Does anyone know if Holly Palmer's "I Confess" full-length CD was ever released? A number of interviews, as well as her own web site, hint that it came out in 2003, but you'd never know it by shopping around at the usual CD vendors. I confess I haven't, but I caught a fragment of an interview with Alex Proyas, the director, to the effect that the movie "re-envisions" the book while supposedly remaining true to the spirit of it. I take that to mean that the movie and book both have robots in 'em. I actually liked Proyas' own _Dark City_ quite a bit. But I've gotten so tired of Hollywood's predilection for bastardizing the best printed science fiction (Lynch's _Dune_, the POS otherwise known as _Millennium_), that these days I just don't bother. It's entirely possible that this movie is an entertaining bit of fluff in its own right, but I appear to lack the mental discipline to dissociate my memories of the source material from my expectations of the film that bears the same name. YMMV, of course. Full disclosure time: I was (and still am) blissfully ignorant of the original Tank Girl comics when I saw that movie, and to this day still enjoy its goofy, campy silliness. It's the epitome of guilty pleasure movies for me. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Village gets bizarre new name A remote village has been "renamed" in a symbolic gesture by residents opposed to plans for a nearby wind farm. The protest group put up a new name sign at the entrance to Llanfynydd, in south-west Wales, claiming it is called Llanhyfryddawelllehynafolybarcudprindanfygythiadtrienusyrhafnauole. The move saw the Carmarthenshire community temporarily eclipse Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwchllantysiliogogogoch in North Wales, which currently holds the title for having the longest name in Britain. The 66-letter name, adopted by the Community of Llanfynydd Against Wind-Power Station (Claws) for one day, means: "A quiet beautiful village, an historic place with rare Kite under threat from wretched blades". - -jason np Cerys Matthews - Cockahoop (to keep up the welsh theme...) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Jul 2004 12:17:17 -0400 From: fingerpuppets Subject: Re: best of 2004 / village of Llanhyfryddawelllehynafolybarcudprindanfygythiadtrienusyrhafnauole one time at band camp, gordodo@optonline.net (gordodo@optonline.net) said: >Laura Veirs - Carbon Glacier yesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyes! i haven't gotten a copy of this record yet as it's shortly, finally going to see a stateside release (on nonesuch) but i've heard several tracks on wfmu and every one has been stunning. i just picked up her first two rekkids and haven't had a chance to listen to them yet, but the previous effort, _troubled by the fire_, is very good. many thanks to noe veneble for pointing laura out a while ago! woj ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Jul 2004 13:12:10 EDT From: FAMarcus@aol.com Subject: Re: I, Robot?? I've just moved to Louisville, Kentucky, and there seems to be a few Ecto-friendly venues in town. I understand that the Rudyard Kipling will even give artists all the admission $$, while the bar gets the food and bev $$. It looks like it only seats about 50 in the main room. Any other ecto folk in the area? Like I said, I've just moved here, and am learning my way around. Now if we could get Happy on tour again!
