Hi, As always at the last minute, but: Is anyone lurking out there going to the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival this weekend? Camp Ecto has already been set up on the hill thanks to Clan Montville, and woj and I are heading up there shortly. If you'd like to stop by and say hello, please do! There is a note on the main message board labeled "CAMP ECTO" showing the exact location of our site, which should be easy to spot thanks to the "ectofest" banner we dusted off for the occasion. :) =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jul 2004 07:09:32 -0700 (PDT) From: Todd Pierce Subject: Re: I, Robot I haven't seen anyone who has actually read I,Robot respond to this thread yet so I am jumping in. I read I, Robot several times in middle school and went on to read Asimov's robot series and Foundation series. I haven't seen the movie yet - BUT - I can say the movie must be only a loose adaption because I, Robot is actually a collection of short stories, most of them set on other planets in the Solar System. Many of the stories deal with the beginning of the robots and the 3 Laws and how even with such seemingly simple and straightforward laws, there exist many loopholes that can lead to unexpected robot behaviour. In fact most of the stories are quite cerebral, with the main characters trying to figure out why robots are doing certain things, and eventually determining how the 3 Laws actually allowed such actions. There is not a lot of action and certainly no hordes of attacking robots. The movie sounds more like Asimov's robot detective novels, The Caves of Steel and The Naked Sun, which have a human detective and a robot partner investigating robot murders....but I guess 'I Robot' sounded better. Despite a very hot, muggy night, the show was delightful. Sting, was very nice, funny, warm, and flawless. The highlight of the evening for me, though, was Annie's performance. While I've always regarded her as talented, she's never been on my Goddess list. She is now. My friend and I kept turning to each other and commenting on how incredibly wonderful her voice was. Her recordings, although good, do not do her justice. The few live performances I've seen on television do not come close, either. She was also very warm and just lovely to the audience. Her set was heavily laden with R&B tunes that no one could sit still listening to. Of course, she did "Here Comes the Rain Again", "Why", and ended with an encore with an updated version of "Sweet Dreams" that rocked quite nicely, while retaining elements of the original. And speaking of rocking, "Missionary Man" was out of this world. Her low register rivals Happy's in full-throated intensity. What really impressed me about these two was that they both looked like they were just having a wonderful time performing for us. There was none of the phoned-in-I've-played-this-song-a-million-times tiredness that you see in some veterans. And Vickie, I could swear I saw Chris. He was too far away for me to catch up with him, and I lost him in the crowd, but I kept looking for both of you. Were you there? Maybe it was his evil twin...:) I'd love to see you again the next time you are in town! He's down in Kansas City working and he went to the concert with his brother, who had an extra ticket. He said they were about 10th row center. He went mainly for Annie, and wasn't disappointed. I'm sure he would agree with everything you said. Good eyes! :) Vickie ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jul 2004 21:42:55 +0100 From: "Adam K." Subject: good news/bad news for Jeff Buckley/Eva Cassidy fans Yes, I know there are many out there in ecto land, so here's the good news first: someone is writing a play about these two, and it will doubtless be directed by Trevor Nunn, one of the most reknowned theatre directors in England. The bad news is that the author will be Mrs Trevor Nunn, otherwise known as the actress Imogen Stubbs. She is responsible for "We Happy Few", currently playing in the West End (apparantly for not much longer) and I can tell you that there has not been a viler, more godawful, steaming piece of luvvied-up crap in the West End for many a year, star studded and expensively produced, all out of admiration/fear/toadying to Trevor Nunn. I had a free ticket and I wanted my money back. So, that's something to look forward to, then. Can't even think of compiling a top anything for this year, as it's all relative. After a sudden glut of uninspired music from those who I'd hoped would know better, Peter Hammill's "Incoherence", at first disappointing, is looking better and better. Besides, not sure how I rate the new PJ. Half the time I think it's lazy rather than lo-fi, stuff she tossed off in a couple of hours without much thought. Other times I think not. I prefer the second half tothe first, bar Shame, which is brill. The rest sounds like offcuts. Still, I've got a few months to get used to it, and more new stuff on the way. adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jul 2004 18:58:51 -0500 From: kerrywhite@webtv.net (kerry white) Subject: Ecto-ness Hi, a while back I asked the group if anyone had the wherewithal and will to run some of my tapes of Vinyl through a click and pop remover. Someone answered and I have not asked him so I will not mention his name BUT he turned much of it into a WAV file and did some deep playing w/ parameters long before he was ready with the click and pop removal. It took awhile, he had his own life getting into the way and such, but, what he has done is just amazing. Both in action and in thought: after a longish piece of music I had an excerpt of the middle of it as the next cut. He put track increment points at the beginning and end of the part so I can get at that one piece to repeat or run the whole thing. Many is the time when what I wanted 'cleaned', he had the CD and I got that as a copy. I, of course, have been sending him some Karmic Balance stuff. 8-) This is Ectosyncrasy at its best!
