I am participating in Clarion West's Shadow Write-a-thon. It runs the six weeks of this year's Clarion West Writer's Workshop, June 20 through July 30, and the funds raised go to support Clarion West, a nonprofit organization that sponsors the workshop, a reading series, etc. I have signed on to revise a chapter of my novel a week during those six weeks. Jim is sponsoring me for $25 a week (I think because he thinks I'll be so busy running the workshop that I won't be able to get it all done) and a couple of co-workers have signed on for $5 a week each. Would you be willing to help urge me on? Any support, no matter how small, is welcome. Please let me know if you're willing to add to the financial pressure to keep me writing. And if you can't, please still cheer me on. You can find out more information about the Write-a-thon and Clarion West at Clarion West's website http://clarionwest.org/website/cat_special_events.html and you can watch my weekly progress on the Clarion West forums http://clarionwest.org/forums in the Clarion West Lounge area. Why you might possibly want to sponsor me: * you like me * you don't like me & want me to suffer the pains of revision * you like Clarion West * you like reading (Clarion West has some damned impressive students & instructors) * if this novel ever gets published I'll thank you in the acknowledgements * you appreciate a good tax write-off (Clarion West is a 501(c)(3) and donations are tax deductible to the amount allowed by U.S. law, etc.). Anyway, wish me luck. Keller" Subject: theremin The correct name of the theremin player with Bela Fleck is Pamelia Kurstin; I know her because she plays with the New York cabaret/world music band Barbez (who I believe are on tour right now; check out their website). I've also seen her do a couple solo sets, where she layers theremin lines using delay pedals in a very Frippertronics manner. She's the best theremin player I've ever seen. (And though it's not that common an instrument, I have seen half a dozen or so players over the last few years.) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jun 2004 16:46:47 +0000 From: "Lyle Howard" Subject: Tim Eriksen Howdy, Had I known Tuesday night that Tim Eriksen's name had come up on this list, I would have bragged about seeing him at the Great High Mountain tour. I didn't mention him because I didn't think anyone would know who he is. I certainly didn't know him. Anyway, he was the leader of the Sacred Harp singers that performed Monday night at the Ft. Worth stop of the Great High Mountain tour. He was dressed in black, had a shaved head, was adorned with various forms of ear-jewelry, and was a bit on the manic side. He looked out of place amongst the middle class faces and fashions of the Sacred Harp singers. He was also the first person to welcome me and my friend as we walked into the backstage area of Bass Hall. Later his trio performed a set before the Bass Hall audience. According to an E-mail posted on the list in February, Tim helped organize the music for _Cold Mountain_ and was in Cordelia's Dad. A peek at his website reveals that he has an interesting bio. While on the subject, I have to complain about the Sacred Harp music used in _Cold Mountain_. In the midst of the accapella hymn sung Sacred Harp style, an orchestral accompaniment swelled to join the hymn. This occurred in the first battle sequence. Anyway, the whole point of Sacred Harp music is that no instruments are used. Much of the beauty of the style comes from the starkness of naked voices expressing pain and longing. That whole battle scene would have been much more effective had nothing but vocal music been used. Now read the above paragraph in Conan O'Brien's best nerd voice to get the full effect. And while I'm ranting, I will add that _Cold Mountain_ is the most depressing movie I have ever seen. I have been listening to _Anne Sofie Von Otter Meets Elvis Costello, For the Stars_ of late. It is a fine effort, but Ms. Von Otter is rather stiff as a pop vocalist. So take heart all you rockers, poppers, and folkies; you can have a world class operatic voice but that doesn't guarantee a great record. Your paltry voice may just fit the bill when it comes to great pop/rock/folk recordings. The arrangements on the cd are good, even great, and song choice is good. I especially like the two Beach Boys tunes and the Beatles tune. Benny and Bjorn of ABBA contribute a pretty song. Ms. Von Otter doesn't sound comfortable, though. Perhaps if she had added some vocal melisma or just had a couple of glasses of wine before the tape rolled, she would have done better. Elvis' vocal contributions sound strange, too. Perhaps he was restraining himself to blend better with Anne. Bye, Lyle ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jun 2004 10:03:03 -0700 From: "London, Sherry" Subject: FW: NEW RELEASE! Well, first of all, "Mark Gray" is actually me, "Mike Gray" and my Charlotte site is www.silverhoney.co.uk ;) - OK, cheap plug over. Charlotte once mentioned "Limits" as being "Running Up..." by Charlotte Martin. It wasn't her decision to make it the single (well, one of the singles, it's a two pronged attack involving Every Time It Rains, which people are going to compare to Cloudbusting) - just one of those things that happen when a record company get hold of a finished album! Char's a huge Kate Bush fan and the production on what I've heard of the record is very much influenced by Kate, especially the layering and background vocals. People compared Tori to Kate... I know Charlotte will take it as a compliment. It's going to be easy for people to make those comparisons, but please don't write her off as a Kate Bush wannabe - check out some of the recordings on www.archive.org especially the soundboards - stripped of the production it's very obvious that there's plenty of talent in the raw songwriting...
