Is > there anything worth reporting in a way of new material heading our > way or something?? As a matter of fact, yes - Margot was down in Melbourne late last year recording her third album, which I'd expect we'll see fairly soon; I'll find out more detailed info and report back :) By the way, I still have quite a few copies of "Sleeping With The Lion" here (which I rescued from a record store clear-out bin some time ago; the album is long deleted and in fact had its 10th anniversary last November!) if anyone's been searching for a copy. As for My Friend The Chocolate Cake, they just releaed a best-of album which would make a good introduction to them for those who don't know where to start. Agreed with Heidi that David Bridie's solo albums are well worth checking out; those who despise copy protection should be aware that last year's "Hotel Radio" is (weakly) protected by "Cactus Data Shield", something that infuriated Bridie to the point where he actually offered to burn an unprotected copy of the album for those who complained. Amusingly, though the copy protection was supposed to stop spread of the album on file-sharing networks, EMI cheerfully handed out unprotected CD-R advance copies to media and anyone else interested... :-) There is also a Super Audio CD (SACD) version of his first solo album "Act Of Free Choice" available, originating from the UK and containing a CD layer with the UK version of the album, and a SACD layer with the 5.1 surround mixes of it that were done for a planned DVD release but ultimately not used. The SACD can be ordered from David's management for AUS$25, ironically cheaper than the conventional CD version :) Wendy Rule's CDs are indeed widely available here: in Melbourne, JB HiFi stores always seem to keep stock of every album. The singles/EPs are no longer available but will reappear online soon. Wendy's latest album is last year's "The Lotus Eaters", not yet listed in the Ectophile's Guide but superb nonetheless :) There are full-song downloads from the album at www.mp3.com.au/wendyrule for those who want to listen. Later this year Sequoia will release an album Wendy recorded in San Diego with Gary Stadler (an interesting meeting of two very different artists!), while there's also the strong likelihood of a live jazz album from Wendy (recorded last year at Bennett's Lane) and of course another proper solo album is in the writing stages. Brunatex released an album which should be around if you search; Polyester Records in Brunswick Street, Fitzroy in Melbourne should have it (along with a lot of other hard-to-find Australian stuff; they specialise in it). If Cactus Child's last album is hard to find in stores, that's because Universal dumped all their stock of it onto a "warehosue sale" company that runs the occasional "Massive CD and book sale" at Melbourne's Exhibition Centre. At the recent one they did, copies of the album - lots of them - could be had for a mere $2 apiece...! And adding to Jenny's list, let me suggest a couple of other Australian things worth checking out; both should be easily available. Jess McAvoy - new album "En Masse" is terrific, kind of an Ani/Tori melding but with plenty of unique character. The mastering is fairly, err, extreme (!!) but that doesn't stop the album being hugely enjoyable. http://www.jessmcavoy.com/ for an MP3 :) Clare Bowditch - her first solo album "Autumn Bone" is remarkable, and sounds like absolutely nothing else around. Very acoustic, but with an almost "vintage" sound in places, french horns and all. Very highly recommended; it's one of those rare Ecto-friendly albums that gets mass plaudits from the music media and results in constantly sold-out live shows. http://www.clarebowditch.com for some small snippets of an earlier release, with samples from the album apparently coming. - - Anthony ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 May 2004 06:16:38 -0400 From: breinheimer@webtv.net (bill) Subject: Re: true confessions So, Meredith, does the title of your post refer to your Curse of Blondie obsession or your revealing your age? If it helps I was in college when I picked up their first two lp's; so I do have a few years on you. :) Anyway, I'm glad to hear that they are back with product that is genuinely praiseworthy. I wouldn't worry much about Debbie Harry's apparent "work". Even their first two lp's are more pop than punk and by the time Parallel Lines broke them here in the states those sensibilities had pretty much well disappeared. Anyway she is even older than me (I believe that she is pushing sixty) and her appearance has always been a focal point of the group's performance. One caveat about seeing them live. The one time I saw them several years ago, Debbie was so wasted she couldn't even carry a tune. It was like something right out of Behind the Music. Fortunately, Echo and the Bunnymen put on a terrific show so the day wasn't a complete waste. Here's hoping that she has put those demons behind her. np: Blondie- Plastic Letters ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 May 2004 11:40:28 -0400 From: Jason Gordon Subject: beware - eastern european ews... Just adjusting back to the eastern time zone digging through the pile of discs from prague...interesting how the local czech releases were $7-12 and the imports were $20-25. good thing I didnt need to purchase the britney spears album... oh, I also came across a web store called: http://www.tamizdat.org/ that has reasonable prices and a huge selection of czech and other eastern european releases...in english also which makes navigating a little easier than the few czech sites i had been on trying to track down iva bittova's stuff. There are sound samples as well for almost all artists which is convenient as well :) About half of the below list can be found there...but almost all of the essential type stuff is there (I asterisked it if it is online there). Highlights of czechtto music: * The Ecstasy of Saint Theresa - slowthinking and in dust 3 - wild, wonderful, eclectic, marvelous....essential stuff! * Tara Fuki - Kapka and Piosenki Do Snu - any fan of jorane's first album needs to run to the web and order this...wow. Triny (http://www.triny.cz/) - a bit of gypsy music with wonderful harmonies and instrumentation - not available on the tamizdat site, but soundclips can be found at the aforementioned site... * Roe Deer - Aquaparty (everforever isnt bad either, but not as good as aquaparty imho) Lenka Dusilova - Spatrit Svetlo Sveta * Veneer - Light * Iva Bittova - Nederlands Blazers Ensemble Dance of the Vampires, Divna Slecinka, and Kolednice - picked up the 3 albums I didnt haveof hers that I saw - luckily didnt buy something I already owned for once ;) [fyi - the total iva bittova albums they have include: Bittova, Iva Ne Nehledej Bittova, Iva Kolednice Bittova, Iva Divna Slecinka Bittova, Iva j.h. / As Their Guest Bittova, Iva & Cikori Bittova, Iva & Cikori Bittova, Iva & Dorothea Kellerova Bela Bartok - 44 Duets for Two Violins Bittova, Iva & Nederlands Blazers Ensemble Ples Upiru / Dance of the Vampires Bittova, Iva / Vclavek Bl Inferno (double CD)] November 2nd - Midnight Desert Chill on the Sun - U Babky Skyline - Urbanica and then in browsing the tamizdat website I also came across the following of interest (that are now on their way to me...damn ews) Sina & Martin Burlas: Master a Margareta (Slnko Records, 2001) Toychestra: Sassy Pony (S.K. True. And she did spend some time in Hollywood, so I suppose I shouldn't have been as surprised as I was. >One caveat about seeing them live. The one time I saw them several years >ago, Debbie was so wasted she couldn't even carry a tune. It was like >something right out of Behind the Music. Well, granted I've only seen the band on television appearances, but assuming those are representative of how the band generally is I'd say she's very well-behaved this time around. Though I'll bet she's wishing she was wasted during the A&E thing. I'm sure that would've made dealing with the utterly vapid Jules Asner much easier. :P =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 May 2004 21:56:03 -0400 From: Michael Curry Subject: Cranes news (new album and European tour) >From: "Cranes / Dadaphonic" >To: >Subject: Cranes / Dadaphonic Newsletter May 2004 >Date: Sat, 8 May 2004 02:42:54 -0400 > >Cranes / Dadaphonic Newsletter May 2004 > >'Particles and Waves' now Available > >We are very happy to announce the release of the new cranes album >"Particles and Waves" !
