Looks like Sarah Slean will be playing at Genghis Cohen (www.genghiscohen.com) Tuesday, July 6th; Wednesday, July 14th; Tuesday July 20th; and Wednesday July 28th. All shows except the 20th start at 9:30 with the 20th starting at 8:30. Also, Anne Heaton will be there on the 29th of July at 8:00. Melissa Ferrick's playing on the 25th of this month (june) at McCabe's in Santa Monica, then on the 26th at Largo. Juliana Hatfield is at the Knitting Factory on Wednesday the 23rd. Dresden Dolls, in addition to being on KCRW as Sherry pointed out, will be at The Viper Room on the 24th, where I just saw one of my favorite bands of the past year, The Like, on Monday. And, hey, The Like played in NYC with Ben Lee at the Knitting Factory last night. Their website, www.ilikethelike.com, is currently being retooled, but I believe they'll be in San Francisco before the end of the month. Absolutely fun indie-pop from the teenaged daughters of Tony Berg, Mitchell Froom, and Pete Thomas. Harkening back to the music of Cocteau Twins and Slowdive, this new CD by Floridas AGS ripples with chiming guitars, plucked mandolins, buoyant basslines, and the angelic vocals of Erin Welton. While they do not break new ground, the melodies are intoxicating enough to banish complaints of the copycat syndrome. Anyone who likes shimmering, blissful pop will love this. Y'know, I didn't bother to check in advance, but I assume so. I just did a quick check of the message boards on the official website and didn't see that anyone has posted there. It was great to see you in WV, OH, MI, and IN. Thanks for coming out to see us. The Village Voice gave our record release show this Friday 6/18 Critic9s Pick! "Suran Song in Stag: their previous album was a blatant Gang of Four homage featuring a Duran Duran cover that starred Marshal Mathers9 "coming out". Their new CD, Kitty Igloo & the Plastic Stereo has original melodies Sleater-Kinney should envy, plus lyrics opting for Joe Strummer over Bruce Springsteen. But mostly, this sly guerilla-art duo still recall the everyday-voiced herky-jerk girl punk of Delta 5 and Bush Tetras." Our NYC record release show is: 10 PM sharp! Friday, 6/18 Arlene Grocery 95 Stanton Street bet. Ludlow and Orchard Do you know folks in the city who might enjoy our show? Would you please let them know about Friday? If you live near NYC, we hope to see you! ********************************************* You can buy our new CD at the show, or order it on line at http://www.cruelmusic.com You might be curious about this Jersey Beat review for our Kitty Igloo & The Plastic Stereo: "There are albums that you listen to and they basically just do the trick, supplying a solid half hour or so of satisfying sonic entertainment. Then there are those occasional, striking, extraordinary works of true art which cut an immediate beeline to your nerve center and force you to think, feel, and become more alert in a way that's nothing short of amazing. Kitty Igloo & The Plastic Stereo is one of those albums. There's something going on here with robust, yet haunting vocals, fat, throbbing bass lines, relentless drum beats, and the fiercely keen and incisive songwriting that's truly phenomenal. All your preconceived notions of what rock is and is not are gleefully turned on their ear. The net impact of this incredible music is equally visceral and intellectual: Kitty Igloo & The Plastic Stereo is that rare, exceptional album which makes you think and shake your ass simultaneously." -Joe Wawyrzniak - ----- End forwarded message ----- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jun 2004 17:07:52 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Dresden Dolls Hi, Last night a bunch of us saw the Dresden Dolls at Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ. The capsule review: Best ... Dolls ... show ... EVER :) Despite the fact that the crowd included a couple dozen young people clearly on something besides alcohol (my guess is ecstasy but who knows) who decided to become the world's first waltzing mosh pit (I still have a huge bruise on my toe to show for that), the show was amazing. So amazing, in fact, that I couldn't bring myself to get out of bed to go to work today. ;) Now *that*'s a good night. I don't remember the exact set list, but I know the show started as always with "Good Day", then they went right into "Backstabber", which is always a highlight. But the deal was sealed when they did not only "Pierre" (their wonderful setting of the Maurice Sendak tale to music) but also Jacques Brel's "Amsterdam", that last during the first encore. Then for the second encore, they came out and did another song with Brian playing guitar and Amanda singing (I can't remember the name of it though), and then in response to a few requests shouted from the back of the room, actually did "War Pigs". Yes, the Black Sabbath song. Complete with a wonderful vintage DD extended piano-drums intro, and including several incredible drumming moments on Brian's part. He is truly one of the top three drummers I have ever seen, right up there with David Narcizio and Bill Bruford. If you are waffling on whether to spring the serious $$ required for a Lollapalooza ticket, I would recommend doing so just so you can see the Dresden Dolls. They put on one of the best live shows of anyone out there today, hands down. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jun 2004 17:24:45 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Anne Heaton, "Give In" Hi, Anne Heaton's brand-new CD just came in the mail. It's called _Give In_, and while it won't be officially released until September, she will be selling it at shows all summer. I've only listened to it once so far, but oh my god, this CD is *good*. I knew it was going to be good, because just hearing the songs performed live over the past year it was clear that Anne's songwriting has improved by leaps and bounds (and it was already quite good). My only worry was that the production wouldn't be up to the songs, but I needn't have wondered about that. Mike Denneen has brought to the songs exactly what they needed. Don't be confused by the fact that Anne Heaton is almost always filed under "folk" -- this is a pop record, through and through. I can already tell that this is going to be one of those discs that's perfect for summer driving with the windows down and the stereo cranked. More later once I've had a chance to absorb it more... but I just wanted to let everyone know that a new Ecto Essential (tm) is out there. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jun 2004 22:16:25 -0400 From: "dave" Subject: Re: french singers Jenny wrote: > Having lived in France for 4 years I know that the > French have a tendency to produce a vast quantity of "singers" who are > really just beautiful women with less than mediocre voices and sometimes > REALLY bad songs. I've been listening to a couple of French singers lately that I think are pretty good, Natasha St Pier, and Helene Segara. They both have nice voices, can't tell you if the lyrics are any good though.. don't understand more than a word or two.. but I like the sound. There are samples on www.amazon.fr I recommend Natasha's album "L'Instant d'apres" www.laurapausini.com also has a video of Laura and Helene Segara doing a duet, which is on Helene's album "Humaine" Also been listening to French singer Emma Shapplin, (although she mostly sings in Italian) I got her "Le Concert" CD which has a very Kate Bushish song in English at the end. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #169 ***************************
