Subject: Andy "XTC" Partridge in today's Guardian/britcom/obligatory Thea mention A heads up for any XTC fans out there -- Andy Partridge gives an interview in the Guardian's "Home Entertainment" section, in which he talks about his cd collection/musical influences/faves. Of supreme ecto interest, in that he gives a glorious thumbs up to Judee Sill. http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts/homeentertainment/story/0,12830,1183635,00.ht ml should take you there. Meanwhile, I heartily second "Smack the Pony", which I always enjoyed. It could be patchy, but the performers were so endearing and just naturally funny that it always made me laugh. I even liked the pop video spoofs at the end, which almost everyone else I know hated. While on the subject, has anybody mentioned Alan Partridge (no relation)? One of tv's most glorious, monstrous creations. I didn't get into the 2nd season of "I Am Alan Partridge", but the others are works of twisted, cringeworthy genius. And finally, I hope there was a sizeable ecto turnout for Thea Gilmore's NYC date -- her gig in Pittsburgh attracted all of 24 people! adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Apr 2004 01:43:05 -0800 (PST) From: anna maria "stjärnell" Subject: black books Hi.. i'm a big fan of black books too. tamsin grieg is marvellous. oh did someone mention smack the pony? great show that too. have laughed my head off at the music parodies..the one of geri from sice girls was a scream. anna maria np-saint eve-elixir nr- leonard cohen-energy of slaves __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Er, anything but _Morbid Romantic_? I suspect this puts me in the minority, but of all her albums (and I do have and listen to them all), my absolute favorite, and the one I play most often and can't get out of my head, is still _Smashing the Serene_, her second album. It's folkier and less electronic than the later albums, and is generally just fabulous. To me, after that album, each successive album has gone downhill a little bit for me, with the possible exception of _Public Record_, which I liked a lot -- if only I could figure out where the heck I left my CD of it! I tried to pull it out to listen to a week or two ago and couldn't find it. Mind you, when I say that they've gone downhill, that doesn't mean that they're bad -- every time Rachael releases something, I'm eager to buy it, because I know I'll like it -- I just haven't obsessed over the other albums the way I still do over _Smashing the Serene_...and it's been, what, around 5 years since that came out? jeff n.p. _Transatlanticism_, Death Cab for Cutie ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Apr 2004 07:16:06 -0800 (PST) From: Ellen Rawson Subject: Melissa Etheridge and ticket prices Last night, I was thumbing through Time Out London (I live in the sticks two hours out but subscribe anyway :) and noticed that Gillian Welch and Melissa Etheridge both are coming to London at the end of July - -- last week of the month. Wonderful! I want to book tickets. I go to Gillian Welch's homepage, click on the links, and there I am. 17.50 pounds a ticket, okay. Next, it's Melissa Etheridge. Um, 50 pounds a ticket before the service fee???? I know she puts on a good show; I've seen her live in Denver and London. And I paid 40 pounds for the London gig last time. I wasn't so sure about it, but I went ahead since she wasn't playing at a huge venue - -- it was a West End theatre. But now she's at the Hammersmith Apollo, a much larger place. And 50 pounds, plus charges? And her fan club get rows B-J. 50 pounds is about US $88. Is that what concerts with people like Melissa cost there nowadays? (The Vienna gig was $12. :) Ellen ===== "Literature stops in 1100. My immediate reaction was GET SMASHING THE SERENE. I really do think it's still her best album. I love the others a teeny bit less each, but just a teeny bit, except for Public Record, which I like quite a bit less, though I still think it's a fine record, and maybe I just haven't given it enough time yet. StS was such immediate love though, and it's held up over the years. I would skip Morbid Romantic unless you become a huge fan, in which case you'll want to get everything she's done. Hope that helps. JoAnn >From: burka@jeffrey.net >To: ecto@smoe.org >Subject: Re: Rachel Sage >Date: Fri, 02 Apr 2004 10:31:22 -0500 (EST) > >danged webmail! I tried to write something original for here, but couldn't do it any better. The sentiments are exactly the same) If you haven't seen Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, please consider. I've seen it 3 times now and it's not only going to be in my Top 5 of the year, it might even stay at #1, where it is now (followed closely by Dogville). Not only that, it could enter my All-Time Favorites. It's a really, really, really good movie. It's best to go in without knowing too much about it, so I'll just give the basic plot. Anything beyond that should be marked with stern SPOILER warnings. Joel Barish (Jim Carrey), a shy, introverted man, finds out that his flaky, impulsive girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet) has had her memories of him erased after a nasty fight. He's upset, and decides to have the procedure done too, out of spite. Halfway through, he realizes that along with all the bad memories of Clementine, he's going to lose all the good ones too, and he changes his mind. That's enough (maybe too much), but I promise that there's so much more to it than that. It's a very thought-provoking movie and it has so much heart. It's gotten deeper into my soul each time I see it. It has some humorous moments, and I guess it's classified as a comedy, but I think of it as a drama with funny moments here and there. The screenplay was written by Charlie Kaufman, who wrote Adaptation and Being John Malkovich (both directed by Spike Jonze), and directed by Michel Gondry, who directed Kaufman's script of Human Nature. I don't think that one was a total success, but they were getting to know each other and working toward a groove, which they have absolutely found. I think this movie is darn near perfect. It gets better with each viewing as scenes, images and dialogue make even more sense than they did the time before. If you think you don't like Jim Carrey, this movie should change your mind (if his excellent performance in The Truman Show didn't already). If you only really like the crazy, zany Carrey, this might not be your cup of tea, but think about giving it a try anyway. Kate Winslet is at her best, and most beautiful, and will steal your heart. The supporting cast is perfect too: Tom Wilkinson, Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo and Elijah Wood (who is far away from Frodo here as a creepy loser). The music, the cinematography, the in-camera visual effects, Clem's hair colors (the names of the colors correspond to her mood)...it's all good. I don't know what else to say about it without discussing various plot points, which would be spoilers. Please, avoid spoilers until you can see this. If I had to put this on par with another movie, I'd set it on the shelf with Paul Thomas Anderson's Punch-Drunk Love, for several reasons, among them that they're both very off-beat romantic love stories, written and directed by talented and creative auteurs, and star comics who are mainly known for, or got their start in, low-brow comedy, and the director has gotten something out of them that will touch your heart. Chris and I adore both movies. We're sappy romantics at heart, but Eternal Sunshine is not sappy (neither is PDL). Please see this movie while it's still in the theater, if at all possible. It not only needs the support, it demands to be seen at least once in a theater, on a big screen, where you'll be fully enveloped into the experience. Enjoy! It has a 92% on the Tomatometer, if that means anything to you (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/EternalSunshineoftheSpotlessMind-1130889/reviews.php). Vickie's recommendations. I saw it last weekend and thought it was brilliant. Thought provoking, clever, visually stunning. Definitely not to be missed. One thing I would add though.... I personally would want even less info then Vickie provided. I hate knowing much about movies when I go in, and not even knowing the basic premise of a movie like this can (in my eyes) increase your appreciation of it dramatically. At least on first viewing. Nothing like watching something new and different unfold in front of you. My girlfriend and I quibble about this all the time. While I'm sitting in the theater looking at my lap, saying that I want my first view of golum or the ents or whatever to be in the context of when they first appear.
