I'll have to admit I only bought it because the French were making SUCH a big deal out of it. At first I resisted. Having lived in France for 4 years I know that the French have a tendency to produce a vast quantity of "singers" who are really just beautiful women with less than mediocre voices and sometimes REALLY bad songs. You all probably have heard of Vanessa Paradis who is married to Johnny Depp. She is considered a "singer" by French standards and frankly I just never got it. Carla isn't one of those women. Her album is very pleasant to listen to. So simple. Her voice too is very simple - kind of Bossa Nova style singing and yes, she is stunningly beautiful. My only problem with the album is that after a while it sounds like the same song over and over and I get a little bored with it. If I were to produce her I think I'd bring in a little variety of arrangement and rhythm (especially in her melodies which are all very similar). However, as far as I can tell she's the best thing to come from France, musically speaking, in a VERY long time. In a time of American Idol and HUGE belting and riffing voices it is refreshing to hear someone sing so plainly and simply. I would recommend having a listen to Carla Bruni : ) All the best, Jenny Jenny Bruce http://www.goodgirl.com - -- 2001 Billboard Songwriting Contest winner - 1st Place "New York-rooted pop-rock ingenue Jenny Bruce is building a cult following with her album "Soul On Fire" drawing comparisons to Annie Lennox and Shawn Colvin, among others." - BILLBOARD MAGAZINE "New York's Jenny Bruce has just released her second CD independently, but already she's had much success... Hers is an intelligent record full of pathos and gentle ironies; sort of like Paula Cole, but not nearly as whiny. This is Triple A as good as it gets, which means it's right on the verge of being pop." - Music Connection A lot of women picked up guitars to join the Lilith trend, but Bruce is the real thing." - Don Moorehouse, Springfield Union News ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jun 2004 15:29:24 -0500 From: kerrywhite@webtv.net (kerry white) Subject: Bela Fleck and the Flecktones Hi, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones were as good as I expected, having seen vid stuff of them in the past. What makes each time different from the rest is his guest stars. I saw a vid that included Cungar-ol, the Tuuvian throat singer. Last night there was a youngish blonde woman playing a Theremin. While the others had all the body Englishes of being 'into' the music, she had to be rock steady and only moved her hands a few inches at a time. Her name was Pamela Kursty. There was also a Japanese/Hawian Ukulele player named Jake Shimabukuro. The first time he played was a long solo with his getting the most amazing sounds including a heavy meatal guitar riff. The prog started a little after 8pm and went to 11:30pm with a 15 - 20 minute break at the hour and a half point. Due to an open bar the age limit of 21 was set. No teenagers but 'still' there were yellers and whoopers down on the seatless General Admission floor. On the way home my friend was stopped and he was surprised to hear his tags expired in March and he couldn't find any current proof of insurance. Since we were less than 2 blocks from his place the cop let us go, saying, "If you get caught again tonight they will arrest you and haul the car away." bye, KrW I'm Peter Pan! I heard Charlotte Martin "Limits of Our Love" the other day on WXPN's new music segment and the song had the exact same music as Running up that hill. Just wondered what some of the ecto people think. Don't get me wrong, Charlotte is a very good artist on her own. I also liked the cover she does of the Cure's "Just like heaven" I found this news piece on her: 14th March 2004: Newsbits: Charlotte Martin, who has covered This Woman's Work live, has recorded Cloudbusting during the sessions for her upcoming album and although it won't appear on the album it should make it onto an ep or single as an extra track. She has also played it live recently too on Jan 19th at the Hotel Cafe in LA. Read more here. (thanks Doug) Update: Mark Gray has given me this link to download Charlotte's studio rendition of Cloudbusting which she has made available to her fans, also there is a live version available here (thanks also to Mark for the pic of Charlotte with Kate vid, Mark's Charlotte site is here)... later, tom m. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jun 2004 22:30:39 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Great High Mountain Tour Hi, Lyle (congratulations on your 15 minutes of fame!) noted: >Ollabelle had an odd take on bluegrass. They sounded more like folkies >playing bluegrass. Ollabelle seems to be more about playing old-time Gospel music than bluegrass, so that might have something to do with it. Of particular ecto interest in Ollabelle is the fact that Jimi Zhivago, among many other things producer of Susan McKeown and the Chanting House's _Bones_ album is part of the band. And of more general interest is that their lead singer, Amy Helm is the daughter of Levon Helm. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #167 ***************************
