In the last year the dollar has dropped like a rock against the pound, euro, yen, etc. This ends up raising the cost on foreign product. So for music fans, this means the price of imports is skyrocketing!!! Likely the other side of that coin is that for overseas artists and independent labels, sales are falling. well, i havent posted here in ages, (tho i read regularly) but this one caught my eye. the devaluing dollar has also had another effect - it has made american music wayyy cheaper for the rest of the world. since our local currency here has been strengthening we find ourselves in a situation where the dollar is now nearly half of the value it was two and a half years ago. strangely enough this has not been reflected in the price of music in local music shops!!! the price of cds there continues to climb - forcing people to buy over the internet from the us. even with shipping etc the cds are now less than half the price (eg - shops = R 240.00 (around USD40.00), while internet = USD 15.00 (Around R 90.00).......... i think we are about to see the internet cd buying phenomonon become mainstream - it will be sad to see local cd shops fold & die - but i guess its what they deserve for being such profiteering ripoff bastards....... also, i would imagine that the artists themselves would benefit more from internet shopping?? (especially the ones that have their own sales facilities) ron ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Jul 2004 03:00:04 -0400 (EDT) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friends... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ******************* Cathy Guetzlaff (no Email address) ******************** ************************* Vlad (no Email address) ************************* *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Cathy Guetzlaff Mon July 18 1955 Cancer Vlad Sat July 18 1970 Warning: severe tire damage Jani Pinola Thu July 20 1972 Jonquil Alvin Brattli Sun July 27 1969 Lefthanded Christy Eger Smith Thu July 27 1944 Horse Crossing Shirley Ye July 27 Lioness woj Sun July 28 1968 children at play John Relph Sat July 28 1962 Leo Bob Kollmeyer Wed July 28 1971 Leo Steve Lusky Tue July 29 1952 Bike! She is a part of the Pantene Pro V contest this year and I absolutely love her song and voice. Her name is Marie Digby and you can hear her song on the Pantene site (and also the 2 other finalists): http://pantene.com/en_US/provoice/voting.jhtml I don't think she has a website yet. Her voice reminds of a friend of mine (www.jessicaharp.net - new website and songs coming soon) a little bit. I have some other recommendations and will post more later. jessica - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- jessica weiser :: www.jessicaweiser.com AFTER SILENCE songs now available on iTunes! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Jul 2004 17:52:41 -0400 From: fingerpuppets Subject: Re: OAC: Free Bjork Tribute Album catching up on some old ecto messages... one time at band camp, Kjetil Torgrim Homme said: >[Hanson Ho]: > > > > For this ill-fated project, READ: Interpreting Bjork, Ben did a > > wonderful rendition of Joga, on par, IMO, with Death Cab's cover > > of All is Full of Love (very cool kareoke song, BTW). > >thanks for the tip. like most tribute albums, it is a bit uneven >(some tracks have male vocalists -- what were they _thinking_?). my >favourite is Kaitlyn ni Donovan's Hunter. does anybody happen to still have these bjork tribute mp3s? they're no longer on the site (well, it has been 1.5 years!). looks like the tribute is now available for sale, so i'll probably pick this up eventually, but i'm very interested in hearing kaitlyn ni donovan's cover of "hunter" now! woj n.p. red sox/angels ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jul 2004 12:07:42 +1000 From: andrew fries Subject: Re: the presidents impact on the music business On Sunday 18 July 2004 4:56 pm, Ron wrote: > i think we are about to see the internet cd buying phenomonon become > mainstream - it will be sad to see local cd shops fold & die - but i guess > its what they deserve for being such profiteering ripoff bastards....... The same phenomenon can be observed here; there are several reasons why prices of CDs should fall, but they never did. If anything, they are getting more expensive, and yes, I think record stores are feeling the pinch (I know I haven't been to one in months!). But I think the shops, especially the smaller ones that aren't part of big retail chains are not the profiteering ripoff bastards, as you put it. Their profit margins are already very thin; it is the recording companies who collect the profits and ensure prices never fall. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #200 ***************************
