I can not recall hearing anything like this since Richard Thompson and the late Sandy Denny were in Fairport Convention together. So (for those who know these things), I have to ask, is this song typical of this,or any other, albums by her? For that matter of fact, is the word album still viable; or is it just a relic from the age of vinyl? As for Adam K's Guardian link, I couldn't get it to work. It could just be a web tv thing though. Very limited browser you know. However i would love to learn more as I feel that Eno's first four non ambient releases were some of the most brilliant pop music ever recorded. And "Taking Tiger Mountain (by Strategy)" is definitely desert isle material (not that I could limit myself to ten artists, never mind ten releases). I've also heard Air's most recent release "Talkie Walkie" given the same comparison. So if anyone here really feels they know something that merits that comparison I'd love to know. Oh, and by the way Adam; "Remember those quiet evenings" np: Patti Smith-Gone Again ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Apr 2004 12:31:20 -0400 From: meredith Subject: House Concert Announcement: Ashley Maher Hi, After a break of a couple months, woj and I are presenting our next living room concert: Sunday, April 25 at 2 pm (please note the earlier-than-usual start time) ASHLEY MAHER Live At The House O'Muzak New Haven, CT Suggested donation: $10 We have been fans of Ashley Maher for a decade already, and we are finally going to have the chance to see her perform live. Words cannot express just how exciting this is. Trust me -- anyone who is even a little bit interested in "world music", Afropop and beautiful music in general is not going to want to miss this. Ashley Maher is a fresh voice in the growing field of global music. Following the footsteps of pioneers like Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, and Sting, her work fuses western singer-songwriter sensibilities with the rhythms and textures of West Africa and Latin America. Ashley has regularly recorded and performed in London, Paris, and L.A., sung as a backing vocalist on records by Youssou N'Dour, The Afro-Celt Sound System, and Myriam Mursal, and performed as a dancer for a number of African dance troupes. Ashley's third, independendent CD, "The Blessed Rain," features some of West Africa's finest musicians. Said Nick Coleman of "Time Out", "Her tunes are almost indecently luxurious, the playing exquisite, and the arrangements as full of subtlety as you could wish...hers is a golden world, in which words are garlands, voices are a glow and drums...well, you know what they say about the drums." There are sound samples -- and even some performance video -- at , both of which are quite representative of her music. (Those in the immediate area can also tune in to Wild Woman Radio on WNHU 88.7-FM tomorrow (Sunday) evening between 8-11 pm to hear some tracks -- I'll be sprinkling her music throughout the show, just because I can. :) As always, we will have yummy snacks, and if the weather goes south again probably one last go-round with the hot cider. Please e-mail me at meth@smoe.org or call 203-776-9325 to reserve your seats for this highly anticipated show. And please tell your friends! Hope to see lots of you next Sunday, =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Apr 2004 10:57:10 -0700 From: "Scallion, K.D." Subject: Hayley Westenra Has anybody heard of Hayley Westenra? I was just on Sam Goody's site and clicked on her classical album Pure featured on the front page for the heck of it and noticed she had recorded a version of Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights." She sounds like she has a pretty voice from the sample that I heard. The album is called Pure which fits her voice--her voice is extremely pure soprano. Those who like the Sarah Brightman, Sissel, and those type might like it--the album has a very true to the original cover of Wuthering Heights, as wellas a mixture of classical and pop material.
