I really want to like Wonderfalls, out of respect for those involved if nothing else. At the same time, it's *so* self-consciously quirky and offbeat that I just can't get into it. At some point, if you're going to go that route, you still need to bring the genuine funny along with the quirkiness and offbeatitude -- and I'm just not seeing it doing that. > And it apparently got moved out of the deathslot - preview of next > week's > said "next Thursday on it's new night". I wish it well, on general principle, though I'll still eat my shirt if Fox allows it to last as many as a half-dozen more episodes. Bounce the show around? IIRC, Fox didn't actually shift timeslots on "Firefly." They merely aired the episodes out of order, to the extent that anyone who might have wanted to appreciate the plot/character arcs was left hopelessly confused, and thinking that the series was far less coherent than it actually was. (Seeing the episodes on DVD, in their proper order, was a delightful revelation for me.) BTW, Universal has given the thumbs-up to a "Firefly" movie, tentatively entitled _Serenity_, which apparently will feature all nine members of the original cast. Apart from the snatches I've heard -- the sugary, string-soaked ickiness of it all, and the honey-smeared, glossy videos that go with it -- there is the fact that, in reality, her songs have been written, arranged and produced by Mike Batt, the man more famous for the Wombles (brit kids tv show) and Art Garfunkel's "Bright Eyes". I suspect she's little more than a product, and it just happens to be good fortune that she's utterly gorgeous. But, I'm just being cynical. adam k. - ----------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Mar 2004 09:55:56 -0500 From: Gary Davis Subject: Re: TV shows on DVD Well, in this house the DVD's that get the most play are Jay Jay the Jet Plane and Thomas the Tank Engine (over and over and over and over - AAAAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHH, I can't get these stupid tunes out of my head!!!!) LOL!! But for adult fare, for Christmas I got my wife the complete set of The Avengers - the Mrs. Peel years. Turns out she was a major fan. And what red blooded male can deny having a thing for Mrs. Peel, so did I really get it for my wife? LOL! And for her birthday this past week I got her The Vicar of Dibley, a rather charming British Comedy with Dawn French. For myself I've got the pilot of the Twin Peaks and am contemplating getting the series. If you are hardcore fan you should see about getting the SPECIAL EDITION, that has an extra TWO disks worth of bonus stuff. Wow.. wasn't expecting to ever see that show on DVD (but then I wasn't expecting to find Svengali either). Freaks and Geeks was great, if only they'd given it a chance and not pre-empted it every other week for some sports junk. Watching that show was like going back in time, the characters were all like people I knew, they captured the time period well (unlike That 70's Show, which bears little resemblance to anything I remember about the 70's). And of course there was something very appealing about Linda Cardellini in an old army jacket.. Now if they'd just put Queen of Swords on DVD... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Mar 2004 13:36:17 EST From: RavFlight@aol.com Subject: Re: Here comes... Some phenomenal ensemble work from Sir Nigel Hawthorne, Paul Eddington and Derek Fowlds not to mention brilliant/sarcastic/funny script writing. Also, the complete "Black Adder" series if your taste run more towards the slap-sticky Monty Python style of humor. Then of course there is "Ab Fab", one of the classic Brit coms. This was written by Dawn French and her partner Jennifer Saunders and also has some great ensemble work, not to mention some side splitting moments with Joanna Lumely (ex Avenger). Finally, for something completly silly, check out "The Young Ones". A series about...well, pretty much...nothing, but I guess that's the point.
