I'm in awe of Six Feet Under. I've only seen the first season, because I came late to the party, and that's all that's out on DVD so far, and I refuse to watch them out of order. I figure I can deal with some delayed gratification for drama that's this weird, funny, and brilliant. The CD is great and it's our first time putting a show on at a local bar that we are trying to turn into a listening room. The room is perfect for it, so it's just a matter of convincing the audience that's what they came for. I think it should be easy though. The place usually runs local blues bands 4 nights a week with a cheap cover, but we've thrown on a $15 ticket and are running it like a concert. It's a great month for us too, as we are hosting Sloan Wainwright for our April house concert. I've been trying to get Sloan out here for years and can't wait to see her in the house concert setting. I also hooked them up with a show in Santa Fe with one of my favorite locals - Laurianne Fiorentino (http://www.lauriannef.com) opening. And May brings us the Kennedys. Woohoo! (And if all goes well, September will bring us Rachel Sage, with at least Stephanie Winters on cello, but perhaps Dean Sharp on drums.) It's shaping up to be an excellent year for music in New Mexico! I also wanted to point out that once Eliza leaves here, she's off for another visit to Holland, Ireland and England. I know there are fans on that side of the pond, so check out her web site for dates near you. neal ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Mar 2004 13:43:19 -0500 From: fingerpuppets Subject: thea gilmore on wfuv just noticed that thea gilmore will be on wfuv's city folk live program tomorrow, wednesday, march 31st at 12:30 pm eastern time. wfuv is at 90.7 fm for those in and around new york city and streaming on the web at for everyone else -- and those in manhattan whose signal is blocked by tall buildings. ;) thea's also at joe's pub tomorrow night. we'll be there -- hope some of the rest of y'all come down too! woj n.p. nothing! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Mar 2004 16:04:32 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: Eliza Gilkyson Hi, Neal posted: >I'm getting really geared up for our CD release party with Eliza Gilkyson >this weekend. Hi, Great news for those longtime ectophiles who, like us, have been fans of Ashley Maher for more years than we care to count: she's *finally* coming to the Northeast to play some shows!!! Better yet, she's coming to our living room ! ASHLEY MAHER Sunday, April 25 at 2 pm (note the earlier-than-usual start time) Live At The House O'Muzak New Haven, CT Suggested donation: $10 Who is Ashley Maher? From her bio (since my brain isn't functional enough today to come up with something on my own :): "Ashley Maher is a fresh voice in the growing field of global music. Following the footsteps of pioneers like Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, and Sting, her work fuses western singer-songwriter sensibilities with the rhythms and textures of West Africa and Latin America. "Born to British parents in Canada, and moving to Los Angeles when she was five, Ashley's gift as a singer was recognized early on. She grew up singing jazz, classical, choral, and medieval music and even studied opera in Italy for a year, before faIling irrevocably in love with African music. Stumbling upon a class by Ghanaian master drummer, C.K. Ladzekpo, at DC Berkeley, Ashley knew she had found her calling. She studied drumming with him for two years, before graduating and heading straight to London in search of African musicians. "London was alive with global music. Ashley performed with her band for two years before collaborating with premier traditional dance and drumming group, Adzido, to record her first set of demos. The tape soon came to the attention of a number of record companies and she signed a contract with Virgin U.K. "Virgin released two records for Ashley. The first, named "hi", was met with critical acclaim and hailed as a promising debut. The second, "Pomegranate", featured a superb selection of Paris-based African musicians and again was met with positive press. Said Nick Coleman of "Time Out", "Her tunes are almost indecently luxurious, the playing exquisite, and the arrangements as full of subtlety as you could wish...hers is a golden world, in which words are garlands, voices are a glow and drums...well, you know what they say about the drums." "Since then, Ashley has continued to develop as a solo artist. She has regularly recorded and performed in London, Paris, and L.A., sang as a backing vocalist on records by Youssou N'Dour, The Afro-Celt Soundsystem, and Myriam Mursal, and performed as a dancer for a number of African dance troupes. Ashley's third, independendent CD, "The Blessed Rain," features some of West Africa's finest musicians. "Building a bridge between cultures," she observes, "is fruitful when both sides love and understand one another's musical language. 'The Blessed Rain' is a more intimate record than my first two. Less epic, more earthy and simple." " There are sound samples at , both of which are quite representative of her music. She has a wonderful voice and I know just from dealing with her to set this show up that she's an even more wonderful person, so this is a must-not-miss for all in the area. (She is going to be accompanied by a guitar player on this little tour as well.) After her show here she is going to head down to NYC to play at CB's Gallery that same night at 8 pm. I encourage the NYC ectophiles to do a doubleheader as well. :) ecto is really our only source of bodies to fill our living room for this, and it'd be really great if we could give her a good turnout ... if for no other reason than to help defray her travel costs. Please e-mail me to reserve your seats for this highly anticipated show. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Mar 2004 13:29:36 -0800 From: Nadyne Mielke Subject: Re: Neverwhere At 07:07 AM 3/30/2004, breinheimer@webtv.net wrote: >I am unfamiliar with Neverwhere but am intrigued by the Dr. Who >references. Would anyone compare the show specifically to Tom Baker era >Dr. Who? Only as far as the production values are concerned. :) I think that's where the comparisons are coming from. (To this day, I can't look at certain types of trash cans without being reminded of Daleks.) _Neverwhere_ was filmed on a shoestring budget even by BBC standards, and Neil Gaiman has talked a lot about how the end result wasn't nearly what he had envisioned in his head. Still, though, it is well worth seeing for the story if nothing else. And the book is wonderful, as one can expect from Neil. It fleshes out the story particularly well. >Between Baker's tongue in cheek (a hippie's idea of Sherlock Holmes?) >performance and the superior writing (remember Douglas Adams was on >board during this time) I have always considered these to be among my >favorite tv show episodes of all time. I know that amongst hard-core Whovians this is blasphemy, but the Tom Baker era is to me the be-all and end-all of Dr. Who. I'm sure this is because the very first episodes I ever saw were when our local PBS station was running the Tom Baker series, so Tom Baker *is* The Doctor to me. Everything else just pales in comparison (sort of like how the reworked vocal of "Wuthering Heights" will always be the definitive one for me simply because it's the first one I heard, to bring this even a little bit back to ectophilia :). (I just had a flash back to high school, when one of my best friends showed up after winter break completely drowning in the scarf her sister had knitted her for Christmas using the official pattern PBS offered as a pledge drive premium during airings of Dr. Who... If I could afford it, there is a lot of BBC et al on DVD that I would love to buy. Not all my favorites over the years are the best known stuff; there is also buried treasure like _The Good Neighbors_, a sendup of voluntary simplicity years before that movement became a going concern; _Tenko_, a sort of proto-_China Beach_ about women in a WWII POW camp; _Agony_, a comedy about an advice columnist whose life seemingly could have used some good advice; _Waiting for God_, a wry look at life in a retirement community, fun for old people of all ages; _As Time Goes By_, a look at love among the middle-aged; _The Vicar of Dibley_, arguably the funniest minister on TV; _Danger UXB_, with Anthony Andrews as the leader of a wartime bomb squad (probably explaining hsi devotion to his teddy bear in his next series); not to mention the original _Coupling_ before the Yanks mucked it up (not the first time that's happened), _Rumpole_, and--of course--_Doctor Who_.
