I don't want to start a fight. I don't want to be the cause of a flame war. I don't want to upset anyone. I've been fiercely, vocally, rudely political elsewhere, but I haven't said a word here. But... Bush is doing harm to this country that our great grandchildren will be paying for in both money and lives. D'ja know that we tortured kids in Abu Ghraib, in order to get their fathers to talk? You'll be hearing about it in the next few days unless you live outside America, in which case you've probably already heard about it. (http://www.thismodernworld.com/) People, little thanks to the mainstream media, are finally waking up to the problems he's caused, is still causing, and will cause, if he's re-elected. I was reading an editorial that talked about how Americans are starting to open their eyes and look around. I started singing "Waking Up" in my head. Get it out and listen to it. It's almost always got *something* of interest on -- it focuses mainly on music of all kinds, with a segment on books at the very end. The thing is, we never know what we're going to get, because the episode descriptions only ever mention one of the segments, and since it's a two-hour show, that usually leaves at least an hour and a half up to mystery. Yesterday's episode was only described as "Rod Stewart croons his greatest hits", so imagine my surprise when in the intro they announced that Carina Round would be in the second hour! She performed "Elegy" and "Monument" from _The Disconnection_, and in between there was an interview segment. The whole thing lasted about 15 minutes. Very cool stuff. Yes, Jason, we're holding onto this for you. :) If anyone else is interested, let me know and we'll see what we can do. (p.s. Susan Werner taped a segment for this show a couple months ago ... last I heard they were planning on airing it "in late July", which is almost here. I'll post the exact date if I manage to find out about it in advance.) =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jul 2004 22:26:50 -0400 From: "Robert Lovejoy" Subject: Re: One moment of your time I have never been so frightened for my country. I read in the news yesterday that even some conservatives are unhappy with this administration. I hope so. I see many, many supporters of it, and I wish I could reach them. They think Bush stands for less government. But his administration is behind the Patriot Act, one of the most blood-curdling things to happen to a formerly free-er society that I can imagine. And they lied about the reasons they wanted to go to Iraq. Say what you will about Farenheit 9/11, facts are facts. They are talking of resuming the draft to fight this unholy war. They are talking of putting off elections. They are keeping the population scared, managing the alert status to a tee (notice how they announced the latest threat right after the dems picked a VP?). As Ben Franklin stated, people who are willing to give up their freedom for their security deserve neither and will lose both. I'm with Patti on this: We are love and the future We stand in the midst of fury and weariness Who dreams of joy and radiance? Who dreams of war and sacrifice? Our sacred realms are being squeezed Curtailing civil liberties Recruit the dreams that sing to thee Let freedom ring ("Jubilee", from Trampin') We're waking up, all right, but about half of this country still supports this lunacy. I love what Al Franken said about Liberals and Conservatives. The right wing loves America as a child loves their mother. She simply can do no wrong. The left wing loves America as an adult relationship - there are problems and they need to be talked about. Until we can get more of this country to wake up and realize what's going on, I can't rest easy. I've been on this earth for 57 years and have never seen my country get this low, to attack another country on its own, without direct provocation or world support, to reduce freedom at home in the name of security, to be so arrogant. So many screwed up priorities. The rich need to get richer, and this administration is their godsend. Thanks, Vickie, for bringing this up on ecto. I love the talk of music, and though I am mostly lurking these days, I still read it daily. We here on ecto may be waking up, but I can only hope and pray more Americans do so before the election. This year I have to resist the third party temptation, and take as strong a stand as I can against the present administration. The pendulum has gone too far to the right and has been there too long; surely it will go back, else we find ourselves where Germany was in the early thirties. One show (I think it was 26 Jan 2003) had 90 minutes of NRBQ, then the next week may be classical violin, this program is the most diverse (and consistently good) music program on TV. Glad you saw Carina Round, I had not seen her before, but she was very intriguing, I want to hear more of her. - -- John ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jul 2004 20:23:01 -0700 From: Troy J Shadbolt Subject: Megan Slankard on TLC 07/16/04 Hi Ectophiles, Yup, I'm at it again. My friend Megan Slankard is going to be on Television this Friday (the 16th) on TLC's show "What Not to Wear". For those that don't know the shows premises, friends & family nominate a fashion victim for a $5,000 fashion makeover. Megan was selected and given the "treatment" back in May, and her episode will finally air this Friday on TLC at 9pm eastern and pacific. Unlike most of their "musical" victims, they actually let you head Megan perform. So if you TiVo or have nothing better to do this Friday, give Megan a whirl. - -troy np: Blame Sally's new self-titled studio album ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #193 ***************************
