Subject: Thea live in London (again) It's a sad and sorry man who writes this -- the person who runs the Thea board took the names of people who were definitely going to be there, and then I forgot to check the board until the morning AFTER the gig, when I found that she'd arranged a meet-and-greet with Thea herself, post gig. And i missed it, even though I was on the list. AAAAAARRRRRRGGGHHHH! Okay, that out of the system -- Thea played an absolute shithole last week, the Islington Academy (or Carling Islington Academy,to give it its full corporate name). This is the venue that used to be the latest incarnation of the legendary Marquee Club, run by ex-Eurythmic Dave Stuart, who announced that he felt it was set in an area with all the atmosphere of the old Marquee in the 60's. Actually, it's set in a spanking new shopping mall, and I could be wrong but I doubt that 1960's Soho was exactly flush with The Gap and Borders, which may explain why the new Marquee went down the pan. Inside, it's a soulless, characterless box. You either stand at the front or at the back or at one of two bars, and that's your lot. My partner and I, wanting to both see and hear (silly us) chose the front, and as the doors opened at 7 we had to stand there for 2 sweltering hours, while the vents and pipes that ran all over the cieling proved to be purely aesthetic, and it became evident that the price of admission did not include oxygen. That said, Thea turned in another amazing performance, full of energy and charm. It wasn't quite the box of surprises and delights the Scala and Bush Hall gigs were, and the set list was perfunctory and missing several much-loved songs, but she never gave less than her all and, despite the heat, never wilted or gave the idea that she wasn't thoroughly enjoying herself. Opening act was a woman called Petra, who's a name to watch, but I suspect an acquired taste. she and a guitarist wove weird, moody, langourous soundscapes, and the closest comparison I could come to was Billy Holiday singing Lisa Germano. It's a crap comparison, but enough to say that, while I thought it was promising, I doubt I could listen to a whole album. Here's hoping I never have to go to the Islington Academy again, adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jun 2004 16:38:57 -0500 (CDT) From: mapravat@prairienet.org Subject: Anniversary Yesterday, June 13, was the 60th anniversary of the granting of a patent to Marvin Camras for the first magnetic sound recording device. They'll perform a few songs and do a signing afterwards. The performance will be broadcast on WFUV from noon to 2pm. They'll also be doing a benefit performance for "Housing Works" on Friday the 18th, also in NYC. There's more info about it on the Cowboy Junkies website . /nm {who is anxiously awaiting the arrival of her pre-ordered copy of _One Soul Now_} ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jun 2004 22:22:18 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Cowboy Junkies NYC appearance Hi, Nadyne scooped me: >For those of y'all in the NYC area, Michael and Margo Timmins of Cowboy >Junkies will be at J&R Music Hall in lower Manhattan on Thursday, 17 >June. I heard this announced on WFUV today, but didn't get to post it first. :) WFUV also streams online at . (Warning: the most annoying presenter in the history of radio, Darren DeVivo is hosting this event. He's beyond irritating and in general is a clueless moron, but once the Junkies start playing hopefully he won't be involved too much.) =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jun 2004 21:24:39 -0700 From: Greg Bossert Subject: Re: Cowboy Junkies NYC appearance On Jun 14, 2004, at 7:22 PM, meredith wrote: > I heard this announced on WFUV today, but didn't get to post it first. > :) heh, even though you posted 16 minutes after Nadyne, i actually got your message first. for what it's worth ;-) what do people think of "One Soul Now"? despite owning every other 'Junkies studio album, i haven't picked this up yet. alas, the days when i'd hit the CD stores with woj or Dave Steiner and buy dozens of CDs in a few hours are long gone -- i doubt i've bought a dozen CDs in the first six months of 2004...
