So basically, my recollection is exactly the same. Sweet Honey in the Rock. More specifically, that low grumbly female bass part just kept playing over and over in my head. So, I dug out all my SHITR (What an unfortunate anagram) CDs and found nothing. But, the process jarred loose a recollection and I have your answer, I think. I believe, though I cannot be sure, that the version you are thinking of is performed by the Mint Juleps. The version I am very familiar with hearing is on the Spike Lee film/doc "Do It Acappella". I pulled it out to verify and, sure enough, there it was. It's nice what memory does, because the version isn't as good as Sweet Honey WOULD sound, had they done it, but it's pleasing all the same. Then again, this may be an entirely different all-woman, R&B Acappella version, but I'm willing to bet my toenails that it's the one you're looking for. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Aug 2004 03:26:16 -0700 From: birdie Subject: Re: Name that performer If anyone runs into SHITR, say "Grrrls! You gotta do this one!" Nice toenails! Birdie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Aug 2004 04:47:44 -0700 From: Ethan Straffin Subject: Mesh, anyone? Well, I've thought about it for a while, and it would seem that I've somehow managed to wind up with a new favorite band. This doesn't happen often, and when it does, I feel obligated to mark the occasion with, at the very least, a post such as this one. It's debatable whether this U.K. trio are officially ecto, on account of them being 100% male and rather solidly in the dark-synthpop/EBM/industrial camp. Still, I tend to think that there's a reasonably direct route from, say, "Off from Out from Under Me" to "I Can't Imagine How It Hurts," and that s/he who likes one may very well like the other. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. The litmus test may be this: if you hate Depeche Mode, you'll probably hate these guys as well. On the other hand, if you like Depeche Mode...well, my brother or sister, you ain't heard nothing yet. I'll shut up now and simply submit this batch of their recent album tracks (and B-sides that might just as well have been album tracks) for consideration. http://highwire.stanford.edu/~straffin/LeaveYouNothing.mp3 http://highwire.stanford.edu/~straffin/ICantImagineHowItHurts.mp3 http://highwire.stanford.edu/~straffin/FriendsLikeThese.mp3 http://highwire.stanford.edu/~straffin/FourWalls.mp3 http://highwire.stanford.edu/~straffin/LetThemCrushUs.mp3 http://highwire.stanford.edu/~straffin/FromThisHeight.mp3 Ethan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Aug 2004 17:44:30 -0000 From: "neal copperman" Subject: Re: Name that performer Wow, nice work! Asidie from that, it doesn't even work on my normal computer set-up [Mac OS 9.2, latest version of IE]. I was surprised to find that the AMG help page actually says that it doesn't work on that configuration.) That sounds like it must be what my sister has. I wonder if, given that, she can figure out where the tape came from? It may be that the information you were looking for was spread out over separate pages now. It took me a long time to discover that the page that comes up by default is an abreviated bio that usually needs to be expanded to get anywhere. And the discography is on a separate tab. > Amazon.com search engine might be a better place for now! Anyway, it does seem awkward and slow, but still more informative then Amazon! Entering "Your Love Has Lifted Me Higher" into the Amazon search engine didn't get any matches. It said the closest alternatives were Megadeath, William Shatner and Celine Dion! :) neal ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Aug 2004 12:07:42 -0700 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: Name that performer On Tue, 2004-08-10 at 10:44, neal copperman wrote: > Wow, nice work! We had all become quite used to it (once I stumbled across the fact that our intranet had a hidden link of it at all), until the upgrade. It now requires, on Windows systems, IE 5.5, and we're stuck at 5.0. And it's near impossible to get corporate to change anything technical level, since the giant brains in the fortress of solitude don't seem to get the idea that there are these "customer" people out there and that it would be good to help them. Fortunately, the people who actually work at the store are fanatical about helping customers, so it almost evens out... but I'd love to find a giant remote cluestick with which to thwack the high-level geeks and get things working again. *sigh* ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Aug 2004 11:02:54 -0700 From: birdie Subject: Re: Name that search engine Heh... I was able to name everything but one stupid stupid track. So what do I do, but call woj. Here listen to this. Guess what - no search results. damn. guess either we'll have to wait until woj version 3.0 comes out or i stop buying such eclectic random wonderful stuff that i cannot remember the artists... - -jason btw, the track was Myself by Kim Taylor- highly worth checking out on cdbaby if you havent heard of it (or cannot remember who she is :) ) np Kim Taylor - So Black, So Bright - ----- Original Message ----- From: birdie Date: Tuesday, August 10, 2004 2:02 pm Subject: Re: Name that search engine > Heh... > > I went to the AMG site after I posted the link... > > Last time, I registered, and set it up fro automatic log-in. > > Well...it seems to want me to re-submit the log-in data on every > new page > > HA! > > What's the point? > > So, I think, I'll just leave that site alone until they get the > bugs > worked out. > > Plus, I looked up performers I know, and a sliver of the data is > now up > that used to be, so, it doesn't look like they transfered > everything > and/or the server (s) are loaded up, yet. > > Amazon.com search engine might be a better place for now! > > Any others more functional? > > AMG was amazing but... > > Cheers > > Birdie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Aug 2004 12:26:43 -0700 From: "phclark" Subject: Re: Name that search engine I used to use AMG all the time.
