Hey, dude, you're friends with me, so what does that make YOU?! A mean, mean person. Kyler is a friend from Berklee who does folk/pop in the vein of Paula Cole and Sarah McLachlan. Really strong voice. I hope she wins over some new fans at her shows with Vienna. And Sherry, for venues, I just check the websites of places that I frequent (www.hotelcafe.com , www.largo-la.com , www.foldsilverlake.com , www.knittingfactory.com , www.genghiscohen.com) or the websites of artists that I'm looking forward to seeing to see if they are in the area. www.pollstar.com sometimes is good for info, but they often don't carry tourdates for smaller independent artists. I'm lucky that I live in the Valley just above Hollywood, whereas you are a bit of a trek away in Fullerton. Vienna Teng-Warm Strangers So far, the first half of the disc is kinda hit or miss with me, but the back half just blows me away, especially the last four songs. I've always thought she had a pleasant voice, a delicate voice; but she really demonstrates a power and passion that I hadn't heard before in those final tracks. *whew* Jonatha Brooke-Back in the Circus Nice, but not grabbing me so far. 10 Cent Wings was stellar IMO, Steady Pull had some killer moments amidst standard Jonatha fare. Circus doesn't have the songwriting or the sound strengths of her previous work. I finally heard Jem on the radio the other day (103.1 FM, a new "independent" radio station that's owned by Clear Channel, but actually plays decent music, mostly alternative rock from the 80's and 90's) and found the song to be intriguing. My friend Nick says they've been playing her a lot on that station. Now i'm curious to see how her album sounds. The only thing it lacks they recon is the surprise factor from their second album "Visitor". I haven't heard the album as of now, but I thought I'd mention it. Everything released by Kristin Asbjxrnsen is worth listening to IMHO. After close to 15hours on the air last week I'm looking forward to a lazy 3 hours this week :) But I did get to cram in quite a few great songs along the way ... like by My Scarlet Life, Tori Amos, Boss Hog, Lone Justice, Suzanne Vega, Unni Wilhelmsen, Tracy Chapman and more. - -- Yngve ****************************************** * One alien has come, unalien to one ***** ****************************************** ***** Blessed be!!! ********************** ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Mar 2004 07:54:21 -0700 From: neal copperman Subject: music listings At 5:04 AM -0500 3/9/04, Paul2k@aol.com wrote: >And Sherry, for venues, I just check the websites of places that I frequent >(www.hotelcafe.com , www.largo-la.com , www.foldsilverlake.com , >www.knittingfactory.com , www.genghiscohen.com) or the websites of artists >that I'm looking >forward to seeing to see if they are in the area. www.pollstar.com sometimes >is good for info, but they often don't carry tourdates for smaller >independent artists. You guys should at musi-cal to your list. It can be a little slow to work sometimes, but it carries a lot of independent artists and is used by a lot of house concert people. Anyone can post their shows to it with no fee, unlike pollstar. http://www.musi-cal.com now shuffling over: Two Rivers - BEn Murray and Siobhan Quinn Ase - King Sunny Ade and his African Beats Lighthouse (single) - The Waifs Susan Mckeown & The Chanting House (with Flook) at the South Broadway Cultural Center (1/04) Tori Amos - Lyric Opera House, Baltimore (9/30/96) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 09 Mar 2004 17:50:54 -0800 From: Ed Cole Subject: Looking for an artist. Hi folks, Listening to a folk music show on the radio today I heard an interesting voice. The DJ said that it was a new album by "Ora Bell". At least this would be the phonetic spelling. A search at Amazon doesn't give a hit with this spelling. Does anyone know who this woman might be? Thanks. In January, we had a house concert with a couple of singer-songwriters from Texas (Steven Pile & Foscoe Jones). They brought a friend named Brian Keane along with them. Brian was the surprise hit of the night, particularly with his "most unpretentious Odyssey song ever". He wanted to capture the spirit of the story in all it's action packed glory, and boy did he ever. My girlfriend is a school teacher and she thought it would be great to provide that song to an English teacher in her school. Never one to put ONLY ONE song on a CD, I immediately decided I should make a CD of Odyssey songs. If they turn out to be preteincious, why, that would be fine, since I'll end it with something that will completely take the steam out of them. Here's what I've got so far: a half dozen Wendy Rule songs to winnow down, Calypso - Suzanne Vega Penelope - Sandra Lockwood I have 3 fine Icarus songs and I can't decide if I'll tack them on or not. Anybody have any others? neal ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 09 Mar 2004 23:07:30 -0500 From: "JoAnn Whetsell" Subject: jem & other new releases Paul Kim wrote: I finally heard Jem on the radio the other day (103.1 FM, a new "independent" radio station that's owned by Clear Channel, but actually plays decent music, mostly alternative rock from the 80's and 90's) and found the song to be intriguing. I liked it right off, but it took me a little while to really love it. Try listening to her interview/performance archived at KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic. http://www.kcrw.org/cgi-bin/db/kcrw.pl?show_code=mb&air_date=11/20/03&tmplt_type=show If you like that, you'll like the ep. Her first album, "Finally Woken" is being released on March 23. I love both Jonatha and Vienna's new albums and will have to write proper reviews of each soon. Meanwhile, 4 big thumbs up! That sounds like a great double bill. :) I have seen Kyler perform (Genghis Cohen, Los Angeles and Twigg's, San Diego) and can heartily recommend her. And I'll second Meredith's comments.
