It's good, I like it better than her last one. Not amazing though, I tend to find her stuff really nice but tending to sound the same. The more I listen to this the more I am liking it though. So if you like her, it's a good one. If you don't like her, this probably won't change anything. I am partial to this album because the title track (Between Here and Gone) is a song inspired by the death of Dave Carter, or more specifically by the words that Tracy Grammer wrote to fans two days after Dave died. Tracy told me that Chapin asked her if she would mind if she used those words for her album title. She of course did not mind. This is the original context: "There was a look of wonder in his eyes, and though I cried and tried to deny it to him, I knew he was right and he was on his way. He stayed with me a minute more but despite my attempts to keep him with me, I could see he was already riding that thin chiffon wave between here and gone. He loved beauty, he was hopelessly drawn to the magic and the light in all things. I figure he saw something he could not resist out of the corner of his eye and flew into it." - -Jess PS Anyone ever heard of the trio Maggi, Pierce and EJ? I got a CD from them for radio play, and its quite good. >Hey folks, > >I note that Sam Phillips has a new album (A Boot and a Shoe) out. > >And, has anybody heard the new Mary Chapin Carpenter? > >- -sherlyn >- -- >Sherlyn Koo - sherlyn@pixelopolis.com - Sydney, Australia ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 May 2004 23:52:25 -0700 From: irvin lin Subject: PJ HARVEY > From: karen hester > 'Uh Huh Her' is due out 31 May in the UK, and the single 'The Letter' is > due 17 May. Has anyone heard anything or know anything? Her web presence > is dreadful, or rather, limited, which is good for mystique, but sucky for > info. Well if you check her "official" website www.pjharvey.net you can view the video to THE LETTER as well get a track list of the songs for her new album as well as a picture of the cover of the new album. Just as an FYI, the website is all FLASH. I know some of you aren't FLASH compatible.... For non FLASH you can check out www.pj-harvey.net which looks like it might be a pretty decent site as well, but it's all in FRENCH. I don't speak french. For an English site check out www.pollyharvey.co.uk, which seems updated fairly regularly, though I don't think it has anything that the "official" site doesn't have. But I haven't really explored it more. There's no flash that I could see, but it does utilize frames. I hate frames. Okay hate is strong word. I mildly dislike frames. She's apparently performed back in SEPTEMBER at the TATE MODERN (first rock concert there ever) which sounds cool in theory, but I can't imagine the acoustics being all that good in that big echoey chamber. Maybe when it's filled with people they'll help to absorb some of the echo. I dunno. Did anyone ECTOBRITS go? Apparently she performed some songs from her upcoming album there. Anyway from what I could tell, her new song THE LETTER pretty much sounds like all her other songs. I'll probably wait until I can find it used cheap. Subject: PJ Harvey's new one I've streamed the video for the single, "The Letter", and this was how I got to hear it. Have to say, though (IMHO), I'd forgotten it as soon as it ended -- sounds like an offcut from anything else she's done over the last few years. adam k, abandoning his plans to see Eliza Gilkyson in London tonight due to lack of funds. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 May 2004 10:15:59 EDT From: RedWoodenBeads@aol.com Subject: joe and ellen CD released Hey ectos. When I was at the Tate Modern, there was a temporary exhibit consisting of a sculpture that took up the entire turbine room. It was really mindboggling. Essentially, it was 3 giant funnels all connected by tubes. Keep in mind that this is several stories high and several football fields long. The idea of PJ Harvey standing at one opening and the audience listening at the other two openings is really an amusing one for me. I didn't actually realize the sculpture wasn't permanent. You can't really put it anywhere else. It's way to big to be photographed in one piece. You can see a sketch that shows you what I probably failed to describe here: http://www.exporevue.com/magazine/fr/anishkapoor_mu.html And a few pictures of pieces of the sculpture here: http://www.unileverseries.com/kapoor/sculpture.html http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/exhibitions/kapoor/ neal ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 May 2004 14:24:54 -0700 From: Nadyne Mielke Subject: new Cowboy Junkies album and tour I didn't see this mentioned here yet. Or it was mentioned, and I just forgot. :) The Cowboy Junkies are about to release their next album, "One Soul Now". It's due out on 08 June in North America, 31 May in Europe, and 28 May in Japan. If you pre-order on their website (which has been entirely redone), you get a limited-edition EP of some cover songs, including a haunting version of 'Lungs' (original song by Townes Van Zandt). They've also made a CD-ROM about the making of the album. They're also headed out on a tour starting with some European dates in early June, and wrapping up on the West Coast of the US in August. /nm ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #134 ***************************
