And that's all I have to say about that. I saw Sam Phillips again Tuesday night, this time at Largo. She did a three-night stint there, will do a few more dates in the next month around L.A., and then will be off on a small tour up to San Francisco and Seattle, then Chicago, then the East Coast in June. Her new album came out this week on Nonesuch. I so very highly recommend the new songs. The full tour dates and samples of the songs are at the nonesuch label website. Oh, and I saw Rachael Yamagata a few weeks ago at the Hotel Cafe (i love that place!). The set was a bit bland, but the EP (a precursor to the album out in June) is pretty good. It was produced by Malcolm Burn, and the songs and sounds bring to mind Fiona Apple, Heather Nova, Bjork, and Leona Naess. umm...yeah. Subject: Topley-Bird She used to be Tricky's partner/co-singer. That's her you hear on a lot of "Maxinquaye". I don't know what she's been doing in between but, given the coverage of her album, I should. The album has a weird critical history. Radio stations started trailing the single for weeks before it was released, the album was hyped, she did some low-key gigs to promote it (including Bush Hall in London) and then, when it came out, the reviews I read were decidedly mixed. That didn't stop it from being nominated for an award (I think it was the Mercury Prize) and suddenly all the critics changed their minds and unanimously fell in love with her again. adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Apr 2004 05:05:39 -0400 From: gordodo@optonline.net Subject: electrelane last night in london Just went to see electrelane last ngiht in London...they would fit comfortably between the dresden dolls and my bloody valentine on anyone's cd rack. The show was as sonically loud as any I have ever been to but still incredibly melodic, beautiful songs, some of the fastest guitar playing I have seen, as well as an incredible variety of sounds made from the band (without the assistance of excessive pedals and other wahwah inducing devices). Even the 10000 Maniacs cover (which was totally unexpected) was incredible. I picked up their first albumas well although I havent listened to it yet - but their recent album "The Power Out" has US distribution (i have seen copies in newberry comics so I know it is released domestically). She also said she would then tour North America to promote the album. She also talked a little about the project of a DVD which is still not anything really confirmed but let's say they're trying to do it. _________________________________________________________________ MSN Search, le moteur de recherche qui pense comme vous ! http://fr.ca.search.msn.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Apr 2004 11:12:11 -0400 From: fingerpuppets Subject: Re: electrelane last night in london one time at band camp, gordodo@optonline.net (gordodo@optonline.net) said: >Just went to see electrelane last ngiht in London...they would fit >comfortably between the dresden dolls and my bloody valentine on >anyone's cd rack. and perhaps stereolab too. not sure i see the dresden dolls comparison but maybe there is a visual aspect to their performance which i don't know about. >I picked up their first albumas well although I havent listened to it >yet - but their recent album "The Power Out" has US distribution (i >have seen copies in newberry comics so I know it is released >domestically). _the power out_ is on too pure, in whose stable the band fits rather well for those who are familiar with other too pure bands. they're sort of an electropunk outfit with a very strong rhythm-based sound. i picked up a copy the other day and rather like it...though i think i prefer their bbc sessions which prompted me to buy the record for their rawer sound (and not just because they covered roxy music's "more than this"). that's not to say _the power out_ is slick or over-produced but the edges have definitely been rubbed off the corners. still, there are some really good tracks on _the power out_: "this deed" is lovely with some great piano work and "only one thing is needed", a zippy tune with skronky sax, is also quite nice. woj ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Apr 2004 10:45:16 -0700 (PDT) From: Craig Gidney Subject: Plink, "The Sleeping Lines" This Washington, DC based band specializes in the moody electronic soundscapes favored by Alpha or Massive Attack. The chanteuese has a classically-trained voice that soars over mellow, midtempo chillout music that occassionally breaks out with harder beats and harsher sounds. Some tracks--particularly the spoken-word tracks--aren't up to the usually standard of the sung pieces. (They're going for a Laurie Anderson vibe, not so successfully). Still, this is a strong debut. I was just lured to the eMusic site by an article I saw in todays paper. It looks pretty appealing. Anyone out there been using it? The article was about eMusic Live. The site allows you to download songs and full albums, but what really drew me there was the lure of live recordings. They have just introduced a new kiosk at Maxwell's in Hoboken for purchasing live recordings of that night's show. Recordings are in mp3 form and cost $10. You buy a $20 reusable key-chain hard drive and download the show at the end of the evening. I gather there are a lot of shows available for download too. It's a bit hard to find what live recordings are available without subscribing (as far as I could tell), but I did see Elysian Fields Tuesday show in NYC available. I'd much rather do that then record and edit my own shows! Of course, I mostly like to listen to live shows I was at, and I don't think they have much of a presence in New Mexico! neal ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Apr 2004 14:23:25 -0400 From: fingerpuppets Subject: Re: eMusic? one time at band camp, neal copperman (neal@swcp.com) said: >I was just lured to the eMusic site by an article I saw in todays paper. Of course, I >mostly like to listen to live shows I was at, and I don't think they have >much of a presence in New Mexico! no, but they do have shows from a lot of venues across the states such as maxwell's, schuba's and the double door in chicago, mccabe's in santa monica, the cat's cradle in carrboro and the 9:30 in washington. i don't see this as a replacement for recording live shows myself but this is a nice complement for it! the only issue right now seems to be that not all shows are available this way. woj n.p. gemma hayes -- night on my side ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Apr 2004 19:09:07 +0000 From: iflin@speakeasy.net Subject: martina topley bird > Date: Thu, 29 Apr 2004 21:37:47 -0700 > From: "London, Sherry" > I just received two CDs from the UK today..Sia and Martina Topley-Bird. TRICKY, of course, has helped out on her album, along with a bunch of other people (including TCHAD BLAKE). i can't remember what i've heard from her album, but it's a mixed bag of styles. what i did hear, i felt was quite powerful, but a bit uneven. a bit of STINA NORDENSTAM hauntingness and PJ HARVEY strength and LISA GERMANO's vulnerability. that said i adore her song NEED ONE. great song. you can find out more about here at www.martinatopleybird.com irvin (who is pleased that all the outlook viruses don't seem to effect the MAC entourage program...) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Apr 2004 21:16:36 -0000 From: "neal copperman" Subject: Re: eMusic? fingerpuppets said: > the label for live recordings is "emusic live" so doing a label search > for that will turn up all the live stuff they have. it's organized by > venue so it makes it somewhat easy to find what there is. not sure if > you can do that search without subscribing or setting up a free trial > though. I saw an eMusic sponsored show at Maxwells this past Sunday, the pretty much non-ecto but always spectacular gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello. Ten minutes after the show was finished I bought a double-CD set of the performance for $15, a great soundboard feed with audience response well mixed in. No fumbling with my recorder, trying to hide mics or worrying about flubbing it (which happens more often than I'd like to admit), and my momento supported the band for a change. Wow. At that price, I'd leave my recorder at home and buy the discs every time. Best piece of merchandise any artist could offer at a show, although I'm sure the price will start rising soon enough.
