I spent most of last summer listening to it - the opening track still gives me chills. Oooo, I like Rachael's voice. After that it's hard to say - Smashing the Serene is more folksy (it even has a bordeline sea-shanty on it)and less electronic than Illusion's Carnival and Public Record, her latest. I'd go for Smashing 2nd so you can see both sides of Rachael. Then it's either Public Record (which is the most slick of the bunch) or Morbid Romantic (which I was pleasantly surprised by, it deserves better than being considered only for 'completists'). Finally there is Painting of a Painting, which for some reason never struck me as strongly as the others. In summary though you can't go wrong with Illusion's Carnival, Smashing the Serene or Public Record, as a first purchase. Sage's music is so much better than what passes for music on radio these days. Todd Pierce Asheville NC (I realized the other day, when complaining about how I can't stand today's 'popular' music - all rap/dance/rhythm it seems to me, no attention to melody or lyrics - that I sound just like my parents did when I was listening in the 1980s to college alternative stations, and artists such as Kate Bush. "Why can't you listen to _normal_ music?" Like Elton John?" my mom would say. Sheesh, I've become my parents.) __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Unlike others who have already weighed in, I think each of her albums has gotten stronger as she's gone along. My favorite Rachael Sage album is whichever is the newest one. But as far as which one to start with, you certainly can't go wrong with starting with _Smashing The Serene_ like so many of us did, and then get the others in chronological order. It's a wonderful album from start to finish. I agree that _Morbid Romantic_ is pretty much just for completists, though it does have a couple really standout songs on it, in particular "The Spirit We". Funnily enough, after attending a recent house concert here someone who had noticed I'm a _Farscape_ fan sent me a music video that a fellow 'Scaper had made of various Chrichton-and-Aeryn clips set to that song. Apparently it's even been shown at _Farscape_ fan conventions, and is a very popular video because of the song as much as the video content. (It's not a bad video, as fan vids go, and the choice of music beats the pants off the usual pop-radio or classic-rock crap the _Xena_ and _Buffy_ fans like to use for their vids. :) =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Apr 2004 10:07:49 -0800 From: "London, Sherry" Subject: Nesrin Sen and Thea Anna Marie: I am going to get this CD bases on your recommendation because I am a huge Heather Nova fan but it is a bit pricy at $17.00.....especially since I just got so many great CDs for $5.00 each from CD Baby. I'll let you know how it hits me after I listen to it for a while...thanks, Oh, I second Adam, go see Thea.....we had hundreds at Santa Barbara but she was playing as part of series of shows and most people bought the series, it was much like a HUGE house concert....I was guess the majority of the audience didn't know of her but she sold lots and lots of CDs afterwards to a gushing crowd. sherry Date: Fri, 2 Apr 2004 01:45:00 -0800 (PST) From: anna maria "stjdrnell" Subject: nesrin sen hi.. fans of heather nova might check out nesrin sen. her album type nesrin sen is like heather but jazzier. the glass-shattering soprano is very heather. site:nesrininfo.com cdbaby has the album. anna maria This e-mail/fax message, including any attachments, is for the sole use of the intended recipient(s) and may contain confidential and privileged information. I downloaded the three tracks she makes available online ("Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie" and "en Gallop!" from _Walnut Whales_ and "Bridges and Balloons" from _Yarn and Glue_), and the wordplay alone is going to make them repeaters. I actually enjoy "outsider" stuff (from Japan and North America), and I can say these are easy to warm up to. Certainly Irwin Chusid should prick up his ears and link her. But now, if you'll excuse me, I have to drop Ms. Newsom a note. Her website doesn't say where I can buy her discs - and I want to. Um, 50 pounds a ticket > before the service fee???? sounds like the situation here in australia. concert ticket prices these past couple of years have gone through the roof ... the promoters always claim it is because the australian dollar is so weak against the u.s. dollar, but i don't know. ani difranco toured here in february, for example, and a ticket for that cost me about $60 australian. not "cheap," granted, but cheap compared to the prices for most other acts coming here! i would have liked to see fleetwood mac, but the most expensive tickets for their shows were over $400 australian and the cheapest (right up the very, very back of an enormous entertainment centre) were almost $90 australian. same with david bowie tickets. comparatively, when bob dylan last toured australia with ani difranco and the waifs (wonderful line up) in early 2003 the ticket wasn't even $80 - and it was a great seat. granted, i don't think bob dylan drags antique furniture half way around the globe with him to furnish his own hotel suite the way fleetwood mac evidently do, but still ... i more than empathise on the expensive ticket scale. it's expensive for everybody, i think, i'm sure i'm not just whinging because i'm a student. ha. i put myself in the poorhouse today, too -- spent $110 on a ticket for sarah mclachlan's upcoming tour here. the cheapest seats were around the $90 mark when all was said and done, so i figured why not go out in glory with a front row ticket if it's only $20 more? i'm ecstatic that she's coming here, though. it has been almost a decade since she was here doing support for the chieftans. there are not many people for whom i'd pay that sort of money (i couldn't afford to!) but sarah is there alongside tori amos. of course, come november it will officially *be* a decade since tori toured australia, so i've pretty much given up hope of that ever happening again ;) heidi. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 03 Apr 2004 17:49:22 -0500 From: Jason Gordon Subject: pictures of thea from joe's pub nyc I just uploaded pictures from Thea's concert last week at Joe's Pub (unfortunately 1.
