Janis Ian (www.janisian.com) is coming to Europe this autumn. I am considering being totally nuts and driving three hours to see her on a Saturday night in Milton Keynes. The closest she's coming to us is London, two hours away, but it's a Tuesday night, which means getting about four hours sleep before having to teach. I just can't do that any longer -- and get through the rest of the week. So, I may drive three hours each way, but it's a Saturday. Ellen, who missed Ian the last time she toured the UK. ===== "Literature stops in 1100. Doesn't anyone remember how she considered herself more an activist than a singer? Doesn't anyone remember how much the right-wing hated her? And how she was considered unAmerican? So many of her songs were about politically hot topics. She was never one to back down. And...what was the original Woodstock about? Remember?? So I think talk of politics on this music list is totally appropriate. fleur ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Jul 2004 08:26:52 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Janis Ian UK tour Hi, Ellen mentioned: >Janis Ian (www.janisian.com) is coming to Europe this >autumn. She wasn't doing as much cool stuff as in the past with her acoustic guitar run through the effects board, but it was still a great show. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Jul 2004 09:13:45 EDT From: FAMarcus@aol.com Subject: Re: Political singers In a message dated 7/15/04 8:44:23 AM Eastern Daylight Time, ctrymaus@gmail.com writes: And...what was the original Woodstock about? When my husband reminded me it was a three-hour drive, I reminded him of the Premiere Lodge near the venue. :) The problem with the London show is that I need more than four hours sleep before I go teach the next day. Milton Keynes will mean we can stay overnight and drive home Sunday if necessary. And I've been to that venue before; all the seats really are pretty good there. I first saw Janis Ian perform in '75 in Philadelphia. I was a kid -- went with my sister. The last time I saw her was back in Boulder. I've been here for about five years now, so it's been a while. I think we'll try it. :) Ellen ===== "Literature stops in 1100. There is a difference. He doesnt reflect my beliefs or views, nor do I think he reflects many Americans views at all. I think that this distinction is quite blurred when I'm reading many of the posts here. U cant really say America is this or America is that simply based on what GW does. I dont need to tell anyone that we are much more complicated than that. It would be like saying all in Germany during the 30's were for racial cleansing. So if I had my druthers I'd rather see "Bush is this" or "Bush is that", and not America.... we all arn't. As far as Vicki being ashamed to be an American, thats just sad. I think in that statement you turned your back on a rich history and a wonderful country of whom I'm proud to be a citizen. I agree with you wholeheartedly; however, when you live outside the US and read/hear about polls that state the majority of the US approves the war, believes there is a link between Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden, gives Bush a high approval rating, you start to wonder. I know that his approval rating has slumped now and that more and more Americans oppose the war at this time. But it was fairly amazing to live outside the US (I am an American), see his low approval rating prior to 11 September 2001 and then watch how high it went after that. That alone makes people think that where Bush goes, the country goes. It didn't help that the Democrats weren't playing the role of the opposition; it's no wonder they did so poorly in the 2002 elections. It was also incredible to be visiting in the US in October 2001 and read the newspapers. The Philadelphia Inquirer, a Pulitzer-winning paper, buried the war in Afghanistan on page 11 one day. It was sort of astonishing -- I went through culture shock in my own country. I was staying in a place without the Internet; I kept running off to the local public library so I could read on-line papers from the UK and find out a little more of what was happening in Afghanistan. Ellen, ex-pat who watched Dan Rather of CBS confess on Newsnight (BBC2) how the US media had been censored -- and was censoring itself, him included -- post 11 September 2001. I don't think he made that disclosure on American television. Did he? ===== "Literature stops in 1100.
