He used to be on Ecto, and someone's infected computer must have that address in an address book. I get lots of bounces because one of my accounts allegedly sends mail too (given that it's a Unix server that I don't even log in to, I find that amusing at best). Her website doesn't mention it. Is Sketch Work Songs just the name of the collected mp3s on the site, or is it a release? Thanks to whomever mentioned Thea Gilmore's Loft Music. I didn't know she had a new one either, but I plan to order soon. For my part, Vienna Teng's Warm Strangers is probably the highlight of the year so far. Though I'm loving others like: Simon Wilcox - Smart FunctionKathleen Edwards - Live From the Bowery Ballroom (far too short, but really good)Anne Heaton - Give InJonatha Brooke - Back in the Circus and old stuff that's new to me, namely The Innocence Mission's Glow, much thanks to Neile JoAnn >From: Neile Graham >To: ecto@smoe.org >Subject: Re: Poll: Best new music 2004 >Date: Sat, 17 Jul 2004 08:48:37 -0700 > >Some of these are almost certainly 2003 releases, but I got them all >this year (except the Carina Round, which I include because it's a >recent US release) > >So, my favourites thus far: > >Viva Voce - Lovers, Lead the Way! >Jesca Hoop - Sketch Work Songs >Carina Round - The Disconnection >Regina Spektor - Soviet Kitsch >Inner - lovetheonlyway >Mudville - glory of man is not in vogue, the >PJ Harvey - Uh Huh Her >KUMA - That Moment of Silence Before a Disaster >Fiery Furnaces - Blueberry Boat > >--Neile > >-- >------------------------------------------------------------------------- >Neile Graham .... neile@sff.net/@drizzle.com ... >www.sff.net/people/neile >Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal ........ >www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines >Editor, The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ........... >www.ectoguide.org >Workshop Administrator, Clarion West ................ >www.clarionwest.org - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Is your PC infected? Hmm, despite acquiting over 150 CDs already this year, there really are few stand-outs--some of these came out in earlier years but I just found out about them this year. But here are my favorites: Nelly McKay - Get Away From Me - probably the freshest sounding music I've heard in a long time Rory Merritt Stitt - Harlequin/Narcissist - these albums came out in the past, but saw Rory at Folk Alliance and it really gave me new appreciation for his music Chris Brown/Kate Fenner - have purchased both their solo albums this year as well as most of hte back catalog. Diane Jarvi - Paper Heart - great collection from a great artist that really deserves to be more well known Stephanie Winters - Through the Storm - great cello music Zoe Lewis - finally heard one of her albums and have totally fallen in love with Fishbone/Wishbone/Funnybone--haven't got the new one yet, but looking forward to it Ember Swift - great live performer--albums don't quite live up to the energy and dynamics of the live performance, but still worth checking out Casey Stratton - great overproduced pop album (if you're into that kind of thing) by a guy that can easily be mistaken as a girl (vocally) Blondie - Curse of Blondie - great album by a great band ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #205 ***************************
