I seem to remember that she even came to Florida on that tour and I really wanted to go see her, but wasn't able to. I don't have the CD yet, so I just went and ordered it. I see that there is a DVD too, and wonder if it's worth getting the DVD too. Speaking of Joan live, Joan was one of the first concerts I ever went to back in the 70's. It was at one of those old theaters in Chicago. It was amazing for me to see this great musician and songwriter up there on the stage and she looked more nervous than I was. As an awkward teen that was (and still is) painfully shy, it was encouraging in some way to see someone who appeared to be much like me get up in front of thousands of people and perform. More recently I've revisited that time in my life and spent many days listening to all the old Joan albums remembering those "good" old days way back when. I think of Joan more as a pop-rocker--ala Melissa Etheridge (though she's definitely capable of folkier material), where Carrie I would compare more to Nanci Griffith. I would never have thought to compare the two as I think of them quite differently--Joan is more political, a bit more pop, Carrie a bit quieter, folkier. However, there is a slight resemblance in their voices at times. Halfway through track 1 I said, "Kate who?" Bjork has been one of my personal musical goddesses for a while now. I need to spend much quality time with this one in a dark, quiet room with good headphones on. I can tell this record will reveal much coolness that way for a very long time to come. I also think this is kinda eerie: remember when Happy was recording _Many Worlds Are Born Tonight_, and she was performing the title track and her intention was to record it with no instruments, just vocals? She ended up not doing that, but remember the working title of the song at the time was "Jork". =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 01 Sep 2004 11:05:11 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Joanna Newsom Hi, adam wondered: >I know someone probably mentioned her, and I know I probably wasn't paying >attention, but does anyone know about her? However, I just can't get past her childlike voice. She sounds like she's six years old, and I just want to stab myself in the head whenever I hear her sing. This distresses me, because I really *want* to like her as much as everyone else, but I just can't. (I've never been able to deal with those really fragile childlike voices anyway -- Stina, for example, is another I can't handle.) YMMV, of course. If you like Stina and that ilk, you'll probably like Joanna Newsom. Plus she plays the harp, and you have to give her points for that. P.S. I heard somewhere that her brother is current San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom. Not sure if that's true or not, but it'd be cool if it were! =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Sep 2004 17:44:28 +0200 From: Yves Denneulin Subject: Re: Do you AudioScrobbler? > In January, I joined a website called AudioScrobbler. Mind you, it is very long. _Blueberry Boat_ is all about complicated song structures, so it's not something you can "get" on the first couple of listens. I've been listening to it since it first was released and it has been growing on me incrementally. Personally, I think it's brilliant. That said, I would recommend _Gallowbird's Bark_ as a starting place - -- the songs there are immediately catchy. As for what they sounds like, well, I don't like White Stripes (or Radiohead, really, though I do kind of like their most recent one--but with the song structures in _Blueberry Boat_ I can see where you're coming from with the comparison) so to me Fiery Furnaces just sounds like Fiery Furnaces. I think she's aiming for 'delightfully whimsical' but for me it hits somewhere closer to 'plastic foam dragged across a glass pane'... you know, that sound that makes you want to run out of the room screaming. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 01 Sep 2004 18:22:06 -0700 From: raven@igc.org Subject: Re[2]: Joanna Newsom At 08:05 AM 09/01/2004, meredith wrote: >adam wondered: > >>I know someone probably mentioned her, and I know I probably >>wasn't paying attention, but does anyone know about her? >>There's an article by David Eggers in today's Guardian >>extolling her virtues. > >woj really really likes her a lot, as do many people whose >musical tastes I respect. However, I just can't get past >her childlike voice. I understand your disliking her voice, I also have trouble with some voices... she is doing two shows in my area now, the first is Center For The Arts in Grass Valley 03 Sept, the second is Berkeley Community Theater (love that venue) on 15 Sept, with Neil Young & Jonathan Richman, that should be a great show! I am currently fascinated by Christine Pureka (Northampton), she's playing San Francisco 03 Sept, and Santa Cruz 07 Sept, details at http://www.geocities.com/bab_news/babcoming.html - -- John ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #244 ***************************
