My friend gave me a CD with her cover of > "Leaving on a Jet Plane," which is lovely. Yes, I picked up her Colour Moving and Still CD after hearing "Leaving on a Jet Plane" on local radio - actually one of the Canadian stations that make Buffalo area radio bearable - and nearly having to pull my car to the side of the road. It's a wonderfully haunting, ethereal take on that old standard. I'd previously heard "Before You", which is a bit bouncier and poppier, and promised that I'd grab the CD if I heard any other songs off it that were nearly that good. The rest of the CD is stylistically between those two tracks. Chantal's voice is like a cross between Sarah McLachlan and Alanis Morrissette, while the music is typically a more ambient version of Paula Cole. Unfortunately there is only one track, "Far Away", that is remotely as interesting as the above two. The rest, IMO, is bland post-Lilith stuff for which the producer's apparent obsession with polish and studio trickery does no favors. It's pleasant background music, but not much more, and I typically turn to Nina Gordon first if I want to hear this sort of thing. If not for those two wonderful songs, I'd probably offer someone this CD for a very reasonable price. But then again, I'm thinking I'd love to hear "Before You" right about now... I should mention that "Leaving on a Jet Plane" is only available on a limited edition of the Colour Moving and Still CD. This edition has a bonus disc with that cut and two other songs, including a pleasant but unnecessary cover of the Beatles' "In My Life". I suppose you could also pick up the soundtrack to the movie Armageddon, which also has "Leaving on a Jet Plane", but unless you are the rare Ectophile who also enjoys Aerosmith and Bon Jovi, I'd stick with Colour Moving and Still. I think Chantal probably wound up on the soundtrack only because she was dating Raine Maida (sp?) of Our Lady Peace, who are also featured. Lauren __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Nothing Earth changing but a nice mix of styles. I enjoyed "Under these rocks..." I really liked "Colour Moving and Still" a lot, and think her latest album, "What If It All Means Something," is outstanding. I find Chantal's work grows on me after several listens... and it's often weeks after I get the album that I really find that I love it. I find her voice rather mesmerizing, but it's really her use of melody that really gets me. She really knows how to spin a tune, in my opinion. The title track of her latest album is aural bliss to me... and "Before You," from "Colour Moving and Still" just thrills me in its combiantion of love song and sarcastic comment. Michael C. n.p. I picked up Colour Moving and Still and was pretty unimpressed. Haven't heard her first one but I really like What if it All Really Means Something. And you can pick it up really cheap. Great album.
