Its possible I'm more out of tune with pop culture than I believe myself to be (which is certainly a possibility.) don't worry..pop culture sucks anyhow. (mostly) well they are good but all the hype put me off listening. when my ears opened i loved them. dito the equally hyped franz ferdinand. dark of the matinee is a good contender for pop song of the summer for me. the swedish singer jens lekman rocks..his album when i said i wanted to be your dog is fabulous. smart lyrics(as far as i can tell his english is great). and effective arrangements. he has some eps out in the states. worth a listen. anna maria __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? It works, mostly, because the songs are more substantial than Guthrie's 'soundscape' aesthetic in the Cocteau Twins. As a singer, de Mare's voice is a little too light and frothy to completely pull off her tales of bruised, mascara-masked vixens, but its pleasant enough. At its best, "Russian Doll" evokes a film noir city, where crimes of passion are common. - --Craig Tired of spam? Yahoo! When I was a kid, there was a puppet duo on kid's tv called Pinky & Perky -- two anthropomorphic pigs. Their voices were speeded up actor's voices, and they'd sing songs, including the Beatles. Yes, I do have an EP, somewhere, of their Beatle's covers, including "She Loves Me". So, when most people have heard a hilariously camp post-modern deconstruction of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb (or so you'd think, to hear the critics) I hear a crap novelty record that could be done by two puppet pigs. I've been heavily reproached by my son and his girlfriend for this attitude ("If it's too camp, you're too old" kinda thing) so, maybe I should lighten up a bit. Not yet, though. adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Aug 2004 11:54:42 -0700 (PDT) From: Ellen Rawson Subject: Re: Great Pop Album - The Scissor Sisters - --- jjhanson@att.net wrote: > I'm not sure how long its been released here in the > U.S.--it > certainly hasn't created the buzz and the #1 hits > here that > its had in England. Its possible I'm more out of > tune with pop culture > than I believe myself to be (which is certainly a > possibility.) I am very out of touch with pop culture; my students will testify to that. The only reason I know they have hits here is because they're played a lot on the radio. When I'm driving, if I want music (I don't have a CD player in the car, and most of my tape mixes are old and dying -- I need to make more), my choices tend to be between classical or stations that play a lot of chart music. When we've gone away for the weekend on a road trip, my husband and I sometimes will listen to whatever localised version of the chart show is on Sunday afternoon (as we're driving home) and count how many of the songs we actually can tolerate. ;) Ellen, feeling her age and listening to WXPN online. ;) ===== "Literature stops in 1100. I like Kate, and I like the 95th percentile of emo and above, and the one positive thing of which listening to this has convinced me is that, hmm, the two just *might* be made for each other. These guys, unfortunately, are no higher than the 50th percentile of emo. I say we force Jawbreaker to get back together and give it a shot. FYI she released a live album of the last tour last july. I don't have it, yet, it's a US only release and shipping takes time, but it has received good reviews. I saw two concerts of the last tour and she was absolutely fantastic so if the recording is good it will be a must-have for any Maria fan.
