Subject: juliet turner Hey, Jason, Ah, Juliet -- if I'd known you were going, I'd have made the effort. I wanted to go, but the show I was doing conflicted with the original gig date, and then I found that it had been, fortuitously, rescheduled after the run --- but, lacking funds, still decided not to go. It was a tough choice, as I've only seen her do support gigs, and I was eager to see her do a headline act. I'm glad she was good -- she's always seemed like a really nice person, if a little nerve-wracked (tall, too -- very tall, if I remember). I still can't make up my mind about the album, although I'd recommend it to anyone (odd sounding though that may be). The reggae workouts seem a bit prolonged, and even one of my fave tracks -- Vampire -- seems to have strayed in from some summer blockbuster, but I still can't get lines and melodies out of my head, which is a good, good sign. Hope you picked up "Let's Hear it for Pizza" -- it's a lovely album, and "Short Loan Only" had me weeping buckets (in a masculine kinda way). Now working again, I've taken delivery of my first batch of US cds, courtesy of our good friends CD Baby (god, those guys make me laugh). I'm currently listening to Wendy Ip's newest (admire her pop proficiency, but her voice is definitely an acquired taste), and I'm also lining up Melissa Ferrick's latest, as well as Willow's "Burning" (thanks for that tip, Jason) and they threw in a cd by someone called Clare Muldaur. Anyone know anything about this artist? Next step is to track down Patty Griffin's latest. Sorry, meth, that's just the way I am. adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 03 Jul 2004 13:36:44 -0400 From: "JoAnn Whetsell" Subject: vancouver folk festival Is anyone going to the Vancouver Folk Festival this year? I've been toying with the idea (never been to one of these things before) and would like to meet up with some people if I end up going. One thing I'm not sure of is if I can go as I don't have a passport. I do have a driver's license and a copy of my birth certificate, but I've heard different things about entrance requirements. Anyway, the festival is July 16-18. Their website is http://www.thefestival.bc.ca and ecto-discussed artists on the schedule include Jorane, Patty Larkin, Martin Carthy, The Wailin' Jennys, Kaki King, Po' Girl, Janis Ian, and others. Alas, we're not, but I wish we were with that lineup!! woj and I went in 1999, when Veda Hille was on the main stage. It's an excellent festival in a beautiful spot, well worth the trip. (What's their theme this year? When we went it was "Music of Mongolia", and they had one of the six stages dedicated to just that, featuring some ensembles that had never been allowed out of the PRC before. Incredible stuff.) >One thing I'm not >sure of is if I can go as I don't have a passport. If you're driving, your driver's license will be adequate, though it can't hurt to have the birth certificate with you anyway. If you're flying, a passport is the path of least resistance, though a driver's license and an official copy of your birth certificate (with the seal on it and everything -- trust me, a photocopy won't cut it (voice of experience here :})) is supposedly still all you need if you're just going into Canada for a pleasure trip. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 03 Jul 2004 18:31:09 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Fwd: Lys shows--July 10 Bethel, CT/July 16 Seattle, WA Hi, Lys Guillorn's latest mailing is below -- she's heading out to the Seattle area, and I heartily encourage the Seattle contingent to check her out. I just got back (about an hour ago) from driving to Banff & Jasper. I crossed the Canadian border a few days ago. Going into Canada, a drivers license was ok. Coming back, the birth certificate seemed needed. I say seemed since I didn't try to push things. As a test, I provided my drivers license and they asked for a birth certificate. Since I had a passport too, I just handed that over. I don't know if I could have gotten in under additional interogation, but didn't feel that was an experiment I needed to try :) The guy at the border also said a drivers license and an EXPIRED passport would be ok too (assuming I was reluctant to provide my passport since it was expired). He said the drivers license didn't prove citizenship, but a birth certificate OR a passport (even an expired one) did. neal ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #184 ***************************
