Well, the good news is that after taking some time out they are back to making music, with second album in the works and a couple of performances around Australia. They will be at the Hopetoun on the 4th of May. I've been so bad when it comes to seeing live music I don't make any promises any more, but if anyone can drag me out of the house after dark, it would be Angie... even though I still haven't quite forgiven her for marrying Jesse :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Apr 2004 22:36:18 -0400 From: aural gratification Subject: Barney Parker Hey Ectos Hope y'all are doing well and having a glorious Spring. I've been meaning to post this news for a week or so, but just haven't been up for much lately. As we're coming up on May 2nd and the Ecto birthday greetings always give a nod to Barney Parker, I thought I should mention that we lost the dear boy on April 15th. He would've been 18, which as you know is ancient for a feline. His little liver decided that 18 years was pushin it and began to fail rapidly. He was very weak towards the end, but they say he wasn't in any great pain. I take great comfort in knowing that he's full of energy and unencumbered by any physical limitations right now as he's zipping around the cosmos auditioning kitten bodies. So maybe on the 2nd you can light a candle for him and spoil the shit out of your beloved four legger. Thanks for listing him year after year. I miss him so much, but am thankful that he let me love him and be part of his life. Steve is doing enough MS bashing that I don't feel the need to dogpile, but another very significant difference between the Windows OSs and (most of the) non-Windows OSs is that there's an extremely active community of folks identifying and responding to security issues ***with peer review***. That is, changes to the Unix OSs are typically openly discussed prior to implementation, with debate about the degree to which a proposed change will address the problem and an assessment of the risk for new problems. In constrast, Microsoft autocratically releases patches which may (or may not) effectively close a given security hole without creating a new one. (But I can't quite discuss M$ though without stating my opinion everybody should learn about the threats posed by TCPA and NGSCB (formerly known as Palladium), and then boycott any products implement or supporting those protocols) On another note entirely, I'd like to extend my most sincere condolences to Kevin. - -- d. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Apr 2004 17:58:05 -0700 From: Daniel Subject: Re: Barney Parker KB wrote: > As we're coming up on May 2nd and the Ecto birthday greetings always give a > nod to Barney Parker, I thought I should mention that we lost the dear boy > on April 15th. Not true about how the Eudora ads work. Those ads come from Eudora itself and are stored in the Eudora Stuff on your hard drive. Unless you actually click on them, no information is passed to the advertiser about where you saw the ad. Eudora really is the best alternative for Windowsers because it lacks the security holes of Outlook, specifically the auto-launching of exe files (off by default) and copying of the address book and autoforwarding of messages (not possible in Eudora). The Web Bug problem is in Eudora, but if you turn off Show HTML Graphics In Messages (Mac and Windows both) then that security hole is closed, whether or not you use previews, which can also be turned off. (They are on by default, as is show html.) Even Netscape and Mozilla's weak email client is more secure than Outlook. The standard answer is, regardless of your OS, the fewer Microsoft products you use, the better off you are.
