HEY hey! one of my favorite topics TV SHOWS ON DVD! Just a HEADS UP. If you are ordering the REGION 1 version (North America) of NORTHERN EXPOSURE you should head over to AMAZON.ca (the CANADIAN store) and order it quick. I'm pretty sure they mispriced the sucker, because they have it listed for $25 CAN, while the US amazon (AMAZON.com) has it listed for $41 US. At $25 CAN it comes out do about $19 US. Heh. Not sure how long it will be up there until AMAZON.ca catches it. But worth a shot. Personally I think $41 US it's rather steep price for only eight episodes (the first season was a short season). I'll probably wait to find it used somewhere. In the meanwhile, just as an FYI, check out http://www.tvshowsondvd.com which is a website that is dedicated to, well TV shows on DVD. Guess that was self explanatory wasn't it? Anyway you can "vote" on there for shows that you want on DVD, and they have news on what shows are coming out, what shows are rumored to come out, and why shows AREN'T being released when they should be. As of right now the first season of GILMORE GIRLS is actually scheduled to be released on MAY 4th. NORTHERN EXPOSURE is due out MAY 25th along with BUFFY season six. The first season of DEAD LIKE ME is also scheduled to come out JUNE 15th, along with the first season of MONK. Also of interest is SIX FEET UNDER season two, due JUNE 8th along with the first season of QUANTUM LEAP. Oh, and APRIL 6th sees the long awaited release of FREAKS AND GEEKS. If you are hardcore fan you should see about getting the SPECIAL EDITION, that has an extra TWO disks worth of bonus stuff. You can buy check out the specs at http://www.freaksandgeeks.com/dvd/ The one that I personally am waiting for, doesn't have a date announced yet. But it's due out this year and the lead character already has gone into the studio to do commentary. WONDER WOMAN. Whoo hoo! Anyway as you can tell I am an AVID fan of TV shows on DVD. With all the hullabaloo about trying to getting a SIXTH season for ANGEL on the WB I personally think FOX (the company that produces the show) and JOSS WHEDON should just bypass broadcasting the show and produce a season direct to DVD. ANGEL already is a proven hit as a box set. So releasing episodes that have never aired would be a surefire moneymaker, even if they were to charge twice the price for the box set (or charge the same amount, but have half the episodes). I mean what WHEDON fanatic wouldn't shell out $50 for 12 unaired episodes of something from the BUFFYverse? And there are a heck of a lot of WHEDON fanatics out there. They could probably syndicate the show after the box set has been released to further supplement revenue. Talk about a win/win situation for everyone. *sigh* If only I were a TV exec. If only. On a slightly different side note, METH mentioned music on the shows. Music is a HUGE issue in releasing TV shows on DVD, that is, licensing the music for release. And it's the main problem for getting any show released onto DVD. Some shows replace the music because it would just be too cost prohibitive to license the music. ROSWELL/FELICITY did that - much to the fans TOTAL dismay. It was either replace the music, or not release the show. It's the reason that SEASON THREE of DUE SOUTH hasn't been released yet (it just postponed AGAIN...). Anyway, just be forewarned. Don't be running out to buy a show thinking you are going to be seeing the EXACT same show with the EXACT same music. You might not.... Anyway it's also the reason that certain shows will probably NEVER be released on DVD. I think the classic example was WKRP IN CINCINNATI. Since the setting of the show was a radio station, there were hundreds of little bits of songs that were interspersed in the show. Every single clip of a song has to be licensed and gone through the proper channels. And since there is no standard for the cost of licensing a song for a DVD release, some labels are trying to charge OUTRAGEOUS amounts of money for the use of their songs. Another reason to hate the major labels I guess. I'm still waiting for them to release MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE season two, but it's in limbo because of music licensing issues, which probably means it'll never be released. *sigh* Anyway. On another slightly different side note. Those of you who are fans of ANGEL or DEAD LIKE ME, should definitely check out the show WONDERFALLS if you haven't already. The people behind both those shows are doing WONDERFALLS and it's pretty damn amusing. I've never seen DEAD LIKE ME (I don't have cable, I guess I spend that money on DVD box sets instead heh) but I hear WONDERFALLS has the same quirky humor that DEAD LIKE ME has. It also has the dubious death slot that FIREFLY had, FRIDAY NIGHT on FOX. Anyway check it out if you haven't already. It's definitely quirky and amusing. The pilot episode was hilarious. The second show wasn't as good, but I still think it has much potential. Oh yeah and it has great music. ANDY PARTRIDGE from XTC did the theme song. And a song by FROU FROU featured quite prominently on the pilot episode. And they have been using songs by a singer named JEM (not to be confused with the HOLOGRAMS - though yes, the first two seasons of JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS will be released this coming TUESDAY). JEM (the singer, not the cartoon) has been featured quite prominently on the LA station KCRW as well. She's pretty good. She's probably in the same vein as FROU FROU or DIDO for those who like that sort of thing. Think radio friendly TRIP POP. Her current claim to fame is that she recorded with GUY SIGWORTH (MADONNA, BJORK, and of course, FROU FROU) and cowrote a song with him. He took that song and then it ended up on MADONNA's AMERICAN LIFE CD, and was her third single "NOTHING FAILS." it's also my favorite song on the album. Well okay, it's the only song that I like on the album really, so when I found out that JEM wrote, I had to track her down. And she's not bad. Haven't heard her album yet (don't think it's been released yet) but what I've sampled sounds pretty tasty. More info can be found on her website http://www.jem-music.net/ (she's signed to ATO, DAVE MATTHEWS label and current label of PATTY GRIFFIN). Okay I've rambled on enough. I can't believe you actually this read far. Well, tonight's episode was better than last week's, but still not as outstanding as the first episode - that first episode was enough to sell me on it for at least a season, though. Think Field of Dreams meets, maybe, a 10-year-older My So Called Life? Hem was the Ecto Artist of Note in tonight's episode. And it apparently got moved out of the deathslot - preview of next week's said "next Thursday on it's new night". Guess they'll play roulette with it until nobody can figure out when it's on and ratings justify cancellation.
