I find the interface a bit annoying though. Maybe it's because I'm running an older G3 mac with OS 9 but not only did the flash file run awfully slow, but it didn't allow for certain things, (once I zoomed in, I couldn9t zoom out for instance). Oh well. It's nice to see the maps done visually though. Being a graphic designer, I'm a sucker for information graphics. http://www.gnoosic.com/ is a pretty similar concept though I have found the names that are recommended rather hit or miss. I guess the more people use gnoosic, the "smarter" it gets. But I will say that I have NEVER liked the "explore similar artist" links in AMAZON.com. They usually pick the lowest common denominator and it's near impossible for me to find anything "new" or different on the list. Type in KATE BUSH and pretty much all that pops up are different KATE BUSH albums in the "explore similar artists." Other artists include PETER GABRIEL, early GENESIS and few others (like TALK TALK or SUZANNE VEGA). Yeah. Like any KATE BUSH wouldn't already know PETER GABRIEL's work.... The "recommended" artists that they list are almost always "big name" artists, not lesser known ones (why not recommend, oh I dunno, HAPPY RHODES?). Talk about shooting themselves in the foot. If only AMAZON would actually list lesser known artists, not only would they be helping out those artist, but they would probably be driving up sales for AMAZON. I mean if you already own one KATE BUSH album, wouldn't you also own the rest of her stuff? And wouldn't you probably also already own most of PETER GABRIEL's stuff - or at least have heard enough of his stuff that you would either own it or not want it? If AMAZON would recommend lesser known artists though, they would probably increase their sales, because those artist wouldn't be as likely to be in someone's collection Bah. Whatever. I know it has a lot to do with what customers buy and what they recommend but still. I would make the opposite assumption: if someone is going to Amazon to purchase 'The Red Shoes', they're not a Kate fan -- they're new to her music. Thus, unless Amazon knows that they already own 'So' (either because the user purchased it at Amazon, or the user has told Amazon that they already own it), they can't assume that the user is already aware of Peter Gabriel in any meaningful way. I've noticed that, as I enter more information into Amazon (either from my own purchases or telling them that I like/don't like something), their recommendations are improving. I can't blame them for starting off with (what you refer to as) the lowest common denominator. /nm ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 May 2004 13:27:41 -0700 (PDT) From: "Scott Andrew LePera" Subject: Re: Musicplasma Also part of the issue is that Amazon (the website) really has no idea that someone who likes Kate Bush might also like Happy Rhodes. Amazon makes its automated recommendations based on: - - who bought what - - what else they bought - - customer-supplied ratings - - sales rank (top sellers tend to bubble up) Amazon doesn't have the perception of genres or similar-sounding artists so there's no way to associate Kate with Happy. CD Baby does a great job of this, asking each artist "who do you sound like?" so their search engine can find similar-sounding artists. - -- Scott - -- Scott Andrew and the Walkingbirds lo-fi DIY acoustic pop http://www.scottandrew.com/main/music scott@scottandrew.com Nadyne Mielke said: > I would make the opposite assumption: if someone is going to Amazon to > purchase 'The Red Shoes', they're not a Kate fan -- they're new to her > music.
