I am pretty neutral of individuals names but a few of them have an emotional pull on me of some sort....like Heather Nova, Alice Peacock, Beth Hart, Butterfly Boucher, zeora sage or Lori McKenna...can't explain it but I have bought CDs based on names that appeal to me or for that matter if the cover art interests me. Usually I am not disappointed. On the group side, I am much more likely to not be interested in names like metallic or that convey violence, hatred or an extreme overdose of testosterone because I have a preconceived idea about what groups like that will sound like. I am surprised from time to time but I would never buy any music by those group without get several recommendations. There are groups I bought unknown but because i was drawn to their name like Ten Story Relapse Or Zero7 which I really enjoy,,,charlatan UK I bought unheard because I liked the name This is little name phenomenon tends to effect me positively to be interested and only rarely to be disinterested. Subject: bands names ending with numbers One worth checking out, IMHO, is Phil Manzanera's 801. The ex-Roxy Music-er formed it as a brief sideline in the 70's, and the "801 Live" album from 1976, with Eno guesting on keyboards and vocals, is a wondrous treat, with some of the best guitar playing from Manzanera ever. The repertoire consists of some of his solo material, mixed in with a few Eno pieces, and the result is something very, very special, and one of the best live albums ever. Unfortunately, with a slightly altered line-up, he only did one more studio album ("Listen Now") and then called an end to that particular band. adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 2004 07:45:59 -0400 From: Jeffrey Burka Subject: Vienna @ the Birchmere So the last time Marc and I saw Vienna was at Iota and only about 7 weeks after the first time we saw her. Although I probably would have gone alone, Marc decided to go with, as we both felt it was likely to be our last chance to see her in so tiny a venue around here. It seems we were right -- last night, Vienna opened for Lowen and Navarro at the Birchmere. It's a pity she was the opening act, as the $20 tickets got us about 35 minutes of Vienna, and while Lowen and Navarro were okay, it would have been a much better show if they'd opened for her... Interestingly, L&N introduced Vienna and talked about how great she was and how happy/lucky they were to have her opening. And it's not clear how much of the audience was there to see Vienna (L&N are rather popular around here; this was their 27th time at the Birchmere), but she got a great crowd reaction, got everybody to do the customary singalong on "Soon Love Soon," and...something I don't think I've ever seen for an opening act, she got a standing ovation! It was also great getting to see Vienna with Marika Hughes and Alan Lin; the string section really contributed to the live arrangements, and it was great hearing Alan sing bv on "Homecoming." That said, I found that the one thing the arrangements were missing -- something I never found missing when I saw just Vienna with her keyboard -- were drums! I thought I would really miss the brass/woodwinds from the _Warm Strangers_ songs, but while it would have been nice on "Harbour," it was really the percussion I missed. They are a chill/downbeat type outfit that would fall under the general heading of electronica. Personally I think the term neo-lounge (meant in a positive light, not a cheesy one) best describes music like this. They have a new album out that I haven't heard but their first release, "Simple Things", is very good. np: Peter Holsapple and Chris Stamey- Mavericks ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 2004 08:34:30 EDT From: Riphug@aol.com Subject: Re:band names ending with numbers One of my absolute favorites right now is Zero 7, not to be confused with Zero One, who do some very nice electronica. Zero 7's first album, _Simple Things_, is very cool, sexy, relaxing. The remix album is rather decent too. But I'm currently enjoying their second album, _When It Falls_. I was pleased to see them recommended as great mood music on last week's episode of _Queer Eye for the Straight Guy_. There's also bands starting with numbers...10,000 Maniacs comes to mind Todd Pierce Asheville NC __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Heh...as a drummer myself, I actually spent much of the upbeat numbers from Vienna's tour opener with full band wishing the drummer would go away! He was just too loud, and he overpowered the rest of the music. I'd blame it on the sound mix, but the venue was small enough that I'm not sure he was even amplified all that much. Not that it wasn't a great show regardless...just suggesting that you may not have missed as much as you think. :) Agreed that fuller accompaniment on "Harbor" -- that oboe especially! - -- would have been nice on the tour, though impractical. I thought Marika did a great job of compensating with the harmony vocals, though. They released an EP and later an album, "Fencing Under Fire" on their own label in 2002. This band broke up in 2003 and Patrice Pike is now a solo artist, though it doesn't appear that she has an album out yet. Looks like she plays around Texas a fair amount (from http://www.patricepike.com) Amusingly enough, I had never heard of Patrice or Sister 7 until a month or so ago. The Fencing Under Fire CD with associated press info, but without any cover letter or explanation, showed up in Jeff's mailbox. I've been listening to it recently but haven't really formed an opinion. It reminds me a touch of Lucinda Williams in her more rocking road, but with a somewhat less distinct voice. Still sorting it out. neal ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 2004 19:17:05 -0700 From: "London, Sherry" Subject: Carina, carina Last week I noticed that Carina Round was coming back to LA. and opening for Snow Patrol at the Troubadour....dang...I thought to myself...my life is so good. After 19 months of being out of work and looking for a new career move, I finally landed a great gig back in January with a small software company. I have been swamped with work ever since. I have been keeping up with all of the great conversations here on Ecto during all this time though. Anyway, the main reason I am posting this evening is because I am very excited about the fact that I again found the music of Pollyanna Bush. I do not believe that I have ever heard her name or her music mentioned here before on Ecto. I first saw Pollyanna and her band in 1997 at the now defunct Club KAOS in Fremont, CA. They were opening up for a prog rock band from Mexico called Cast. I went there to see Cast. But it was Pollyanna and her band that blew me away. They made the show for me. Unfortunately, many in the prog crowd did not get or appreciate her music. Pollyanna and her band received a mixed reaction. I bought a cassette of her music that night and nearly wore it out over the next few years. I don't play the cassette anymore for fear of permanently losing it. I will soon be converting it to CDR. I don't want to lose that music. A few years back I did some extensive Internet searches to see what Pollyanna was up to and it seemed that she was no longer doing music. At least, I couldn't find anything on her anywhere on the net. Well today, I accidentally stumbled on the fact that she released a new CD in 2002. Pollyanna is a passionate singer and has a funky, grooving group of musicians supporting her. The description of her music on CD Baby is quite accurate as far as I'm concerned. Here is what is says: "Imagine the instrumental power of Tori Amos; the insightful lyrics and rocking groove of Peter Gabriel; the power-pipes of Jonatha Brooke; and the soaring melodies of an early Joni, then you will have some idea - both, of her influences, and her own unique sound." I really feel like many of you will like her music. Here are a few URLs to check out: http://www.pollyannabush.com/index.htm http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/pollyanna All the best!
