SUSAN McKEOWN / "Sweet Liberty" / World Village 468029 -- REVIEWS "McKeown gets it done, not only on this track but on each and every one, making familiar material fresh again with her richly expressive voice and unerring sense of style. I love Irish music, and I've been listening to it off and on for a long time. After listening to "Sweet Liberty" twice through, I'm tempted to give all my other Irish CDs away, because this feels like the only one I'll ever need." - - Paul Dennison, THE REGISTER GUARD, April 23, 2004 "SUSAN MCKEOWN From the bottomless trove of Irish ballads, Susan McKeown's "Sweet Liberty" (World Village/Harmonia Mundi) comes up with songs of love, emigration and battle. Her voice has a mournful purity, and it's usually backed by pristinely folky guitar, fiddle and whistles. But she adds surprises: trip-hop electronics, mariachi trumpet and even Ensemble Tartit from Mali sharing a Gaelic call-and-response song that taunts, "May a peeled potato with the moon in its middle choke you."Jon Pareles, THE NEW YORK TIMES, April 4, 2004 If there's some dividing line between Celtic traditionalism and eclectic contemporary songwriting, McKeown refuses to acknowledge it. And with a voice as warm, resonant and versatile as hers, why should she?" - Marty Hughley, THE OREGONIAN, April 23, A Dubliner long domiciled in New York, McKeown gently extends herself on an album that at first appears to be a competent rather than exciting exploration of Irish traditional song, but which subtly moves the goalposts in key areas. Go straight to Track 4, Oro Mhile Gra/A Thousand Times My Love, an unlikely yet astonishingly successful blend of Irish and African music featuring a match-winning performance from Northern Mali Tuareg band Ensemble Tartit. Breathtaking, in fact. Fast forward to Track 6 and Eggs in Her Basket, a gipsy song once recorded by Martin Carthy here transmuted into a smouldering Latin fable courtesy of Israel Torres' evocative horn and other members of Mariachi Real de Mexico. Such inspired use of counter cultures encourages deeper examination of the more apparently straightforward tracks and these too offer plenty of interest. A deeply dramatic The Winter it is Past (a little-known version of Curragh Of Kildare), an outstanding Fair Annie and a desperately poignant version of When I Was On Horseback, featuring the last performance of the great Johnny Cunningham, who died just hours after playing the heartbreakingly mournful fiddle that dominates the track. It's quite an epitaph." - Colin Irwin, fRoots, June 2004 "Every song on Susan McKeown's album Sweet Liberty is credited to "Traditional" as author, which is frequently the case with her recordings. But McKeown's approach to this material, which she has gathered from friends and from old books and recordings (as recounted in her notes), is often anything but traditional. "Oro Mhile Gra (A Thousand Times My Love)" is a collaboration with Ensemble Tartit, a singing group from Mali, and its combination of Celtic and African elements makes for a stirring hybrid. On "Eggs in Her Basket," McKeown is accompanied by the Mexican group Mariachi Real de Mexico, again adding an unusual interpretation to a traditional Irish tune. But even when she is using musicians who perform in a more familiar Celtic style, such as Flook, the Anglo-Irish quartet that backs her on the leadoff track, "The Wee Birds All Have Come and Gone/Fisherman's," McKeown makes her versions of the songs distinctive by her combinations of different compositions, her striking arrangements, and her haunting voice, which at times recalls Sandy Denny's (and therefore also that of Denny sound-alike Natalie Merchant, whom McKeown has accompanied in performance). Sweet Liberty is traditional enough to please fans of Celtic music in its oldest forms, but it also suggests new directions for the style, and it serves as a showcase for an impressive singer." William Ruhlmann, ALL MUSIC GUIDE "Beautifully understated Irish folk music driven with acoustic guitar, whistles, fiddle, and harmonium. With a voice as beautiful and strong as hers, one wonders why McKeown is not bigger name in the genre."- Tad Hendrickson, AMAZON.COM The evening was a delight for old fans and new, to get a chance to hear material from this marvelous new CD and hear the continued brilliance, warmth of not only Susan's voice but her overall musicianship and the art of song collecting. This is a true testament to the immigrant experience in America, coming to these shores and influencing and being influenced by the immense amount of music and culture around her." Concert/CD review - JIGTIME.COM It's a testament to her ability to take traditional Irish tunes and make them relevant." - - Marian Liu, SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS April 12, 2004 "Susan McKeown, "Sweet Liberty" -- The haunting Irish vocalist offers a beautiful set of traditional songs dressed with elegant and at times surprising arrangements. Yes, this recent tour at almost every major US city in the country (to promote her new CD) is a sit-down show, with video tape about the making of her CD, and a q&a session in the middle of two music sets... it is specifically more low-key than her usual bar shows. That's her stage persona, she's actually quite shy when she meets someone she likes... I saw "Drive" the first time she did the song in public (on 14 Oct 1999) and I've seen her do it a total of 20 times... the song has grown from 6 minutes to about 15 or 20, with numerous ad-libs along the way. BTW, she may have done everything on this CD... except for one track, she uses Teddy Goldstein for one small guitar part on "Street Light", but everything else (writing, all instruments, produced, engineered, arranged, and mixed) by Melissa, this is what she hears in her head.
