Vienna calling By Christopher Muther, Globe Staff, 4/7/2004 Holy Shirley MacLaine! Paula Cole's career may have passed her by years ago (coinciding with the demise of "Dawson's Creek," if memory serves), but her sweet purr is happily reincarnated in the kindred spirit of Vienna Teng. This lovely young lily pens the kind of songs that appeal to that sensitive Tori Amos-Kashi cereal crowd. Blithe, peppery numbers rest comfortably alongside the requisite emotional retching. Teng -- sadly no relation to orange Tang, but just as tasty -- entertains the hirsute masses tonight at Club Passim with two shows. Catch her at 7 or 10. Tickets are $12. 1) i don't think i've ever thought of vienna and paula cole in the same sentence (actually, i'm trying to remember the last time i thought of paula cole at all and it's not coming to me). 2) what's "kashi cereal"? 3) how can you be blithe and peppery at the same time? and what exactly does he mean by "peppery" in the first place? 4) hirsute? mike curry cut off his long hair years ago! ;) we won't be at passim but we will be at the acoustic cafe in bridgeport (now with new overpasses for your driving pleasure!) on thursday. see y'all there! woj ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Apr 2004 08:23:17 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: ouch! However, should I *ever* wax preciously obscure enough to use the phrase "Vienna calling" as a headline in any way, shape or form not directly related to Falco, could you all do me a favor and euthanize me immediately? Mr. Muther hits his intended target about as well as Jerri of Survivor All-Stars. The man is an idiot -- not because he doesn't like Vienna, but because he expresses his dislike so incompetently. We should move on, but perhaps we should mock him a bit first. I'll start. > 1) i don't think i've ever thought of vienna and paula cole in the same > sentence (actually, i'm trying to remember the last time i thought of > paula cole at all and it's not coming to me). Actually, I'll confess to mentioning Paula in my Amazon review of WS. For better or worse, you've gotta admit that there's something Paula-esque about "Hope on Fire." Not to knock Paula or anything. "Throwing Stones" still kicks ass. In fact, I hereby dedicate it to Mr. Muther: "So call me a bitch in heat / And I'll call you a Muther fucker!" (That's for the jaw-droppingly stupid Tang comment, dork. Two can fit in that elementary-school playground.) > 2) what's "kashi cereal"? Curious, isn't it, that neither of us knows? I'm thinking the man doth protest too much. > 3) how can you be blithe and peppery at the same time? and what exactly > does he mean by "peppery" in the first place? Could be anything from "resembling pepper, esp. in pungency or irritating effect" to "sharp, stinging, pungent; highly spiced" to "unpleasant, objectionable" to "strong, powerful." Meanwhile, "blithe" could mean anything from "exhibiting kindly feeling to others; kind, friendly, clement, gentle" to "jocund, merry, sprightly, gay, mirthful" to "yielding milk." Apart from ruling out that last definition (presumably), who knows what he was trying to get at? Most likely, he simply likes dredging up slightly offbeat adjectives of three syllables or fewer and hoping that his readers don't have subscriptions to the OED online. (No such luck, Chris. I helped *develop* the OED online.) Either that, or he considers kindness and mirth to be unpleasant and objectionable, which I suppose would explain a lot. > 4) hirsute? mike curry cut off his long hair years ago! ;) Yes, this is definitely the adjective that puts the big red indelible "IDIOT" stamp on the Christopher Muther file. He's going to need to do some serious community service to work that one off. Think of Vienna Teng and you'll get the idea of what Paula Cole is like (grin). IMO they are quite similar, though Paula doesn't use piano as her main instrument. And of course Paula is caucasian... > 2) what's "kashi cereal"? I still think it's a silly comparison, though. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Apr 2004 21:54:40 -0400 From: Philip David Morgan Subject: Looking right thru them (was : Ouch!) Greetings, Ectofolk: There have been times when someone suggested that I become a music critic - perhaps that person thought my musical taste would be well-suited to a newspaper job or something similar. But this was in the 1990's, when my personal connections to some of our local musicians (especially Janice Buckner) had intensified to the point when writing about the same musicians I was befriending would have been a conflict of interest. More than a decade later, I discovered another good reason for resisting the temptation to turn critic: it would have resulted in the most shallow and flippant scratchings imaginable. I would have been no better - or different - - than the _Boston Globe_ writer who thought his single-paragraph write-up of Vienna Teng was clever... when, in fact, it reads just like my attempts to play critic would have been. Shallow, flippant, and irrelevant. Or, in another word, worthless tripe. And dragging in the Kashi posse was infantile and pointless. Yes, there is a little danger in being over-passionate about a musician or some other "artiste" you admire (Shunji Iwai's 2001 film _All About Lily Chou-Chou_ frames that danger in his story of the life of a troubled rural Japanese adolescent). But to throw various ill-chosen metaphors into some sort of "blender" from which a newspaper "piece" is spawned is an example of culture journalism at its worst. To paraphrase Clifford Irving as interviewed for Orson Wells' film _F for Fake_ (1975), you might say that I've lost (for better) all faith in critical expertise. And I've never regretted not going into print journalism. Not when you're in the Wired. Philip David 2004.04.07 n.p.
