Thanks for the heads up on Carina opening for Snow Patrol, Sherry. Even before finding that out, my cousin Matt made reservations for tickets at the Troubadour in L.A. for Snow Patrol last week. They've been getting some play on KCRW, and he bought their cd and played it for me. Really good stuff. Now that I know that Carina's on the bill too, I'm quite excited. Next week, Sam Phillips is doing 3 days at Largo, The Like is at the Troubadour on Friday, and Susan Werner is at McCabe's on Saturday. Quite a full slate. ****** The last I heard, Bic was living in Paris for a while, so it's nice to see that she's touring again. My cousin Matt (he makes another appearance in the post!) was in New Zealand for all of January and, knowing that I'm a big Bic fan, he picked up the live Bic Runga with the Christchurch Symphony album that's only available there for me. It gets a bit schmaltzy with the big orchestral arrangements (sorta 70's bacharachian), but it's still good and she does some songs that you can't find on her albums. ****** One more mention of my cousin Matt. He accompanied me to the Jonatha Brooke show a few weeks ago at the Knitting Factory in Hollywood. That was possibly the best sounding concert I've ever attended. The band was extremely tight, and the new backup singer she has (who also plays keys, clarinet, and guitar) blended seemlessly with Jonatha (even more so than Ingrid used to, I'd say). Her new album still hasn't fully ingratiated itself with me, but I liked the songs she did live. The BBR was a much less lush, more funky version of the Pike/Sutton collaboration. Quite wonderful live, but less interesting on record - -- much like Sister 7, now that I reflect on it. :-) >Amusingly enough, I had never heard of Patrice or Sister 7 until a month or >so ago. Still sorting it out. I love Patrice and Wayne dearly, but the BBR collaboration's CD didn't quite work for me. No one has yet captured their magic on a studio recording, and I think the live dynamic brought out something ineffable in their performances. Every S7/BBR show was a treat that even my live tapes fall short of reproducing... - -- | Greg Dunn | | | gregdunn@indy.net | "Talking about music is like | | The Sultan of Slack(tm) | dancing about architecture." | | http://www.indy.net/~gregdunn/ | Frank Zappa | ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Apr 2004 03:00:04 -0400 (EDT) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friend... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ******************* Christine Waite (no Email address) ******************** *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Christine Waite Tue April 25 1972 Taurus Matt Adams Thu April 26 1962 Taurus Brad Hutchinson Tue April 28 1964 What sign? I'm sure they sent us the CD in hopes that we would present Patrice. The CD is somewhat intriguing, but not compelling. I think I'd like to see her live myself to get a sense of that magic, but it's good to hear someone else talk about it. neal np: Sloan Wainwright - Sloan Wainwright (Going to see Sloan tomorrow in Santa Fe as a preview for our house concert on Wednesday. I bought the CD's to help support Patrice, but I saw her LIVE because I loved her, as S7 and BBR, and I recorded their live shows (she permits live recording) so I listened to that, some of my favorite recordings... they were simply amazing live. Several local musicians opened for her, their first time opening, and to a musician they said they had never before seen such a stage charisma as Patrice. I hope the 2-CD release from Patrice is successful, it has an acoustic portion recorded in California to a sell out crowd, I do not know where the electric portions were recorded, but I suspect Texas.
