The impression I got was that it was a more low-key > evening than her usual shows. On the other hand, I just saw Melissa play an abbreviated set at DC's Pride festival and she was, er, somewhat out of control. In a good way, as far as I was concerned, but I think my partner was a little off-put (he's always liked her CDs, but has never seen her live). Given that she was only given 20 minutes, she ended up playing a few songs and a few medleys of songs. The most striking was "Drive", off of _Freedom_, which she started using the opening verse of Prince's "Darling Nikki" and which seemed devoted to the purpose of getting every young lesbian in the audience into bed with her. It was *fabulous*! jeff ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jun 2004 13:21:55 +0100 From: "Adam K." Subject: Robert Quine I know it's not particularly ecto, but I just read of Robert Quine's death (probable suicide). He was a remarkable guitarist, who started out with Richard Hell and has played with people like Lou Reed and Tom Waits. I know him from his work on Matthew Sweet's best material, particularly the "Girlfriend" album. He was a lot older than the people he played with (he was 61 when he died) and the photo accompanying the obit I read made him look like a preppy version of Duke from Doonesbury. Well, just thought I'd say that he was a great guitarist who will be much missed, that's all. adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jun 2004 10:32:22 -0500 From: Carolyn Andre Subject: Re: melissa ferrick At 07:03 AM 6/20/2004, Jeffrey Burka wrote: >meth sez: > > > I'm don't know if she's doing this everywhere, but Melissa recently did > > a show at the Iron Horse in Northampton where she did audience q&a > > between songs. Her current tour supporting her new self-produced, etc., CD, "The Other Side" consists of a 5 minute iMovie of her explaining about making the record plus two solo acoustic sets separated by a Q&A session. Last Thursday night in Chicago, she mentioned that she currently was in a place that she enjoyed the solo performing with acoustic guitar, and also that this show format was trying to both reach/bring back her "older fans" but also appeal to her younger fans, while avoiding the "everyone jumping around drunk" (or something quite similar describing the band shows :-). Tho it was amusing about the Q&A session - people were reluctant to come up to the mike, so she resorted to calling on people with hands up in the audience. But the "Q"s were turning into requests, so she also commented that it "was Q&A, not a request line" I have to admit that I called the venue earlier in the day to confirm whether there were seats or not, and was quite pleased to hear that I could sit my old ph*rt posterior down and actually enjoy the music. I'd not attended the last several of her band/Brian shows because, while I don't mind standing during a really dynamic show, I'm just not too keen on the hours of standing *before* the music starts! BTW - the new show does primarily feature songs off the new album, but also resurrected a variety of earlier material, inevitably including the audience favorite, "Drive", now expanded to probably at least 10 minutes by a series of adlibs. I thought the new material was reminiscent of some of her Massive Blur and Willing to Wait, which got me hooked on her originally. Oh -and she broke strings twice, slightly above average ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jun 2004 12:43:45 -0400 From: "Jenny Bruce" Subject: French Singers Dave, I'll have to check these women out! Always interested in hearing new music. Helene Segara sounds vaguely familiar. Never heard of the other women. I love Kate Bush and am very curious to hear Emma Shapplin. I'm impressed and I'm sure the French would be so happy to know that there are Americans avidly listening to "Freedom" singers : ) I'll let you know what I think of the lyrics. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to look super-hip to my young teenage French nieces and nephews! Have a great Sunday. One of the last studio albums he sat in on (if not the last -- his web site indicates as such, but I'm not sure if it's completely up to date) was Lys Guillorn's eponymous CD. Lys is a local (Connecticut) artist whose former band, Jargon Society performed at the last ectofest. There is a short commemorative note from Lys on the front page of her web site, . I would highly recommend checking out Lys' CD, especially if you like sparse, kinda spooky stuff (I believe a term she uses to describe her music is "alt twang"). CD Baby has it, at . It's one of the best CDs I've ever heard from a Connecticut-based artist. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jun 2004 18:02:56 -0400 From: AzeemAK@aol.com Subject: Re: carla bruni << she 's got this slighly raspy, cool voice and some pretty great laidback songs. forget what you may have read in the tabloids(hey is that just me?) and give it a chance. >> Hear hear! Although Melissa had planned to do the entire "Other Side" project herself, at one point Anne Heaton came over and was going to sing on a track. Somehow in the course of the evening, she decided not to, commenting that only Melissa should sing backup on her own songs. ... Melissa also commented about Anne's new CD. At one point, Melissa talked about how great Sarah Harmer's new album was. She was *very* enthusiastic about it, and encouraged the audience to learn about Harmer. (I can't remember her exact comment, but it had to do with the audience not knowing who Sarah was, but knowing Ferrick ...which was good, but that we should still check Sarah out) ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #171 ***************************
