The new Patty Griffin is stunning... I really recommend you all run and get it. I like it a lot better than her last one, which I also did like a lot. I played a cut (Florida) on my radio show tonight and a woman called in asking about it and saying she'd had to sit in her car listening, that is was gorgeous, and promised to buy the CD tomorrow. - -Jess Here's a short review from USA Today: Patty Griffin, Impossible Dream (3.5 stars of 4) Ostensibly a folk singer, Patty Griffin has a mesmerizing voice that shows traces of not only Emmylou Harris but also the Staple Singers and, on the single Love Throws a Line, Sister Rosetta Tharpe. She's a phenomenal songwriter, too, and a better-known singer would be wise to cover When it Don't Come Easy, though it's hard to imagine any who could deliver the lines "If you break down, I'll drive out and find you/If you forget my love, I'll try to remind you" with as much understated conviction as Griffin brings. Even with expectations raised unreasonably high by her previous work, Dream more than fulfills them. - Brian Mansfield Another review which is more intersting but longer, so I won't post it all here, is at http://www.newsday.com/entertainment/music/ny-etledew3764152apr20,0,7639 Griffin's 'Dream,' a real masterpiece Apr 20, 2004 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Apr 2004 00:51:23 -0600 From: Jessica Byers Subject: Re: names I don't know if I've had a problem with names in that sense, but I admit I sometimes shy away from playing artists on the radio if they have names or songs or albums that are too hard to pronounce. Confession time: there are songs by Blink 182, Eve 6, Stroke 9, and...um, no, not Matchbox 20 that I actually like. I know, I know, I'm probably going to hell. Personally, I save my prejudicial scorn for bands named after places. (Alabama, Boston, Asia, Europe, America, Kansas, Chicago, Georgia Satellites, Miami Sound Machine...) And yes, there are exceptions here as well, though not nearly enough to offset the general trend. > I can't think of any times I've had negative reactions to the names of > solo artists, though. Well, except for goofy-sounding pseudonyms. I definitely saw at least one person -- I think it was in an Amazon review -- who mentioned being initially turned off by Vienna Teng because of her (self-chosen) name. That one I really couldn't figure out. Ethan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Apr 2004 02:02:53 -0700 From: Ethan Straffin Subject: Public thanks to Mr. del Tufo Feh. I just suffered a weird and nasty email crash -- Mac OS X is usually my friend but today was not -- and lost, among other things, your full name and email address. Anyway, I received the copy of Tribe's _Here at the Home_, and I'm far beyond grateful. Hearing the original versions of these much-loved songs (along with the two that didn't make it onto _Abort_) is a definite treat. I'm only now listening for the second time, but I'm already blown away by the original version of "Vigil" in particular. (Those keyboards, and David's brilliant work on the drums and cymbals, which for whatever reason wasn't carried over to the remake...wow.) Thanks again. No one piped up, but it was delivered in the mail while I was away. Awesome, awesome, awesome. If anyone has their first EP, then you must buy this one. This is for those who really like harmonies as the three women who make up TWJ show just how wonderful all three voices work together. Most songs are written by the three, but a few are covers - again, well done. I can not recommend this CD enough. So I'm thinking of going through all my OLD cassettes of bootlegs that I have and converting them to CD-R's. I'm pretty much ready to get rid of them, as they are just taking up space in my closet. I haven't listen to them in ages, and I probably would be much more likely to if I had them on CD. I probably won't be doing it anytime soon, but since I'm thinking of it... So here's my questions. CNET recommended a program called GOLDWAVE which looks great, but is only available for PC's. I'm running a MAC. Does anyone know of a good program similar to GOLDWAVE for the MAC? Does anyone have GARAGEBAND and can tell me if might work? My boss has iLIFE and I have borrowing the disk from him, but nothing on the suite looks all the interesting. I'm not familiar with any of the programs Irvin mentioned, so I don't know how they compare. But I use Felt Tip's Sound Studio. It's a pretty straightforward 2-track editor that's very easy to use. Record your tape into your computer using Sound Studio. Increase volume if need be. Drop markers where you see fit. Split by markers and you are done. I've been using it to get my bootleg tapes onto CD. The one oddity is that on the recent versions, normalize seems to wipe everything to zero. It used to be a nice routine that would find the peak and make that the maximum volume allowable. It's shareware with a pretty good trial period, so you might download it and see what you think. http://www.felttip.com neal np: AMP House Concert with Four Shillings Short (actually editing it with Sound Studio right now) At 8:49 PM -0700 4/21/04, irvin lin wrote: >Hello all. > >So I'm thinking of going through all my OLD cassettes of bootlegs that I >have and converting them to CD-R's.
