In fact I've only met ONE CD that I could not get around. The whole thing pisses me off, but as long as I can get around it, it's not that big of a deal to me. It's when they perfect the process I will stop buying CDs and start writing real letters. >n.r.: THE CONFUSION by Neal Stephenson How is that? Frankly, while I might get myself to buy a copy-protected CD by someone I was already a big fan of (say, for instance, a new KaTe Bush CD), for a new artist it pretty much just guarantees me not buying the album. It didn't take me nearly as long as _Quicksilver_, but these are still very dense books, and as a normally very fast reader, it's surprising to come up against something that takes me months to get through. Along with the upcoming _System of the World_, due out on the first of October, _Quicksilver_ and the _The Confusion_ basically comprise a massive story over something like 2,500 pages and spanning at least 65 years. Set primarily in the second half of the 17th century, these books, while featuring Stephenson's trademark cyberpunk sensibilities, take place far too early to even be considered steampunk. The first book concentrates on the scientific, political, financial, and religious revolutions of the time. The second book is more swashbuckling than the first and concentrates more on the financial and political aspects, particularly of the war between France and England. The third, from the way #2 ends, will likely concentrate on the Whig Junto, and the English Mint as run by Isaac Newton. So I'm sitting at home, a little bored, watching Season 2 of Angel and this message arrives. I think, hey cool! I was there in the 60's, just hung up my homemade "No Shrubs" poster on my locker at work Friday. And hey, I recently got cable. So let's check this out. I get out my cable guide, channel 23 looks like C-Span, and pause the DVD. On screen there is a black congregation hallelujahing a preacher ranting against gay marriage. So I'm thinking that as far as protests go this is a bit esoteric, but hey people in NYC are more sophisticated than us folks out here in Tacoma, WA. So I go back to Angel, finish watching the episode and decide to check out the protest. It's the top of the hour and the advertisement on screen is for TBN.....TBN....oops the guide actually says C-Span is channel 24. That looks more like it. Good sized crowd! Maybe Monday I'll get my eyes checked.
