Finally I got to see Anne Heaton live. After several missed chances here in L.A., the stars aligned, and there I was at Genghis Cohen, listening to Anne and Frank play a wonderful hour-long set of music from her latest album, Give In, as well as a few from Black Notebook. I am so forlorn now that I did not see her before. Fantabulous! I love her voice, so warm with such a supple vibrato...it's right up there with Eddi Reader as far as voices that make me melt in my shoes. ***** Sarah Slean's month long residency here in L.A. wrapped up last night. She'll be doing a couple shows next week opening for Rasputina in Anaheim, and then I think it's back to Toronto. It was fun while it lasted. The new album Day One keeps popping back into my CD player...it may very well be the number one album for 2004 for me. I've seen her a few times in New York, but last Saturday I saw her in Seattle with Tamar, the longest set I've seen her and Frank do yet. I counted 8 songs from _Give In_, 6 from _Black Notebook_, and 2 new ones. Quite a lot! She sounds stronger, more aggressive in a way, every time I see her, and I think Frank's playing really adds to that. The new album is wonderful, though not quite up there with Black Notebook in my opinion, and the songs were even better live. I also did my first request, asking for "Old Man By 21." It was a wonderful rendition, the second to last song she played. I can't quite remember how it differed from the album version, but it was something I noticed at the time, something about the vocals at the ending. Lanterna followed, also very good, but quite different from Anne, or perhaps totally opposite. Where Anne was very giddy and social in her crowd banter, Lanterna had none and was completely introspective. In some ways it felt like I was spying on him, watching this guy play in his bedroom. But the music was very good, like listening to The Moon Seven Times without vocals. I just found out about Happy Rhodes and I gotta tell ya I'm really really really impressed. I was looking for Kate Bush b-sides and got "When The Rain Came Down" - supposedly Annie Lennox and Kate Bush... so I asked on a Kate forum when did Kate record that and what a surprise when I was told that was not Kate... so, I got another Happy Rhodes song online and loved it a lot too. I have since tried finding her records here in Brazil to what I haven't had any luck yet but I still gotta visit the one decent cd store we got here, so there is still hope. Glad you finally got to see her live, I first saw her 18 Mar 2002, and I have seen her about five times through the years, I really wish I could see her do a headlining set, but I've only seen her open for Melissa Ferrick... not that I'm complaining, they are best of friends so she often tours with Melissa, and someday I'll see her do a headlining gig. I'm actually (as you read this) transcribing every show I have recorded of her to CD, to mail her copies of each show. - -- John ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Jul 2004 23:55:51 EDT From: SpiritWe@aol.com Subject: **RACHAEL SAGE CD NYC RELEASE / AUGUST TOURDATES** **GREETINGS VOLUMINOUS VIXENS!** Below you'll find an updated BALLADS & BURLESQUE tour schedule for next month, & a few other RACHAEL SAGE ruminations.
