Subject: Origa Has anyone heard of the Russian singer Origa? I just heard the title song to Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex called "Inner Universe," and it blew me away. The only way I could describe it to my husband was that the song just swelled inside you and lifted you away. It was written by Yoko Kanno and has techno music and heavenly vocals. I keep listening to it at work when I get a chance. I noticed Origa had a few cds on Amazon.com, but they're imports, so there's no samples. I wasn't sure if the musical style was more Origa's or the composer's. Anybody know? Thanks. I wasn't sure if the musical style was more >Origa's or the composer's. Anybody know? > > Given her reputation, it's probable what you heard from _GITS/SAC_ was pure Kanno. For the record, Yoko Kanno is a _big_ name and a cult fave among _otaku_ (anime/manga/Japanese pop culture) fans. As a composer, she's built up quite a resumi, including - but not limited to... _Macross Plus_ (OAV and movie editions) _Memories_ ("Magnetic Rose" section) _The Vision of Escaflowne_ (most but not all of the music for the TV series and movie) _Cowboy Bebop_ (both the TV series and "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" movie) _Brain Powered_ (TV anime series) _Wolf's Rain_ ...and so on. In other words, she's considered a class act in anime fandom. And that's just scratching the surface. She also produces seiyuu/singer-songwriter Maaya Sakamoto (whose initial success came from voicing the role of Hitomi in the _Escaflowne_ series; she would encore the role in the movie) for JVC-Victor; _Shonen Alice_ is her latest album. (There are no plans to release them here, however.) As for Origa, this sounds like the first time she has worked with Kanno-sensei. (Another better-known collaborator was Gabrielle Rodin.) - --- Just so everyone knows: Unfortunately, I've had to unload most of my Japanese CDs at the Book-Off store in Manhattan for financial reasons. (I'm holding on to two 3-inch CD singles of Ms. Sakamoto, though, as well as some discs bought at sell-out prices.) As of right now, the only J-musicians I'm officially supporting are Mari Iijima (whose _Gems_ collection came out a few weeks ago) and the indie/DIY band Strawberry Record. Other than those, everything else is either budget generic traditional stuff (via J-List/J-Box when they get it) or downloaded from legit sites. $28 for an album-length CD, I've come to understand, is extortion. End of that story. Besides, I want to _make_ some Japanese audio (music and story) for the Internet Archive, so that people like me (or worse off) don't have to spend much to get an otaky fix.
