'The Disconnection' Carina Round Carina Round sets out to summon primal dramas and elemental passions. "I wait all my life just for the rush, the passing of fire into my blood," she sings on her second album, "The Disconnection" (Interscope), which has just been released in the United States. Ms. Round is a British songwriter who released her debut album, "The First Blood Mystery," in Britain in 2001, followed by "The Disconnection" last summer; she is performing at Arlene Grocery on March 23 and Joe's Pub on March 24. In her songs there is no boundary between inner turbulence and the outside world; lust and obsession transfigure the landscape as the music swells around her or suddenly drops away to leave her utterly exposed. Like P. J. Harvey, she builds songs around bluntly strummed guitar chords and implacable drumbeats, and she pushes her voice to extremes; she can be sultry, desolate, abstracted or adamant. On her first album Ms. Round used small, mostly acoustic backup groups, while "The Disconnection" plugs in and exploits the studio. The new album's executive producer, Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, assists with arrangements that only seem stark; as Ms. Round moves between composure and abandon, guitars, strings and horns loom behind her, then dissolve like apparitions. The music has expanded to match Ms. Round's volatility, and there is still plenty of room for her outsize ambitions. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Mar 2004 11:56:45 -0800 From: "London, Sherry" Subject: carina round, u.s. release I got Carina's latest CD directly from the UK a while back because it wasn't released here at that time. It is released now, but what surprises me so much is how radically different the cover art is. While the UK cover is very artistic and stylized , the US cover is a nice, sweet picture of Carina. Personally, I prefer the UK cover but I wonder why the change....they visually send two totally different messages. Two weeks until she is here.... sherry This e-mail/fax message, including any attachments, is for the sole use of the intended recipient(s) and may contain confidential and privileged information.
