I sit here 8 1/2 months pregnant, expecting my first child and attempting to finish my third album before aforementioned baby arrives! As a liberal/agnostic artist and native New Yorker I can hardly identify with the politics and antics that currently dominate the White House. I am not ashamed of who I am, and I am among other things an American, although I am deeply disturbed and ashamed of the politics and decisions being made in my name. I find it equally bewildering that a large percentage of this country endorses those decisions and supports this administration. Bush does represent a large part of America and for that reason I can not easily shed the stigma that goes with Bush. I don't think we can dissociate ourselves that easily from the immense stain Bush has spilled on our nation's reputation. Having spent some time recently in Nashville I was amazed at how blindly many artists I respect support Bush and the war in Iraq. This country is deeply divided... The terrorists of 9/11 were sadly successful in driving a wedge between the conservative and liberal elements of America. I think it's important that we all take responsibility for our country's actions. If we are ashamed of the current administration we must become active in replacing it. I am ashamed that compared to most European citizens Americans are profoundly under-informed. As a nation we are incredibly passive and I include myself. My French or German counterpart might be organizing demonstrations and hounding politicians... I feel a sense of powerlessness that is most likely unjustified. It is perhaps a symptom of a greater problem. Political inertia. My idea of activism is signing all of Moveon.org's petitions and making a few phone calls per their suggestion... I suppose I am ashamed of myself and therefore, in effect, ashamed of being an American. It isn't enough to disagree or complain about the way things are. We have to do something or else we truly are supporting the administration by default. Bush represents us whether we like it or not. It is our duty to make ourselves heard and be defiant. Do whatever you can...Perhaps it isn't much, but I am doing way more than I ever have in the past. Beyond actively demonstrating against the war and the above mentioned gestures, this is the first time in my life that I made monetary contributions to both the DNC and to the Kerry campaign. Every little bit counts, right? It still feels like it isn't enough... I know in my heart it isn't. Any day now I will become a mother to an American citizen (well, in fact half American half French : ) I owe it to this little person to step up to the plate and educate myself. To take some action. Our children will inherit this mess and I do not want to feel ashamed of the legacy I am leaving to the next generation. Just my 2 cents. I saw that the other day. Very funny. I'd never watched a Flash animation in my life until I saw some of the excellent ones at http://web.takebackthemedia.com/ Stefan Adler, thanks for the http://www.bushflash.com/ address, which has so many informative and powerful animations. Any American who's not really into politics and not sure what all the fuss is about should at least spend a little time watching those Flash animations. They're a great way to see at a glance some of the issues before delving further if they feel like it. I'd recommend http://web.takebackthemedia.com/ first. Fantastic posts Ellen and Jenny. Steve, I don't turn my back on anything, except the men at the top who are gleefully trashing our reputation and the constitution, and killing and torturing people in my name. I said I love my country, but we are America and have to take responsibility for that. I doubt the kid who's getting sodomized by a U.S. soldier in front of his mother is capable of seeing the difference between *that* American citizen and the American citizens who don't support Bush or the war. I doubt the kid who's getting tortured in front of his father to try to get daddy to talk (even if daddy is just a common criminal and has no more knowledge of anything important than your average petty criminal here) is only going to target the "bad" Americans when he grows up enough to join the terrorist movement. These things and worse are being done IN MY NAME, using my tax dollars. How can I not feel responsible and ashamed? Btw, haven't heard about those stories? That's because the mainstream press is too chicken to come forward with them. Look how long it took to get word of the other Abu Gharib tortures out. People in other countries know so much that we don't, and they shake their heads in amazement that we're so uninformed and misinformed. I remember a time in America when we used to snort in scorn at how the Russian media would lie and keep the real news from the Russian people, and yet we welcome the same thing being done to us now. It's embarrassing to watch the (brilliant) movie "Control Room" and see Arabs watching CNN's war coverage. Watching Rumsfeld and Bush lie directly into the camera and knowing that the American people are lapping it up. To see Bush stamp his feet and say that our POWs better be treated according to the Geneva Convention, while secretly trying to get around the Geneva Convention himself is disgusting. I cried so often during that movie, but never harder than when one of the Al-Jazeera journalists said (paraphrasing) "I believe in the American constitution. I believe in the American people. I believe they'll stop Bush." He has more faith than I do. The world is watching these elections closer than any other election. Bush was appointed, not elected, so as of yet he's not really "our" fault. If he's elected again though, the American people will be as scorned in the eyes of the world as Bush is. Unlike most of their >"musical" victims, they actually let you hear Megan perform. I like the British version of this show much better, but I was astounded to see the changes in Megan. She looks wonderful now and without compromising a thing. When I see a show like this I think of the women I know or see on the street and think how much better they could look and wonder why they choose the looks they do. Of course $5 grand and the expertise of pros helps a lot. I'd like to submit to the male version, but I don't look awful enough to pique their interest. I have bought clothes based on ideas in WNTW and QE. Seeing this reminds me of Jewel, who I got to see in her coffee house days when she performed for a month in Portland. She transformed her look almost as much, but over a longer period of time. ObEcto: Megan's music is a little too crunchy for me. I'd like to hear what else she does.
