Last year I researched the ISC Song Contest and thought, "what the hell, why not?" so, because I had some extra money at the time, I paid for Happy to enter 3 songs into the contest. She didn't win (or you'd have heard about it, of course), but she was listed as one of the many "Runners up" on their web page. In things like this, in all things Happy, I have a philosophy of "you never know" which is why I optimistically give away Happy CDs and have for years. That's why I wanted her to enter, but not for the reason that might first spring to mind. We all know that the time for Happy to "break out" has long since passed. If she was going to do it, it would have happened several years ago. I didn't enter her into the contest hoping for anything as radical as "being discovered." My hope was that someone along the way would hear her and want to use her voice on their records, backup or duet, maybe generate a little extra cash for her. It's a modest but worthy goal, and that's where my "you never know" comes from. Here's their web site: http://www.songwritingcompetition.com/ If you look at the judges page, you'll see that some of the names are worth trying to get Happy's music to. They're not nobodies. If you look at the Winners page, and Search for "Happy" you'll find her buried under a ton of other names. If at first you don't succeed...well, I think she should keep trying for as long as possible. This was completely my idea, but with Happy's permission (and probably embarrassment) I want to ask if anyone wants to contribute to this year's contest. You don't have to answer in Ecto or write me personally. If you have a PayPal account, you can just send money to her directly at CptBryant@aol.com , with "ISC Song Contest" in the Subject Line. How much? That's up to you. The entry fee is $30.00 for the first song and, before August 31, $20.00 for every song after. Entrants can enter as many songs as they like. I only had the money for one song this year, so that takes care of the first song. You wouldn't have to contribute enough for a whole song. If enough people contribute a little bit, it can add up to maybe several more songs. You never know! We're About 9 -- Engine (highly recommended, especially if you > like Richard Shindell) I saw We're About 9 at Folk Alliance and found them pretty uninspiring. However, I spent some time listening to the CD and it was one of those quiet CD's that really snuck up on me. To me, it doesn't sound so much like Richard Shindell as sounding like people who sound like Richard Shindell. (Did that make sense? Richard Shindell twice removed.) It reminded me of people who reminded me of Richard Shindell. (There, was that better?) But the funny thing is that, people who remind me of Richard Shindell immediately suffer by comparison. Their songwriting rarely rises to his level and I just want to listen to RS. But these guys, the connection seemed far enough removed that I never made it. So it was easier to judge them on their own merits. They are a trio of two men and a women. They all sing. They all write songs. They do a lot of harmonies. I think when I saw them, I wasn't prepared for something so understated and it blew right by me. After listening to the CD a lot, I'd like to see them again (and in a better environment then FA). I was put more in mind of Ida and that sort of quietness then Cry, Cry, Cry or the Wailin' Jennys, which is what I thought I might be getting. They are definitely very smart songwriters though, and they like clever wordplay. It's evident right off the bat, when their web page re-directs you from We're About 9 to Circa 9 :) Three full songs for your sampling pleasure on their web page. neal ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Aug 2004 21:01:23 -0400 (EDT) From: Sue Trowbridge Subject: Emily Bezar News!!! How long has it been since anyone has said those words? :) After a couple years in France, Emily & her family moved back to the U.S. a few months ago, and she is now putting the finishing touches on her new album. YAY! The CD will be called ANGELS' ABACUS and the tentative release date is Sept. 14. Emily will be releasing it on her own DemiVox label (I offered to put it out, but somehow she managed not to be tempted by the music business juggernaut that is 125 Records) and it should be available via her web site - http://www.emilybezar.com/ and, I'm presuming, the usual online outlets (I've been telling her CDBaby is perfect for her, so I'm hoping it will be for sale there). Not sure if she will be doing any live shows but I fervently hope so. A couple notes for people in the San Francisco area: There is a weird-but-intriguing-sounding benefit this Sunday at Pena Pachamama in North Beach for Thrillpeddlers, a local theater group that will be producing an evening of Grand Guignol plays this fall. Two of my favorite people, songstress Jill Tracy and author Eddie Muller, will be performing/holding court, respectively. For details please visit http://www.hypnodrome.com/ Also, on Aug. 19 at the Hemlock Tavern, a couple of bands from my label are going to be performing. One of them (Statuesque) is actually coming all the way from England for the occasion. It seems like everyone in town except myself & the musicians will be on vacation then.... so if you'll be in the city, stop on by! There's more info at http://www.125records.com/ . Not quite ecto music, but it is pleasant guitar pop. There are MP3s galore on the site. - --Sue np: Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, HEARTS OF OAK ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 05 Aug 2004 21:18:01 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Emily Bezar News!!! I'm going to be trying out a new project this Sunday, which may be closer to Ecto than what I'd been doing in recent years. Working with an amazing pianist, Katherine Setar, I've been developing somewhat unusual versions of folk songs. We'll be premiering a brief set of these songs at a free all-day event, the fourth Annual Transbay Skronkathon BBQ, at the Jazz House (formerly Tuva Space), about a block from the Ashby BART in Berkeley (California, USA, Earth, blah blah blah). We're scheduled to go on at about 6 PM, in the midst of a day of intriguing music and sumptuous barbequing (BYOBBQ, but the grill will be up and running all day). I'm really excited about this project, and hope to continue with it into something larger. But we'll see how this goes.
