK (she played in Eddi Reader's band). Tania released her first record on 1989, while "Place in the Sun" is only her third. She has this deep, mellow voice that lends itself well to laid-back yet confident style of this record. It is quite lovely! By the way, it was released on Craven Records, small indie label started by another pillar of local community, Lara Goodridge (Whippersnappers, Peccadillo, Joy & Lara, Fourplay). http://www.taniabowra.com Another new record somewhat similar in style is The Millers Tale, "Wish It Away". They have been around for a good few years as well but I only saw them once and at the time I thought they were somewhat underwhelming; perhaps they had a bad night, perhaps the noisy pub was not the best environment for their type of music, and perhaps they simply got better with time... Most likely, it's all three. Anyhow, this is a very nice record and I really would like to come up with other description, since all too often "nice" is just another word for "bland", but really I don't think it is bland... well, admitedly it doesn't have many sharp edges, but that does not automatically make it worthless! It *is* simply pleasant to listen to, I have to stand by this description. http://www.themillerstale.net For something more edgy, try "Love Outside Andromeda" ... so far I only heard snippets on the radio, but it was enough to make me want to get the album - I just haven't had the chance yet. I'm also hearing good things about theredsunband (yes, one word). They just released what I think is their first album, 'peapod'. They have a site at www.theredsunband.com, but unfortunately it is one of these yucky Flash-only sites. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #250 ***************************
