I have to point out that the two collaborations with Robert Fripp are very ambient and very "frippertronic" to use Fripp"s own description of a particular guitar styling of his. One terrific Eno pop record that hasn't been mentioned is his collaboration with John Cale- "Wrong Way Up'. Here's the scoop on it. >4/23, New York NY, Fez Under Time Cafe, 7pm, 212-533-2680 380 Lafayette Street at Great Jones Doors open at 7:00; Cover is $12. http://www.feznyc.com/ Tracy Grammer's dark, ethereal vocals evoke a purity and resonance that brings radiance to the songs she performs, and her attention to melody and story lines lends a rare sophistication to her vocal and instrumental interpretations. Her adept accompaniment extends to violin, mandolin, guitar - yet it is her vocal prowess and intuition that infuse her work with a numinous quality quality and has established her as a formidable performer in her own right. Tracy Grammer and her late partner Dave Carter were called "one of the fastest-rising acts in folk music." Despite Carter's sudden death in July 2002, Grammer's career as an interpreter and and instrumentalist continues. "Tracy Grammer is coming to save you. Armed with a few of the sassier members of the string family, and a voice as nuanced and strong as you could hope for, Grammer delivers the songs of the late Dave Carter with a supernatural force that funnels straight through your ear to the deep, deep center of your heart. With meticulous rhythm and lyrics as familiar as they are puzzling, these songs have an intellectual and emotional edge that most folk music fails to hone. They tell tales spun from an existential cowboy mindset, rife with the beauty of barren landscapes and an awareness of the yet untravelled miles of the soul. " - Margaret McKenna, The Independent "Tracy Grammer is a brilliant artist and a unique individual in her own right. Her voice is distinctive and beautiful, as is her mastery over the instruments she plays." - Joan Baez ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Apr 2004 13:16:28 -0500 From: forwardtcm@softhome.net Subject: Sarah Harmer I'd like to thank whomever it was who mentioned Sarah on this list...I'd never heard of her before and was initially put-off by her name. Eno: I will second the recommendation about _Wrong Way Up_ by Eno and Cale. In my humble opinion, it is the most perfect pop album ever produced. I first discovered Brian Eno when I started college and started doing college radio. That was the era of _Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy_ and _Another Green World_. They played in Eugene last night. They're much like the most recent incarnation of Throwing Muses from last year (with Bernard Georges returning as bassist and Rob Ahlers on drums), although I think somewhat catchier and crunchier; it's definitely Kristin in hard rock mode instead of folky mode. The show was a bit short, but at least also cheap. Shows are coming up in Olympia, Portland, and Seattle this week. The throwingmusic.com web site has more information on their tour dates and a link to the cdbaby.com page where you can buy the first 50 Foot Wave EP as well as listen to MP3s of the first part of each of the six tracks. They're also selling the EP at shows for a mere $7. Pacific Northwest-area Ectophiles might want to be on the lookout for one of the opening bands, The Ovulators, a reasonably competent all-female rock band. I was reminded a few times of Kristeen Young by some of their shrieky vocals and shock tactics. I'm also looking forward to Susan McKeown's return to Eugene next week. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Apr 2004 15:35:35 -0700 From: Ethan Straffin Subject: Moonlighting finally on DVD? I have to say I'm quite disappointed... ...with the crowd turn-out, that is. I was one of only 7 or so outside fans, not counting cafe employees, stage hands, etc. The club wasn't huge, but it could seat 100 or so. They delayed the start of the performance for at least a half hour, but that didn't help. I was wondering if they were going to cancel the show. However, the club manager gave the go-ahead and the music started. Rachel was wonderful, and I quickly took a front row seat (of course there wasn't much of a rush for chairs..hah). She was accompanied by Stephanie Winters, a lithe, elegant cellist wearing blue jeans that Rachel apparently had customized for her with artistic designs. Of course this was quite in keeping with Rachel's penchant for drawing and sketching. I blonde gentleman provided horn accompaniment with a trumpet. I'm afraid I forget his name, but he was quite good himself. I'm not sure but I think he wasn't part of Rachel's group, but was a local musician picked up for the occasion. Rachel played her red Kurzweil keyboard, which was covered with more of her artwork. All three musicians were terrific; Stephanie's lovely cello especially moved me. They deserved a much bigger audience...well, it's Birmingham's loss. Most of the songs Rachel played were unfamiliar to me. Since I've heard most of her first four CDs, likely they were from Public Record or the new CD she plans to release this August. I'm certain many of them were from the latter, in fact. I had wanted to request Cyanide and Cinnamon, which I think is her best piece, but another fan beat me to the punch when she asked for requests. Her set was disappointingly short, quitting after perhaps 10 or so songs. But since this was a double-bill I suppose it's understandable. I was fortunate that she was slated to play first, since this meant I could leave at the intermission and get home at a decent time (hey, I work for a living! **grin**). I was slightly surprised at how trim Rachel was...she wasn't skinny by any stretch, but, well, I guess I didn't really know what to expect, having never seen her in person. She wore a cute outfit, composed of black jeans, a red Hello Kitty top (with sheer mesh sleeves, one red, the other black), red granny glasses, and dark hair streaked with more red. I loved the red/black scheme she had going, as those are two of my favorite colors. Still, I think she would have been more attractive if she'd kept all of her hair dark and left the glasses in her suitcase. They detracted from and hid her face, and dark hair would have contrasted better with her light skin tone. More, it would have brought more weight to the parts of her lyrics where she mentions her pale skin. But I digress. Rachel has southern tour dates left in North Carolina, plus three more in Georgia. If any of you can make it I heartily encourage you to attend...she's a great artist and deserves all the support we can muster. I bought Painting before I left, after having almost selected Public Record. Lovely cover on that latest release. I think there are band names I'm prone to like (My Friend the Chocolate Cake!) and dislike, but when it comes down to people's names, I think I'm pretty open-minded.
