Some are actual instruments like toddler sized pianos and xylophones and drums. Others just make great sounds, like the pink zoo train or the eerie smud tuner or multi-sonic Activity Center. Still others are used for percussion, like the washboard, pots and pans and the jack-in-the-box. Each instrument is amplified individually with an intricate array of contact microphones and sound mixing techniques. This creates a sophisticated aural experience that is a far cry from a bunch of kiddies banging around. Toychestra performs original compositions as well as a few loosely related interpretations of songs by Perez Prado, Martin Denny, Dvorak, and more. The sounds range from stark to upbeat, from percussive to melodic, to ambient, avant-garde and kitsch. The band started when Paula Alexander was asked to form a band to play at a women's creative music festival at the Hotel Utah in SF, in 1996. She enlisted Lexa Walsh a nd Shari Robertson, who had worked with her in a performance group called Better Hose and Garters. "We planned to play regular instruments," says Shari, "We thought we could be a rock 'n' roll group." Lexa showed up at the first rehearsal with all these toys, and after jamming for a while, the toy tunes emerged as the clear favorites. Carrie Lin and Corey Weinstein joined the band along the way. Toychestra plays in a wide range of venues-whether its experimental music spaces, performance festivals, rock clubs, or winning first place at the 4th of July Parade in Alameda, California. They also perform at community centers, institutions, or jam in interactive programs with kids at Bay Area pre-schools, or German and Czech elementary schools. Their music is accessible and fun while maintaining its artistic integrity. As much as Toychestra is "high concept" experimental music, its execution is like an aural collage-- an assemblage of sounds and grooves and melodies that can enagag e almost anyone. np vegetable soup ;) [actually eesk - ghost taxi] - ----- Original Message ----- From: Sherlyn Koo Date: Wednesday, May 26, 2004 2:35 am Subject: Viennese Vegetable Orchestra > An orchestra which uses instruments made out of vegetables. > > Seriously. > > http://www.gemueseorchester.org/ > > -sherlyn > -- > Sherlyn Koo - sherlyn@pixelopolis.com - Sydney, Australia ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 May 2004 16:37:46 -0000 From: "neal copperman" Subject: The instant live recording battle begins Here's the start of the article... They're from nearby Muncie, so I see them here in Indianapolis fairly often. Rather reminiscent of my old faves "that dog", with unusual harmonies and lots of energy. They switch instruments onstage, too, giving additional variety to their performance. I'll be the first to say that they're still honing their performance skills, but every show seems to bring more maturity and confidence. Definitely good for a listen if you like that sort of music and presentation. If unsure, visit their website http://www.arcadetheband.com/ and grab a couple of MP3s. I had never heard of Katy Bowser before, but was impressed with her live show. Her voice has a slightly strange quality about it that I can't quite put my finger on. To hear her talk you would guess she is from Canada, but I believe she said she was from the south, though the state is escaping me. She did a solo, acoustic set. Her sound was very good. She had a very melodic sound, that at times sounded like a USO girl. I would probably compare her sound to that of Erin McKeown's. After the show I had a lovely conversation with her, and purchased both of her CDs. To be honest I am a little disappointed in the CDs, they just don't show the same talent and sound that her live performance did. Also, her lyrics just seemed to come across more true live. She just singed with a label and is working on a new CD which I will be anxious to hear! Overall, I would recommend her, especially live. Her CDs aren't bad, but they just aren't as wonderful as her live performance. Edie Carey put on another wonderful show! This was my second time seeing her live, and she did not disappoint once again. She played a lot of songs off her new CD "When I Was Made," but was pleasantly surprised, and happy to play requests for her older songs. I HIGHLY recommend seeing Edie if you get the chance. She puts on a fun and wonderful sounding show. I also HIGHLY recommend all of her CDs. Her newest release is very good, and shows a lot of growth, but her older CDs are well worth owning also! Michelle Malone's show was a disaster, but due to no fault of her own. A new sound guy at the venue somehow managed to turn off some of the monitors and some of the house speakers, making it nearly impossible for Michelle to hear herself, let along the audience. After two songs she said, she couldn't play with the current sound, because she couldn't hear herself, and left the stage so the sound guy could fix things. The idiot never got it right during her set. About 15 mins later Michelle took the stage again, and player about 4-5 more songs. Her music was great, despite the fact the set was so short. I hadn't seen Michelle before, though I have owned a few of her CDs since '98. I definitely recommend her music. She is a nice combination of folk, blues-rock, with a touch of southern rock. I defiantly want to see her in concert again, and I do recommend her to everyone! Oh also, I caught my first guitar pick at a concert, thanks to Michelle. Kind of funny how something so clichi can make you feel like such a kid again! Libby Kirkpatrick finish up the evening. Her show started out plagued with the same sound troubles that Michelle had. I finally had to yell to the sound guy that the house speakers were off, and he finally figured things out. I was not very familiar with Libby prior to the show. I had heard a couple of songs, and knew I would probably enjoy the show. What I ended up seeing was a bright, witty, smart, cute and funny personality that put on a great performance. Her latest CD "Goodnight Venus" is a great singer/songwriter disc! Overall, the shows were great. It was one of those concerts I left feeling really good because I had discovered new artists, and had new CDs I was excited to listen to! I would definitely recommend seeing and owning CDs of all the artists! The sounds are much what I expected - fun theatrical cabaret-ish punkish - but the album is also more catchy and emotional than I expected. Songs like 'Girl Anachronism' first grabbed me, burbling over with clever lyrics (yey, Edward Gorey reference!), and 'Coin-operated boy' is so catchy and hummable, but even that one drops the painted face-mask and goes with honesty in the bridge ("this bridge was written to make you feel smittener..."). Soon my favourites were "Half Jack", quiet through angry, and 'Bad Habit' (on the bouncy, chirpy side of Throwing Muses' 'Delicate Cutters' when it comes to self-mutilation songs, but, then, most things are). Anyone have the live album 'A is for accident'? (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/dresdendolls1). The cover image on their website is different. Karen __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? In this case there's Sam's scratchy acoustic guitar, carnivalesque percussion, some other guitars and strings - more than Fan Dance, but little enough variation, so that if you don't like one song, you won't like any, and if you do like one, you might feel 13 is too many. My fav songs are 'love changes everything' (sad & touching & v. much like Jane's song of that name) and 'red silk five' (reminds me of a classy spy movie). I'll listen to this album many times and enjoy it, but the messy clever do-these-songs-really-belong-on-the-same-album 'Omnipop (It's Only A Flesh Wound Lambchop)' is more my style. That one had loud guitars and perfect pop and sketchy sadness and was a mess but I prefer that to this sophisticated pared back approach, like Gillian Welch, Jolie Holland etc but a different genre. I wasn't impressed by an acoustic set of hers, but this is very enjoyable. 'Superhero' and a couple others do the catchy rock anthem thing perfectly, and there's love and heartbreak and pretty pop and delicate sadness and dirty gasoline and a worthwhile 'hidden' (bah, when will they quit with these things?) track which begins with "She says mom/ he is meant for me/ but she turns me on." Very much worth checking out. http://www.garrisonstarr.com/home.cfm I'm also listening to 'Van Lear Rose' by Loretta Lynn at the moment. She is a good songwriter, still a good singer, but it is sometimes a bit trad/twangy for me, and the coolness factor of some of Jack White Stripe's arrangements makes me uneasy. When the ditched wife brings her children, the bills and the family dog along for a showdown with "the woman that's burning down our family tree" and he who "was a good man until he ran into trash like you", it's difficult to keep a straight face. Her duet with Jack White is fun and sexy. Fortunately most people who won't be able to stand it will know that without having to listen first! Karen __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? For some reason I like the second half of this album, My Medea onwards, very much, and can barely listen to the first half! Love the more-than-mortal emotions of 'My Medea', what an incredible song, "for you I'd burn the length and breadth of sky." Then it swings to perfect pop with "Shasta", a tune catchy enough that I could still hum it a year after only hearing it once, but I'm very glad to have a recording to prop up the memory! And what a story-song, this and "Homecoming" surprised me, didn't realise Vienna would be so good at this as well as songs with less specifics about different lives. 'Anna Rose' is adorable and so pretty. 'Passage' is perhaps the only a capella song on a pop record that works as a song for me, they're usually stories or scraps of meditation that don't make it musically. Love 'the Atheist Christmas Carol', reminds me of that Eliza Gilkyson song where she goes "remember, I love you, I love you", sad and weary - this song is from an earlier, more hopeful stage in life. And the final track is a bit of magic. Karen __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Friends. Fun. Try the all-new Yahoo! It has been a while since something I wasn't expecting anything of took me by storm like this. I've already ordered my own copy of this and their first ep (which is in the $5 sale at CDBaby). This is bluesy downtempo electronica, or trip hop, or whatever you want to call it. Marilyn Carino has a deep, soulful voice, but there's a touch of Mary Margaret O'Hara's amazing slippery hesitancies in her approach to singing but she also nails notes, stretches them and lets them swell like any soul singer. And Ben Rubin makes a wonderful textural music with its own quirks and power behind that voice. It's a compelling and impressive mix. I was utterly fascinated by this from the moment the first sounds reached my ears and found myself staying up late listening to it even though I was desperately sleepy and hadn't intended to listen to the whole thing. Musically it's compelling (both the deep evocative vocals and the creative instrumentation and tunes) and the lyrics are unusually sophisticated and intriguing as well. Highly recommended listening. I've probably played it ten times already and it gets better with further listening. - --Neile - -- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham .... neile@sff.net/@drizzle.com ... www.sff.net/people/neile Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal ........ www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines Editor, The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ........... www.ectoguide.org Workshop Administrator, Clarion West ................ www.clarionwest.org ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #148 ***************************
