I sent an email about Blind at Starry Plough in Berkeley (last night and it was great) and never saw it posted. Maybe something is weird between our servers? I also have a terrific gig tonight, Saturday, I also sent info in on this one too but also didn't see it posted. But I have been so busy with three bands lately (Blind, Druid Sisters Tea Party and Azigza again!) that I may have missed it. Anyone see any of these posts? Anyway, probably too late for this one but it's so cool, anyone in the SF area that loves world or prog or stars and planets should come to this. Cyoakha Grace & Azigza, CD release- concert & star show @ the Chabot Space Center, Saturday April 24th 8pm Many of you Land of the Blind fans also know of my work with AZIGZA, critically aclaimed Symphonic-World-Fusion-Progressive-Rock band. I was with them for 4 years and now that their second CD is being released, with 3 songs of mine on it, I've agreed to come back to celebrate this amazing CD- "KRIYA". I am so very very proud of this album, it's one of the most beautiful I have ever heard, nothing to do with me being on it or not, this one is something to be proud of! It's a piece of art, from prog to Indian to Bulgarian to African. AZIGZA performs the pieces from KRIYA in a combo musical-visual show called Axis Mundi at the totally amazing CHABOT SPACE CENTER in the Oakland Hills on Saturday, April 22 at 8pm. Besides the Planetarium star show, an amazing artist from Morocco, Nouzha, is showing her art slides of planetary paintings (and the band is playing in the dark, weee), it all should be really beautiful visually as well as musically. This is a monsterous line up- joining Kevin Evens on guitar, Pierce McDowell on fretless bass, Aryeh Frankfurter on violin and guitar, Stephen Junca on drums and me, Cyoakha Grace & Mohammad (MC Rai) on shared vocals, are John Waller on tablas, percussion, Linton Hale, percussion and Bonsuri flute, and Aidan McIntyre on giant gongs. Tickets are $12-$15. Advanced sales available at Chabot Box Office (510) 336-7373 10000 Skyline Blvd. Oakland http://www.chabotspace.org AZIGZA "an intoxicating blend of world music and prog-rock that manages to sound both fresh and timeless" Marin Scope "Hypnotic and spellbinding" Expose Magazine "deservedly one of the most acclaimed bands" Ground and Sky "easily the most successful fusion of western rock music and eastern world music" Progweed ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Apr 2004 12:00:08 +0100 From: "Adam K." Subject: snow patrol Hmmm....yes, in fact I have, but mainly from tv ads, and I've been quite intrigued. Apparently, they'd been going for some time, one of those paying-their-dues, being dismissed as another Coldplay/Travis clone and then somehow striking the right person in the right way in the right time in the the right place and...bam. Their album started selling. What I've heard I've liked, and has almost prompted me to buy the album (similarly, by the way, the debut by a group called Delays, which I heard being played instore and which I really liked). Alas, finances and a glut of ecto priorities have dictated otherwise. adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Apr 2004 13:37:45 +0200 (CEST) From: "Sander" Subject: Bic Runga in Auckland I can't remember the last time I became enamored of an artist this quickly. Actually, I think I can remember - it's _never_ happened quite this swiftly. Two days ago, Bic Runga was one of the names of Kiwi artists that I knew as potentially interesting to look out for (thanks to Robert Davy for the initial recommendation), but that was as far as it went. Yesterday I noticed a new version of one of her cd's in the cd stores here, a promotional bundling for her "acoustic church tour." It listed dates of that day and today for her being in Auckland (which, so I assumed, would long since have sold out). Spotting this album finally managed the trick of sending me online to find some samples of her music. No thanks to sony and the complete lack of acceptable samples on the official sites (.ram and .asf won't ever touch my computer), I tracked down a couple of mp3s. Yesterday evening I listened to those songs. This morning I went out and bought her first album, "Drive." Late this morning I ripped and listened to said album. (About half her songs are little jewels of perfection, often very catchy as well; the others don't seem to flow very well, but I might yet grow to appreciate them.) This afternoon I went out to order tickets for next month, when Bic would return to Auckland according to some posters I'd spotted. Idly inquiring about the availability of tickets for tonight's show, I learned to my surprise that a few extra had become available. This evening I attended a sold out (~800 people) concert by Bic at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity here in Auckland. (And bought a signed bundle of her other two cd's.) Wow. I mean, she's no Happy, but there's not a rough edge to her voice. It just flows its mellowly perfect way - she complained about this; she wants to be in a rock and roll band and smash things and stuff :) - taking you along for the ride before you can notice. A tiny girl standing on stage, looking at the world with those big eyes, wondering who all these crazy people are out there and what they're doing here. Just doing her own thing, unpresuming, not too certain what to do next... and then yanking some utterly beautiful sounds from ... well, somewhere obviously. The acoustics in the church were great. I didn't know whether to close my eyes to better feel it all surrounding me, or to keep my eyes fixed at Bic lest this miracle disappear. Only three more weeks until she's back in Auckland. And Sarah McLachlan will be here three weeks after that. Life is good. *sighs happily* Sander ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Apr 2004 12:13:01 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Calling all CT ectophiles -- Ashley Maher (Well, it didn't work for Jeff, but maybe it'll work for us ...) Dear good people of ecto, If you're within any sort of reach of New Haven, Connecticut tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon, you *must* come to our place to see Ashley Maher. She is everything I'd imagined she'd be, and more. Accompanied by a stunning classical guitarist from Uruguay named Federico, her voice is even richer and more gorgeous than it is on CD. Plus she's funny as hell. She is quintessentially ecto, and there's no excuse for anyone to blow this off. This may be her one and only East Coast "tour", so don't end up kicking yourself afterwards for missing it! The festivities start at 2pm tomorrow afternoon. Drop me a note to let me know how many seats to reserve for you. :) P.S. If you're in NYC and just can't get out of the city tomorrow afternoon, go see her at CB's Gallery at 8 pm tomorrow night. She needs all the support she can get there! =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Apr 2004 12:37:45 -0700 From: "abaton" Subject: Julia Vorontsova CD Release Party in NYC @ Bowery Poetry Club Julia Vorontsova NYC cd release party Bowery Poetry Club ~ 308 Bowery - New York City Sunday, April 25, 2004 @ 10 pm Abaton Book Company is pleased to announce the release of From St. Petersburg With Love, the debut cd by Julia Vorontsova. This cd release contains 23 original song/poems all sung in Russian and includes a 12 page booklet of English commentary and drawings by the artist. Clink here for more info: http://www.abatonbookcompany.us/JuliaVorontsova.html "The Singing Poets" In a medieval sense, Julia is a "singing poet" and the singing poets of Russian are called bards. They like to stick their heads over the necks of guitars and sing their poetry. The great three singing poets in Russia are Alexander Galitch, Bulat Okudjava and Vladimir Vyssotsky. Julia's mentor, Veronika Dolina is "...considered in Russia as the only singing poet who approaches the talents and the status of these three". Through Dolina, Julia Vorontsova is in direct disciplic lineage to this group of poets. Julia understands the artform, the subject matter and most importantly has the voice and talent to present the genre in her own unique way. She is undoubtedly the most recent link to these bards of the Soviet era. Abaton Book Company is proud to present the debut recording by Julia Vorontsova to an American audience. We hope to see you at the Bowery Poetry Club on April 25th at 10pm. 308 Bowery @ Bleecker Street. Admission is $5.00. You can call 212.614.0505 for more information. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Apr 2004 17:18:19 GMT From: "Emma Wrigley " Subject: Re: Bic Runga in Auckland I too absolutely adore Bic, but I think it'll be a long time before I get to see her live (has she ever played Scotland, does anyone know?).
