I heard the song Volcano on WBOS New Music Sampler. Its a good song, I think, but it was Lisa Hannigan's vocals that really got me and that I think make the music somewhat Ecto-ish. I just love what she does on that song. She needs to record a solo album. But I went out and got the Damien Rice album, and though its a bit radio-friendly pop for my usual taste, I really like it. I've listened to it three times so far tonight. I love the cello and other string stuff. And Lisa Hannigan's very prominent vocals. :) A few interesting moments of opera and chant-like stuff, too. I'm sure this has been discussed here before and I missed it, but here it is again for anyone who hasn't heard it yet. The CD is called O. http://www.damienrice.com And this seems to me to be an accurate review: http://www.popmatters.com/music/reviews/r/ricedamien-o.shtml - -Jess (Also enjoying the new Vienna Teng) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Apr 2004 00:31:10 -0600 From: Jessica Byers Subject: an exercise in surreal opacity... This is my favorite quote today. I thought I'd share it here.... - -Jess "Writing about music without writing about how it affects your life is, to me, an exercise in surreal opacity, like writing about sex or child-rearing without talking about love, or writing about food without eating." - -Glenn McDonald, Furia.com (http://www.furia.com/twas/twas0300.html) PS If anyone is not familiar with the reviews this guy writes, you should go check him out. Very interesting stuff. He reviewed Warm Strangers a few weeks ago and does lots of Ecto artists. Probably another thing everybody already knows about. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Apr 2004 03:00:05 -0400 (EDT) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friends... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ******************** Brion McIntosh (no Email address) ******************** ***************** Marcel Kshensky (mundopax@ingress.com) ****************** *********************** Bill Mazur (wpm@value.net) ************************ *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Brion McIntosh Sun April 06 1958 Aries Marcel Kshensky Thu April 06 1950 Aries Bill Mazur Mon April 06 1953 Aries Sun/Cancer Rising David Dixon Tue April 07 1970 Aries Heidi Heller Mon April 08 1974 Aries Jill Hughes Sat April 09 1955 Aries Klaus Kluge Sun April 10 1960 Unicorn Steve VanDevender Sun April 10 1966 Racer Art Liestman Fri April 10 1953 Repeat Stephen Golden Sat April 10 1971 Jokey Michael Bowman Wed April 11 1962 Aries Wolfgang Ullwer Fri April 11 1969 Widder Janet Kirsch Thu April 11 1974 Aries Jerry Tue April 13 1971 Aries Stuart Myerburg Mon April 14 1969 Aries T-Bone Wed April 15 1992 happy cat Jeff Hanson Sat April 16 1966 Aries Michael Klouda Mon April 17 1967 Aries Harry Foster Sat April 21 1956 NiceGuy Kjetil Torgrim Homme Thu April 23 1970 Taurus Jeff Burka Thu April 24 1969 GoFlyAKite Christine Waite Tue April 25 1972 Taurus Matt Adams Thu April 26 1962 Taurus Brad Hutchinson Tue April 28 1964 What sign? Sometimes they even have the sound check online, so maybe tune in earlier. The stream quality isn't too good, but fine enough to enjoy listening. And tonight it's Richard Shindell also at 7 pm ... Oh my god, it's all so far away ... dierk :-) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Apr 2004 09:57:21 -0400 From: DanStark <2004.carnivore99@verizon.net> Subject: Wonderfalls Compiled from a few sources... Another good TV show has bitten the dust: Fox has canceled Wonderfalls after just four episodes. The series, set in Niagara Falls, N.Y., but shot on the Canadian side of the border as well as in Toronto, was cancelled because of low ratings. It had its final showing last week. Quebec actor Caroline Dhavernas starred as a young woman who hears voices coming from animal figurines and other objects, directing her to intervene in the lives of other people. The series, which was one of the best-reviewed new shows of the season, ranked 103rd for the week of March 22-28 with an audience of 3.3 million. By comparison, an airing of top-rated American Idol that week attracted 27 million viewers. The series was simulcast in Canada on Global TV. Wonderfalls is one of several new scripted shows to quickly flop this season, including CBS's Century City, while reality shows including NBC's The Apprentice are proving hot. The good news? Thirteen episodes of "Wonderfalls" have been completed, and Wonderfalls (and ex-Buffy) producer Tim Minear says he and creators will try to find a home for the remaining unaired shows, either on DVD or at another network. "The thirteen taken as a whole tell a story and go to a place, so a run of this 'limited' series would not be unsatisfying elsewhere," Minear said. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Apr 2004 07:14:38 -0700 (PDT) From: Alberto Carrasco Subject: Re: Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan FYI... Last Fall when Vienna Teng performed in Chicago, she mentioned being addicted to "O" while driving around the country and she performed a wonderful solo piano version of "Cannonball". I also saw Damien Rice here last Summer and though not typical of music I like, he was very entertaining and seemingly sincere, though, unfortunately, Lisa Hannigan was not on that leg of the tour. I'd recommend him live, though he's gotten so popular here, he's playing huge venues now... - --- Jessica Byers wrote: Hiya, I just wanted to chime in and say I finanlly discoverd Damien Rice. The first four or so songs didn't make a huge impression on me, but I really liked the second half. I'm not sure if that's because it took the a while to get good, or if it just took me a while to get into the album. Anyway, on first listen, my favorite songs were "Flight 609," "Walnut," "Snow," "Soul Redeemer" and the title track. Of course, three of those were on her live album that came out a couple years ago, and I think I might have heard a couple of them live, too, so maybe I like them best because they're the songs I'm most familiar with. It's nice to hear a new Penelope Houston album, since it's been like five years since her last full-length studio release. This one is more in line with her earlier folk-rock albums than with the straight-up rocking of _Tongue_, which is fine with me, because, while I love _Tongue_, Penelope plays some great folk-rock. Anyone else hear it yet? josh. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Apr 2004 20:31:57 -0400 (EDT) From: Sue Trowbridge Subject: Jill Tracy / CD Baby Just wanted to mention that Jill Tracy's CD DIABOLICAL STREAK is back in print on my label :) Some of you may remember Jill from EctoFest West a few years ago! Jill also had a song on the Songs Inspired By Literature CD, which got her coverage on NPR and many other media outlets. Her music is sophisticated cabaret-noir -- definitely a unique, alluring sound. You can download a full-length MP3 at http://www.125records.com/shop.html, and it can be purchased either there or at CD Baby. CD Baby currently lists it as "back in stock soon," and in fact there are almost 80 people on their waiting list! I just shipped them a big box of CDs today, so they should have 'em ready to go before the week is out. From a label/business standpoint, I will add that the CD has a FABULOUS booklet that cost us a lot of $$$ ;) It was worth it, though -- it is truly stunning, with lots of very cool photos shot with an early-20th-century camera. If you like a tough power-pop sound with female vocals, you can also download a couple MP3s from the new Shalini CD, METAL CORNER, on the same page linked above. Very different from Jill Tracy, but I love 'em both! - --Sue ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Apr 2004 18:03:46 -0700 From: Damon Subject: Re: Jill Tracy / CD Baby On 06 Apr, Sue Trowbridge wrote: > Just wanted to mention that Jill Tracy's CD DIABOLICAL STREAK is back in [...] > it can be purchased either there or at CD Baby.
