Don't do that too often, but I was very curious. :) Yes, it's apparently copy-protected (fuck you, RCA), but my Mac didn't seem to notice and it imported into iTunes just fine. So far, I like it. It isn't grabbing me emotionally the same way the dark and dissonant six-track demo did when Dan first mentioned Charlotte two years ago. I'm also a huge fan of _Test-Drive Songs_. The beginning of "Something Like a Hero" is closest to the "old" Charlotte. I'm liking "Every Time it Rains" a lot as well. I haven't given this a super in-depth listen, so I can't provide any more commentary right now. If you get the chance to see Charlotte live, do. I caught her as part of the Find Your Balance festival in SF two weeks ago -- after not seeing her for a year -- and it only took about 30 seconds before I remembered how damned good she is. I was able to stick the CD in my PC and burn a copy to a CDR disk to play in the car. Windows Media came up with a warning but I just clicked OK and it was fine. (I usually burn copies of CDs for the car, as we have a very active 4 yr old and I don't want my CDs trashed by spilt juice. By the way, our 4 yr old has taken a very vocal liking to my old 80's albums. It's somewhat disconcerting to hear him singing along word for word to Poision Arrow, or Tainted Love, or Everybody Wants to Rule the World, but that's another thread.) On another note, I already knew about Aimee Mann. I still have all three of the Til Tuesday albums (of which Everything's Different Now is simply wonderful.) And I got Whatever. But in the 90s I simply dropped out of the whole alternative music scene and went on a decade long binge on Celtic music. When Aimee's Lost in Space came out, I got it and went ho-hum. Then I put it back in the player this year and just LOVED it. Which prompted me to get her other 90's albums. Same goes for Tori, except here two other things were at work: (1) I kept hearing she was the next Kate and as Kate remains my personal music Goddess I didn't like all that hype, and (2) I had (HAD, no longer Have) a copy of Y Can't Tori Read (free from the college radio station I worked at) and I found it very tedious. So it wasn't until July that I was looking for something new to listen to and decided to try Tori. I still like Kate and Happy Rhodes better, but Scarlet's Walk is about as perfect an album as you can get; the kind of stuff Kate could be doing now as she mellows out. One other thing: Thinking about Aimee Mann made me realize how nice it can be to follow an artist though his/her career. In her case it's great to see how she started out with rather vanilla pop like Voices Carry and somehow turn into this mature songwriter. I was too young to see Kate progress, and got into Happy and Tori too late. The only other one I can think of is Maria McKee, as I have bought every album of hers from the first Lone Justice to the latest High Dive. And for her, it has been a route full of detours, but anyone who can create Life Is Sweet and High Dive has to be recognized as having great talent. At times its a bit 80's, a bit glam, a bit Elton John, but always its a lot of fun. The songs are quite varied and members of the band take turns on vocals (one one is female) but they are a lot of fun. They do a cover of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb that owes more to The Bee Gees and Frankie Goes to Hollywood than Pink Floyd. Definitely recommend this one. Um, but that only works if you *tell* RCA that you like the artist and that you'd buy the album _if_ it didn't have crappy (and apparently useless) DRM. If you simply avoid the album, then they just figure that Charlotte doesn't have a market and they screw her over as the majors have done to oh-so-many other artists. Dear Sherry, Thank you for posting that JP Folks list. Last year I won something - I think it was in the singer/songwriter album category, but there are SO many categories I don't remember! I meant to check out the list this year and forgot. After looking at this year's list I noticed that a song I co-wrote for my upcoming album, "Desert I Call My Heart" is nominated for best pop-song except that only my co-writer's name appears as writer and artist! I didn't even know the song was submitted! Noel Cohen is a great writer and guitarist, but he can't sing... : ) Thanks to you I caught that mistake and they have fixed it. Much obliged. I highly recommend Ina May Wool's album. "Crack It Open" is in my cd player. She is such a fine all-around artist. Everyone knows that Rachael Sage is a sure thing! She has another brand new album out that I love. Jennifer Marks's new album is one of my favorite pop-singer/songwriters (I co-wrote a few songs with her on her new album : ) She is currently on tour opening for Cyndi Lauper!!! Yay, Jenn. Definitely worth checking out. Thanks again. She is looking for cool venues besides houses (although a house concert or two would be good also, any names or emails will be appreciated), sort of cool arty spaces, coffee houses on the larger side, and possibly a theatre or gallery situation that has either white walls or a video/dvd projector, as she is hoping to also show Kadath along with my performance. Anyone Ecto up there have any great ideas? A favorite coffee shop, a cool gallery? I probably will be very stripped down, if you are worried about size and full "Blind". I am performing solo a lot, or with the didg, or with didg and violin, other than maybe max 3 folks total including me, it could just be me on keys/harmonium/looper. If you simply avoid the album, > then they just figure that Charlotte doesn't have a market OK then, you can write to them if it makes you feel better :) As long as you don't buy the record! Personally I think writing is not that important because emails are probably just dealt with by their PR departments, and anyway they are not in the business of being loved - they are in the business of making money, and the only thing the people making decisions see (or are interested in) are the sales figures. If we consistently refuse to buy copy-protected CDs, the trend will appear, and they will notice. What could be of some benefit however, is writing to the artists, and telling them: look, I like your music, but I will not buy it if it's copy protected! And one positive thing I see in this situation is that luckily we are in position where we can really be heard on this level. I mean, if Britney Spears receives even a couple of hundred protes emails they would probably just disappear in the general noise, and anyhow, she has bigger fish to fry. But if Charlotte Martin got a couple of hundred of such emails I reckon she'd notice! I think we need to make this message clear to those artists who might still listen: you *are* responsible for the contracts you sign, and if you become a part of the Bad Guys ripping us off, trampling on our rights... well, you're no longer one of the Good Guys - it is as simple as that. And those of you who say, "well, I use a Mac (or Linux) and I can easily bypass copy protection"... don't be too complacent. You might bypass this one - but the next version might not be so easy. It was only our complacency that got us into this mess in the first place! Now we're finding out that the eternal vigilliance is the price of not only freedom, but of consumer rights as well. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Aug 2004 20:02:16 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: charlotte martin Hi, >What could be of some benefit however, is writing to the artists, and >telling them: look, I like your music, but I will not buy it if it's copy >protected!
