Ooh. Is there a new MUM? Strange, AMAZON doesn't have it listed. I wanted to know when it was to be released... Well I have to admit that their second album (the only one I have) was a bit of a mixed bag. The first half of the album was quite hauntingly beautiful and dreamy. But the second half of the album devolved into ambient droning loops that left me rather bored. That said, I have friends that LOVE LOVE LOVE the album and positively DROOL when you mention the name MUM. They have gotten a lot of comparisons to SIGUR ROS, BOARDS OF CANADA and BJORK (though in truth I think ANY music out of ICELAND gets compared to BJORK because she's the most famous ICELANDIC artist out there) and COCTEAU TWINS (with the singers sort of haunting childlike singing) though I would probably compare her singing to early CRANES than COCTEAU TWIN's LIZ FRASER. I do recommend the MUM album that I have called FINALLY WE ARE NO ONE for those out there that like dreamy electronica with glitches and drones. It's not as quite as repetitive as BOARDS OF CANADA (though they are probably the closest in comparison), but they do occasionally verge on little songettes that aren't quite fully fleshed out songs, but rather, just little sound bites of chimes and other noises that invoke childhood and toys. Apparently the band was greatly influenced by an album by RAYMOND SCOTT's called SOOTHING SOUNDS FOR BABY which has very childlike rhythms and music. I am not familiar with that album, but I can certainly hear the description being applied to this album - though I hear their debut album (which I don't have) is even MORE childlike sound bites, and even LESS song structured. One of the reasons I have never tracked it down. Fans of glitchy electronica (NOTWIST, DNTEL, CONSOLE) and haunting ambient soundscapes (COCTEAU TWINS, SIGUR ROS, BOARDS OF CANADA, CRANES, SLOWDIVE) should definitely check out MUM. I believe they fall into the silly musical category of IDM (INTELLIGENT DANCE MUSIC), a label I think is ridiculous. You can't dance to half the stuff that is labelled IDM nor would anyone want to. But whatever, that's just my own issues I guess. Heh. Oh and a bit of trivia, the twins that are in MUM were the twins that were on the cover of BELLE AND SEBASTIAN's FOLD YOU HANDS CHILD, YOU WALK LIKE A PEASANT. You can drop that reference next time you're at a hipster party, and everyone will think you're the shizzle. All I can tell you is what shows up on the radio station music library web site, which says the album is SUMMER MAKE GOOD and that is is on the Pias America label. They have the album that Irvin recommends, as well as another one thst is just self-titled from 2000. Stephanie Winters should be a familiar name to many ectophiles. She was one-half of The Nudes, who opened for Happy at the Bottom Line many years ago (and not long after that, they opened for Susan McKeown and the Chanting House). She has been in Dar Williams' band, and for the past couple years has been in Rachael Sage's band. (Her complete credits go on much longer, but those are the ones of particular ecto interest...) She's finally put out a solo cd, called _Through The Storm_. CD Baby has it, at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/stephaniewinters. (Apparently the folks at CD Baby like it so much, they're going to feature it on the front page next week.) I'm listening to the samples right now, and it's wonderful. Anyone who likes evocative cello music (think a slightly more New Agey Jorane, and I mean that in the most positive way possible) is going to love this. Stephanie is one of the most amazing musicians out there, and she's an incredibly sweet person to boot. She deserves to have a lot of success with this record. (It's been a good cello day, actually ... after much too much dawdling I finally got Jorane's _16mm_ and her Live record, and I listened to them over and over all day at work. The perfect soundtrack to an icky, grey, rainy day.) =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #125 ***************************
