I never really got into Charlotte Martin's Test Drive Songs. I liked some of it, but never listened to it much. Still, I was intrigued enough to pre-order her new album, On Your Shore, released today. I'm a sucker for a bargain, and $13.99 for the new disc and the 4 song ep In Parenthese sounded like a good deal. Plus I figured if I didn't like the album that much I could chalk the money up to artist support. Well the discs arrived yesterday, 1 day before release even though I only chose standard shipping and was told they'd arrive 7 to 10 days after the release date. So I was very happily surprised. And more so when I popped in In Parentheses and liked it quite a bit. I played On Your Shore today, and it's even better. The sound is sharper, more beautiful and fierce (as the first reviewer said), than her debut. I don't hear Tori that much in it, in certain places in her piano phrasing or voice, like the chorus of the first track. That's a good thing though. Not because I don't like Tori (I adore her) but because I like people to sound individual. Anyway, that's not much of a review, but I only had one listen and will write something more thorough later. Anyone interested should check out the single "Every Time It Rains," available on her website www.charlottemartin.com as an mp3. I think if you like that song, you'll like the album. Any opinions? What did people think of Bjork at the Olympics? I was surprised she was there and wonder why they chose her instead of a Greek singer. I didn't really care for her song, but then after a while I realized I couldn't even hear it very well, so it wasn't a fair judgment. I liked the whole thing with the dress unfolding into a world map that covered the athletes though. Very cool. Of course Bob and Katie brought up the Oscars swan dress. Bjork's new album Medulla is out on the 31st. The review on Amazon.com sounds really intriguing, an all vocal album. "Medulla, Bjork's first new studio album in three years, finds her delving deeper than ever before into her haunting and exhilarating sound and vision. Innovative as always, Bjork has this time built the songs on Medulla entirely from vocal tracks, with no instruments appearing on the album, creating a soundscape unlike anything you've ever heard before. Special guests include Rahzel from The Roots, Mike Patton of Faith No More and Mr. Bungle, an Inuit throat singer, an Icelandic choir, the world's greatest human beatboxes and more." Now if I could just figure out when the new releases by Holly McNarland, Lori Amey, Katell Keineg, and Mila Drumke are coming out. Anyone have any news on any of those? Just not remotely what I'm in to (and I'm in to alot). None the less, I'm overjoyed they didn't have that way-more-popular-than-he-deserves/Vangelis-wannabe Yanni as part of the opening (and I'm 15/16th Greek). I was pretty much resigned to the fact they would have him there and was way glad they didn't. So Bjork was a more than fair trade-off for me. I agree on the dress thing. Pretty cool. To me the most interesting part of the opening, other than the fact they had all that water center-stage, was the "history of Greece" strolling by. Very well done and VERY colorful, especially on the huge plasma screen I was watching it on. The Greek restaurant owners around had a huge party at this estate and four 42" and one 50" plasma screens set up. TONS of food & bevs and at the end they gave away all five sets in a drawing (no one knew in advance, they surprised us with the give-away). Drooling more buckets than I ever have in my life (during the drawings), I didn't win one :-( Souvlaki'd and baklava'd-out for a while, Mike (aka Emanauouil Panagiotes Kanelakos, aka Michael Peter Connell) N.P. - my Vangelis collection ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Aug 2004 12:22:55 -0700 From: "London, Sherry" Subject: CORDERO Is anyone familiar with the group :Cordero????? I just got their last two releases and I am finding myself spell bound. I have only really listened to "Lamb lost in the city" and I am loving Ani Cordero's voice and that touch of Latin flavor spices things up. Next up will be their latest CD "Somos Cordero".... On both CDs half of the songs are English and half in Spanish. Are any of you familiar with their music? sherry ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Aug 2004 12:45:05 -0700 (PDT) From: Ellen Rawson Subject: Re: other new releases; bjork at the olympics - --- Mike Connell wrote: So Bjork was a more > than fair trade-off for me. > > I agree on the dress thing. I only heard today that NBC in the US censored the men who appeared as sculptures -- only showed them from the waist up. No exposed male private parts -- even if part of a costume -- on American TV, I guess. :( (We watched here in England.) We were more saddened by all of the teams that seemed to be dressed as the cabin crew for their national airline. I feel compelled to mention that it is a copy-protected disc. I thought last night's opening ceremony was one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. It didn't try to go over the top and get tacky. There was a lot I liked, but the moving history I agree was the best part. The human sculptures were mesmerizing; I actually got a bit confused the first couple times I saw people blink because it was so realistic. Hadn't heard anything about censorship. I can't even be disappointed because I'm so not surprised. I can't wait to see how they lit the torch. I was falling asleep, just because it was past my bedtime, so I let that part record. As if I didn't have enough Olympics coverage to watch and new music to listen to, I bought 4 new discs today: Mary Lou Lord - Baby Blue Lisa Loeb - The Way It REally Is Laura Nyro - Spread Your Wings and Fly: Live at the Fillmore East, May 30, 1971 and Lamb - Best Kept Secrets, The Best of Lamb 1996-2004 (with bonus DVD!) Anyone watching the non-HD broadcast on NBC here in the States got to see Bjork singing something, but all we heard was Bob Costas and Katie Couric making snide comments *throughout the entire song*. (And they wonder why Olympics ratings have been going steadily downward every year. The coverage of the actual events is usually worse.) Fortunately the song she did is on the album, so we'll get to hear what it sounded like soon enough. >I only heard today that NBC in the US censored the men >who appeared as sculptures -- only showed them from >the waist up. No exposed male private parts -- even >if part of a costume -- on American TV, I guess. :( Nope, of course not -- not with the Victorian FCC we're stuck with nowadays. It was absolutely asinine. >We were more saddened by all of the teams that seemed >to be dressed as the cabin crew for their national >airline. Did you notice how many dress team uniforms >made the athletes look like flight attendants? :) Hah!! I didn't think of it that way at the time, but you're so right. I was just happy to see Dawn Staley carrying in the U.S. flag. The women's basketball tournament is really the only thing I'm planning on watching closely this Olympics, and Staley, captain of the US team (the REAL "dream team", btw) is a class act in her last Games. It was great to see any member of the women's b-ball team selected to carry the flag, but particularly cool to see Staley get the honor. She definitely deserved it. Overall I really enjoyed the Opening Ceremonies ... but what's up with the big flaming pencil?! =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Aug 2004 9:06:51 +0000 From: Subject: Re: New Charlotte Martin and other notes I thought it might be worth noting that people have been reporting that the Charlotte Martin record is only $7.99 at Tower Records stores for people who aren't sure if they really want to buy it. :) For what it's worth (I'm biased!) I think it's an excellent album, there's a lot more production on it than any of her previous stuff, and the versions are very different to the live versions on archive.org (Up All Night has gone from a slow, sad one to an up-tempo pop song almost!) but there are also beautiful and simple tracks, of which my particular favourite is "Parade On". Also - Aimee and Tori - what took you so long? ;) I can understand people finding Boys For Pele obtuse, I found it that way for a long while. I never felt that way about Choirgirl, but I got to know the songs over multiple live shows, which may have had an effect.
